INTERIOR DESIGN
by Stephanie Clemons, ©2014 Suggested Grade Levels 10–C
Interior Design captures student interest in a profession that is never static
or predictable because its focus is people. The text emphasizes that the field
of interior design is filled with creative excitement and innovative beauty.
Beginning with why the profession is valuable, the text then walks students
through the historical roots of the profession, business practices, career
specializations, and educational requirements.
This teaching package helps students examine and apply fundamental
skills of the design process and key supporting factors—including the
elements and principles of design; color and light; historical influences
(including interior/furniture styles and exterior architectural styles); and the
human impact of design (sustainability, universal design, aging-in-place,
anthropometrics, proxemics, and ergonomics).
In addition, students will put knowledge into practice as they learn the
“whys” and “hows” of: selecting interior materials, furnishings, and accessories;
visual communications including how to create drawings, renderings, and
models; commercial interior design applications; residential interior design
applications; applying design skills to an interior design project; and a focus
on career skills.
