Well, for all the Ickabod's, HermeUa's and Rover's out there — wie have good news: It's a Name the Playground Contest! It's been almost six months since the aging s^te on the comer of 34th and 'West* was transformed (almost overnight), by a work-, force of volunteers into a huge multilevel wooden structure c6mplete with swings, a maze, batmobile and other wonderous creations that could only come from.the minds of children. But the difference between this session of Sunday finger painting at the Oceait City Arts. Center and. millions- of others is that adults are the ones having die fun. The class is open to any-grpwn-up who wants to experience, a new way of releasing stress and unlocking the inner child. Finger painting teacher Elinor: Mattern adds that it is a good class "for artists and for people Who were artists. (mm but forgot." ' Mattern .-didn't start out teaching. finger painting to adults. She is a first grade teacher-'and has had years of experience watching art flow, freely from elementary school students. "Children are pretty free creatively," she observes "Adults are not." Like many adults, Mattern greatly enjoyed her own artistic ability, and at the same time struggled with self-doubt. She overcame this by exhibiting her art work in shows Where she won* awards and received recognition.
