X. Current <strong>Eurasian</strong> <strong>Watermilfoil</strong> Management Ef<strong>for</strong>ts <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Idaho</strong> - 2007<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g summaries provide a breakdown of FY 2007 <strong>Eurasian</strong> watermilfoil<br />

projects funded through the ISDA program:<br />

A. <strong>Statewide</strong><br />

1. Milfoil Task Force<br />

Under the authorities and responsibilities established <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Idaho</strong> Invasive<br />

Species Council (IISC), the Governor directed the IISC to undertake a survey and<br />

review of <strong>Eurasian</strong> watermilfoil <strong>in</strong> the state. The IISC first assessed the scope of<br />

the problem by county, <strong>for</strong> both risk and actual <strong>in</strong>festation, and developed a map<br />

of these areas. The Milfoil Task Force (MTF) was <strong>for</strong>med as a sub-committee of<br />

the IISC to conduct this work.<br />

The Milfoil Task Force was created with specific goals:<br />

1. Identify the extent of <strong>Eurasian</strong> watermilfoil <strong>in</strong> <strong>Idaho</strong>.<br />

2. Research & identify additional means of control and determ<strong>in</strong>e efficacy of<br />

available controls.<br />

3. Assist and support the <strong>Idaho</strong> Weed Awareness Campaign <strong>in</strong> rais<strong>in</strong>g public<br />

awareness of the problems associated with <strong>Eurasian</strong> watermilfoil.<br />

The Task Force has been conduct<strong>in</strong>g surveys of <strong>Idaho</strong> water bodies s<strong>in</strong>ce 2000.<br />

The Milfoil Task Force <strong>in</strong>spected water bodies throughout <strong>Idaho</strong> and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed a<br />

distribution database. The project <strong>in</strong>cludes reprioritization of water bodies where<br />

<strong>Eurasian</strong> watermilfoil has not been found and funds to work on bottom barrier<br />

efficacy.<br />

2007<br />

Total project cost: $35,271<br />

ISDA Funds: $28,371<br />

Match: $6,900<br />

B. North<br />

1. Bonner County, Sandpo<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>Idaho</strong><br />

Bonner County treats Lake Pend Oreille us<strong>in</strong>g Sonar and Renovate herbicides<br />

and bottom barriers. Education and outreach components <strong>in</strong>clude signs at boat<br />

launches, public notifications, and radio advertisements. A <strong>Eurasian</strong> watermilfoil<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation office was set up <strong>in</strong> the town of Sandpo<strong>in</strong>t. The <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation office<br />

tracked <strong>in</strong>quires and feedback from the public (see Appendix 4).<br />
