Carlo Francisco Y.
Manatad is a son every parent would
be proud of. He’s got accomplishments
under his belt that can leave anyone
green with envy. First stop, his degree.
He’s a Bachelor of Arts in Films and
Visual Arts graduate from the College
of Mass Communication of the
University of the Philippines in Diliman
(UP-CMC), aside from a scholar of the
Asian Film Academy. Considering that
he only graduated in 2011, he’s been
reaping one award after another for his
various works in film.
Carlo, the only son of Northern
Samar Provincial Manager Ruben
Manatad, has been joining film festivals
here and abroad. Last February 11 – 17,
his short film “Oasis” starring Sid
Lucero was shown in the prestigious
Berlin International Film Festival. Carlo
was one of 350 filmmakers from 99
countries invited to this festival.
In 2010, he was selected as a
fellow in the Asian Film Academy 2010
in Pusan, South Korea from September
30 to October 17. Interestingly, only 24
students from 16 Asian countries were
selected and Carlo was the youngest in
the said batch.
His film thesis Hungkag, a
short digital film with him as the
director, producer, writer, sound
designer, editor, and colorist was one of
ten nominees for Best Short Film in the
34 th Gawad Urian Award. Although his
film was not chosen during the
awarding ceremonies, having been
nominated for the prestigious award
among hundreds of short films in the
country is an honor in itself.
Hungkag was actually awarded
by the UP Film Institute for Best Thesis
for Narrative in 2010. This film was
screened, nominated and awarded in
various film festivals including, Ani
Shorts: The City in Indie Cinema,
Cinemalaya 2010; Southeast Asian
Cinemas Conference, Ho Chi Minh,
Vietnam; International College Peace
Film Festival, Overseas Student Non-
Competition Section, Seoul, South
Korea on October 27, 2010; and Best
Cinematography, Ateneo Video Open
2011.
The same film, “Hungkag” was
exhibited as a non-competition film in
the Overseas Student category under
Asian Premiere of the International
College Peace Film Festival in
Chuncheon, Korea on October 28, 2010
and Oct. 29, 2010.
This 2011 UP-CMC Natatanging
Magaaral awardee is also active in film
editing. In fact in Dagim, a narrative
feature length film directed by Joaquin
Pedro Valdes, Carlo, along with other
editors, was adjudged Best Editing
for Cinema One Originals in November
2010.
His list of achievements
doesn’t stop there. His narrative film,
Ihadya Mo Ako Sa Masama, with him
as director, producer, writer,
cinematographer, editor, and colorist
was adjudged Best Picture and Best
Cinematography at the Twenty Quatro
24 Hour Guerilla Filmmaking Contest,
DLSU-College of St. Benilde. This film
also made it as finalist to the SM
Bigshot 2010, Manila.
At the moment, this Berlinate
Talent Campus-educated film genius
teaches film-related course at Dela
Salle University, College of St. Benilde
while busy conceptualizing another
masterpiece. Now that’s one talented
son of a provincial manager the entire
NFA community is truly proud of. (MA.
Mr. Tominaman M. Usop, security guard III based in Central
Office has topped a recent NFA Security Refresher Course held at the
The Board of Trustees of the Valiant Security Training Center
composed of Training Director and President Vicky G. Ballesteros, General
cited Usop’s outstanding leadership skills during the 17-day security retraining
Usop was awarded a Certificate of Recognition during the
graduation rites where he delivered a speech for being the class president.
“I hope and pray that we will put to good use what we have learned from
this training for the benefit of our agency. We should prioritize what we can
do for our agency and not what our agency can do for us,” he said.
Usop expressed gratitude to the NFA and the Training Center for the
opportunity given them to update their knowledge and skills specifically on
the revisions or changes in the implementing rules and regulations of
