MAINTENANCE/VEHICLE MECHANIC<br />
CLASS SPECIFICATION<br />
DEFINITION:<br />
Under general supervision, performs journey level skilled work in various<br />
building/mechanical trades assisting with repair, construction and upkeep of District<br />
buildings and equipment and performs skilled mechanical repairs and service work on<br />
District vehicles and other mechanical equipment. These duties and other related work will<br />
be assigned based on District needs. This position is directly responsible to the Supervisor<br />
of <strong>Maintenance</strong>.<br />
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:<br />
Performs semi-skilled maintenance or assists in skilled maintenance, installation,<br />
construction and/or repair to buildings, furnishings and equipment in all areas of the<br />
construction and mechanical trades including, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical,<br />
painting, carpeting, fencing and concrete. E<br />
Makes repairs and adjustments to systems, heating units, filters, buildings, mechanical<br />
equipment, and playground equipment. E<br />
Performs work from blueprints, shop sketches, and/or as directed. E<br />
Assists in preventative maintenance and repair programs related to various trades and<br />
District mechanical equipment. E<br />
Checks, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects on gasoline, natural gas, and dieselpowered<br />
school buses, trucks, automobiles, and other mechanical equipment. E<br />
Operates diagnostic equipment and makes appropriate adjustments and/or repairs to<br />
vehicles and equipment. E<br />
Performs major and minor inspection and repairs including, but not limited to, engines,<br />
ignition systems and carburetors, vehicle electrical systems, hydraulic and air brake<br />
systems, and vehicle bodies. E<br />
Requisitions, stocks, and maintains inventory of equipment and repair parts and maintains<br />
records and paperwork as needed. E<br />
Prepares and maintains a variety of required records and reports. E
Responds to emergency road calls.<br />
Performs arc and gas welding. E<br />
Drives a variety of vehicles to perform and complete assigned duties. E<br />
Performs related duties as assigned.<br />
Participates in district in-services, workshops, and/or seminars, as directed.<br />
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE:<br />
Knowledge of:<br />
• Principles of internal combustion engines, operation of diagnostic equipment, and<br />
operation of auxiliary equipment on motor vehicles.<br />
• Methods, tools, equipment, and procedures used in the service, overhaul,<br />
maintenance, and repair of motor equipment and of fuel, ignition, electrical, cooling,<br />
and braking systems.<br />
• Provisions of the California Motor <strong>Vehicle</strong> Codes applicable to the operation of<br />
vehicles in the transportation of students.<br />
• Design, construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of systems and<br />
equipment.<br />
• Building codes, laws, OSHA standards, and practices related to repair and<br />
maintenance work.<br />
• Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.<br />
• Basic English usage, writing, mathematics, and record keeping.<br />
• Basic First Aid.<br />
Ability to:<br />
• Perform skilled repair and overhaul work on heavy and light gasoline, natural gas,<br />
and diesel powered equipment.<br />
• Diagnose mechanical defects and perform necessary repairs to mechanical<br />
equipment.<br />
• Use standard mechanical diagrams and technical automotive repair manuals.<br />
• Read test instruments, meters, and gauges.<br />
• Demonstrate journey-level skills in building/mechanical work.<br />
• Work from sketches, work orders, blueprints, and/or verbal direction.<br />
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.<br />
• Maintain and utilize mechanical tools and equipment assigned in clean working<br />
order.<br />
• Operate a vehicle, observing legal and defensive driving practices.<br />
• Maintain current knowledge and application of new methods and equipment.<br />
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those
contacted in the course of work.<br />
• Maintain a high standard of workmanship, work independently, and schedule time<br />
efficiently.<br />
Training and Experience:<br />
Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required<br />
knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill<br />
would be:<br />
Education and Experience:<br />
Any combination equivalent to the completion of high school graduation; good general<br />
background and work history; four (4) years of responsible journey-level experience in<br />
general mechanical automotive repair work. Additional experience as a journey-level<br />
trades-person preferred. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted.<br />
Other Requirements:<br />
• Completion of fingerprinting is required prior to or not later than the first day of<br />
work. Red Cross First Aid certificate, including CPR training, is desirable.<br />
Licenses: Possession of a valid California Motor <strong>Vehicle</strong> Operator's license and a valid Class<br />
II license having accumulated less than two points.<br />
Condition of Employment: Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.<br />
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:<br />
This position class performs work which involves lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects<br />
which weigh fifty (60) pounds up to one hundred (100) pounds, with assistance.<br />
Incumbents in this class stand or walk a major portion of the time including walking over<br />
rough or uneven surfaces. The position requires mobility to climb, kneel, stoop, crouch,<br />
reach and bend; mobility of arms to reach and extend overhead; dexterity of hands to grasp<br />
and manipulate controls, tools and small objects; and is subject to heavy physical labor.<br />
This position requires accurate perceiving of sound; near and far vision; depth perception<br />
and the providing of oral information.<br />

Working Conditions: Environmental conditions will be indoors and outdoors, sometimes<br />
in inclement weather. Caution must be taken in use of electrical equipment; pushing,<br />
pulling, and/or lifting of heavy objects and equipment. Work space may be cramped or<br />
restrictive. Incumbents are required to work with machinery having moving parts and
equipment that can be hazardous as are traffic hazards in operating a vehicle.<br />
Noise levels will be moderate to loud in the operation of equipment. Incumbents may be<br />
required to work with harsh or toxic substances and be exposed to fumes and vapors.<br />
They may be required to wear protective apparel including goggles, face protectors,<br />
aprons, shoes, and oxygen breathing apparatus.<br />
