The State of <strong>the</strong> Scotian <strong>Shelf</strong> Report, of which<br />
this document is a part, is a syn<strong>the</strong>sis of pressures<br />
on <strong>the</strong> environment, biophysical and socio-economic<br />
status and trends, and responses to identified<br />
issues. It is a liv<strong>in</strong>g document that consists of<br />
several parts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g this context document and<br />
a series of sector reports and <strong>the</strong>me papers. This<br />
document, The Scotian <strong>Shelf</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Context</strong>, provides<br />
an <strong>in</strong>troduction to <strong>the</strong> natural and socio-economic<br />
environment of <strong>the</strong> Scotian <strong>Shelf</strong>. The aim is to<br />
provide <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> a form that is easily accessible<br />
and readable, and familiarizes <strong>the</strong> reader<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. It is complementary to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me<br />
papers, which provide a more <strong>in</strong>-depth look at<br />
important issues on <strong>the</strong> Scotian <strong>Shelf</strong> (Table 1).<br />
Theme papers will be developed <strong>in</strong>crementally<br />
and will be updated regularly, as appropriate.<br />
Theme papers will be focused on <strong>the</strong> priority areas<br />
of biodiversity, productivity and habitat.<br />
