Hawes Highlights May 28, 2013
Message from the Principal
I hope that all of you had a wonderful three day weekend! For us, here at Hawes, this is time of year is a
little bit crazy – we have a lot of things still planned and on target for this year (some fun and much still
focused on instruction!!) and we are planning next year. As we sprint toward the finish line for this year,
we do have a lot planned! Please see the list of coming attractions. But, also know that school is still in
session and our students still have things to learn, tasks and projects to complete and still will be held
accountable for reaching for their full potential. Please understand that school is not over – even if we all
feel ready and eager for summer to start! Book reports, homework, and projects and others instructional
assignments are still a given and will continue to be assigned. Please encourage your child to stay
focused on learning and doing his or her best as we move toward that last day of school.
As we look to next year, we are planning our calendar with many fun events and as I look at the draft of
it, I am already overwhelmed by how full it is! We will be implementing JiJi math, a web-based math
program that students will be able to access at school and at home. To learn more about JiJi math, please
Google: Mind Research Institute. JiJi math will help our students build their spatial and temporal math
skills and will be more aligned to common core standards. IXL will continue next year – at least through
January when our license expires. Additionally, more of our teachers will be receiving training in CGI
(Cognitive Guided Instruction) for math, including our upper grade teachers. We are excited about this as
CGI is very much aligned to common core ideas as well as the smarter balance assessment tool. More is
on the horizon and will be shared with you! It is exciting to think about the things in store for our
students at Hawes!
For now, I thank you for your support this year, for all who attended the spring sing assemblies last week
as well as those parents who joined in with the 4 th grade square dancing. It was great to see so many
parents here to support the learning and activities of our students. Thank you!
Kudos and Thanks
Thank you to all who attended CPK dinner last Thursday night or those who have taken the flyer
to CPK so that our PTA benefits! We still have a few more days last in May. Please take a flyer
and have a night out to support the Hawes PTA!
To Jamie Richley and Kevin Prijatel for planning ahead now for an exciting Sports Day event!
For those of you who have participated in this event, you know that is it a very fun and well
organized day of sports for the students! Hats off to both of them for stepping forward and being
willing to organize this day this year as well!
Shima supports Hawes:

It is not too late to head to Shim and then submit your receipt! Thank you to all who have
submitted your receipts from your dining experience at Shima! We appreciate your support in
the easy fundraiser that benefits the school directly!
Sports Day Volunteers needed!!
Our annual Sports Day event is fast approaching and is scheduled for June 10. However, we are
in dire need of volunteers for the day. If you have the time and would like to volunteer during
your child’s grade level rotation, (or even some other part of the day), please contact Jamie
Richley at slaterspaw@att.net or call/text her at 949-836-3628. Please understand that we can
only have as many station rotations as we have volunteers, which means the more help we have,
