COURSE OF THE RESEARCH FOR SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE IN JAPAN<br />

World aquaculture has grown dramatically in the last 50 years mainly in Asia, <strong>and</strong> is expected<br />

to increase further. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, aquaculture production of Japan has changed almost stably,<br />

<strong>and</strong> occupies an important position in the entire fishery, but the affaires of that are in very severe.<br />

It is due to such as increased production costs of fuel oil <strong>and</strong> fish meal for raw material of feed,<br />

restraint purchasing of high grade fish <strong>and</strong> sluggish of fish price by economic recession, <strong>and</strong><br />

damage of red tide <strong>and</strong> outbreak of disease. From such a situation, aquaculture industry of Japan<br />

has fallen into the production structure of high cost <strong>and</strong> low price.<br />

To improve the management of aquaculture, it is necessary to shift to a sustainable <strong>and</strong><br />

profitable structure by a review of the entire production process. We organized an overview of<br />

aquaculture (aquaculture production system) as shown below, <strong>and</strong> have discussed research<br />

problems <strong>and</strong> directions of solutions in each category. For sustainable aquaculture, industry must<br />

reduce the environmental impact, as well as needs to be profitable. For the low impact on<br />

environment, research <strong>and</strong> technological innovation are needed on artificial seed production that<br />

is independent on natural resources, improvement of culture methods <strong>and</strong> feed quality unaffected<br />

to water quality <strong>and</strong> so on. To increase revenue, it is necessary to practice continual cost savings<br />

by analysis each process of aquaculture production <strong>and</strong> to develop a way to add high value to<br />

products. Thus, it is important that aquaculture is regarded as an integrated production system for<br />

considering the future research.<br />
