ALSAGER is a tOmlship, and in 1895 was formed into<br />

a parish from the parish of Barthomley, and IS on the<br />

borders of Staffordshire, with stations on the Crewe and<br />

Audley branches of the North ~ta~ordshire ,raih~ay,. 5<br />

miles south from Sandibach, and IS ill the Crewe dIVISIon<br />

of the county, petty sessional division of Middlewich and<br />

Sandbach (Sandbach section), hundTed of Nantwich,union<br />

and coun,ty court district of Congleton, rural deanery of<br />

Congleton, archdeaconry of :Macclesfield and diocese of<br />

Chester. Under the provisions of the "Local Government<br />

Act, 1894" (56 and 57 Viet. c. 73), the town .is<br />

governed by a district council. of 9 .members, forn;ted III<br />

March, 1894, and is well supphed wIth water and lIghted<br />

with gas from Kidsgrove. tMany fine residences have been<br />

built here by the business men of the pottery distr~ct.<br />

The parish church of St. Mary Magdalene, er~cted du~mg<br />

the period 1-8g6-1902, at a cost of £6,900, IS an edIfice<br />

of Alton stone in the Decorated style, from designs by<br />

Messrs. Paley, Austin and Paley, architects, of Lancaster,<br />

and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, or,gan<br />

chamber, nOTth and &outh porches, choir and clergy<br />

vestI'ies and a We6tern tower, with tu,rret and octagonal<br />

broach spire: there are sittings for 450 persons. The<br />

livinrr is a viJcarage, net yearly value £100, in the g-ift<br />

of th~ Bishop of .chester, and held since 1901 by the Rev.<br />

Herbert Joseph Dawson M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge.<br />

Christ Church, a chapel of ease, built in 1789 by tbe<br />

Misses Alsager, is an edifice of stone in the Palladian<br />

style, with an eastern apse -and a western tower containing<br />

a clock and 6 bells: the windows of the apse are<br />

stained, and there are 424 sittings. The register, of<br />

baptisms and burials only, dates from the year 1789.<br />

'The living is a perpetual curacy, net yeaa-Iy value £225,<br />

including 54 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of<br />

1ihe Bishop of Chester, and held since 1886 by the Rev.<br />

"Daniel Shaw M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, Assis­<br />

Misses Msager are lords of the manor. The Misses<br />

Marsh-Caldwell, of Linley Wood, are landowners. The<br />

soil is sandy' the subsoil is sand and clay. The chief<br />

crops are potatoes, oats and whe&t. The a~ea i~ 2,24 r<br />

and also as a Sunday school, and will hold about 500 persons.<br />
