Because there are so
because it is possible to be
The most effective way
Studies have shown that
the average period of communicability
extends from
the 24 hours before the
onset of symptoms through
the five days, after the
symptoms have begun. It is
important to note that a
cold is - most . contagious
when, its symptoms are at
their worst.
Adults in the U.S. average
about two to four colds
per year; in children, the
average number is six to
eight colds per year. Males
have slightly more colds
man females up to the age
of adolescence; but, after
that, the. incidence is
slightly higher in females,
most likely because of their
greater exposure to young
children.
Since there is no cure or
vaccine for the many
viruses that cause the common
cold, treatment can
only alleviate the symptoms.
• '-•'••
Decongestants, such. as
pseudoephedrine or phenylpropanolamine,
are the
. most effective treatment for
" nasal congestion. Cough
suppressants containing
dextramethorphan are
effective in controlling
coughs. Antihistamines
decrease sneezing and nasal
discharge, but they often
cause drowsiness.
Some studies have shown
that vitamin C has a mildly
beneficial effect on colds,
both as a preventative and
as a therapy, but most
research has not been able
to establish such a connection.
• Another common folkremedy,
chicken soup, has
recently gained some scientific
support as a treatment
for the symptoms: Sipping
the hot liquid and inhaling
"the steam increases the pro-.
duction qf mucus, thereby
helping the body rid itself
of the virus more quickly.
However, since the same
. was also found to be true of
hot water, any hot liquid
will probably Melp alleviate
some symptoms.
