DU R IN G the past few years an organized propag<strong>and</strong>a largely subsidized by a<br />
retired steel manufacturer has endeavored through the instrumentalities of<br />
the press, the public schools, <strong>and</strong> the pulpit, to preach their so-called doctrine<br />
of “peace,” in which are promulgated to the people the wickedness of all<br />
past wars, the needlessness of the present great war (which they oracularly<br />
declare will be the last), <strong>and</strong> the wastefulness of all m ilitary preparations.<br />
Moral Suasion <strong>and</strong> Arbitration are henceforth to settle all disputes between nations;<br />
<strong>and</strong> the U. S., as the exponent of justice <strong>and</strong> m orality (they claim ) should lead the way<br />
by dism antling forts, scrapping its ships, <strong>and</strong> disb<strong>and</strong>ing its <strong>Army</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Navy</strong>. The<br />
names of W ashington, Jackson, Scott, Taylor, Lincoln, Grant, Dewey <strong>and</strong> McKinley are<br />
held to obloquy as exponents of “m ilita rism ;” <strong>and</strong> the soldiers who in the Revolution
