March 31, 2011 was the official ribbon cutting ceremony for
the Tom and Billie Long Patient Care Tower and also the day
that J. Kendall Anderson retired after more than 36 years at
John Muir Health.
During Ken’s tenure as President of John Muir Medical
Center (Walnut Creek), the Trauma Center was designated
as the only Level II Center for Contra Costa County, The
Phase III building in Walnut Creek opened, the Neonatal
Intensive Care Nursery was designated as the first Level III
NICU in the county, and the merger between Mt. Diablo
Medical Center and John Muir Medical Center was finalized
in 1997. In 2003, the ground-breaking for the Brentwood
property occurred which now serves the growing East
County population. With The Hofmann Family Patient Care
Tower in Concord and The Tom and Billie Long Patient Care
Tower in Walnut Creek, Ken ventured into the area of lead

gift fundraising with great success. Certainly, he is a man of
many talents.
Harry J. MacDannald, M.D., a recent Chief of Staff, made
the following observations about Ken in the April issue of
Physician News.
“To be the longest-serving CEO in California is no small feat.
Though a CEO is in charge of an organization, he has to
serve demands from many different people. Boards of
directors, medical staff members, community and business
leaders, donors, and myriad governmental agencies all
require satisfaction. I have been impressed with Ken’s
indefatigable ability to remain engaged in so many aspects
of John Muir Health. His career is not only admirable for his
dedication, but his years of service have been a great gift to
the communities that we serve by cultivating an organization
dedicated to providing excellent care for our patients.”
