160TH COMPANY, COAST A R T IL L E R Y CORPS<br />
W as organized September 1, 1907, at the Presidio of San Francisco, Cal., by a division<br />
of the 10th Company, C. A. C. The lOth Company, Coast Artillery Corps, was originally<br />
designated Battery "M ." 1st Artillery. A t the close of the Mexican W ar it was<br />
sent to Oregon on account of Indian trouble. Four years later it was transferred to<br />
Florida for Indian campaigns there. In January, 1861, the Company was at Brownsville,<br />
Texas, <strong>and</strong> embarked for the North at the beginning of the Civil War. During this<br />
war most of its service was on the South Atlantic Coast. The 1st Artillery participated<br />
in 98 battles, sieges, or other actions during the Civil W ar, <strong>and</strong> always with effectiveness<br />
<strong>and</strong> gallantry. It had 19 officers killed or wounded, which was more than the average<br />
on duty with the regiment at any one time.<br />
Battery "M ,” at the battle of Olustee, Fla., is noted by Fox’s Regim ental Losses of<br />
the Civil W ar," as among the batteries having suffered the heaviest losses during the<br />
war.<br />
During the period following the Civil W ar the company was on duty in different<br />
parts of the country, in garrison <strong>and</strong> in connection with election troubles. It served<br />
also in connection with the Fenian Disturbances <strong>and</strong> numerous riots due to strikes <strong>and</strong><br />
other events. Participated in the Spanish-American War.<br />
After the division of the 10th Company the 160th Company remained on duty at the<br />
Presidio of San Francisco until November I, 1908, when it proceeded by rail to Fort<br />
Stevens, Oregon, for station. There the usual routine included post duty, ten-inch gun<br />
drill, infantry <strong>and</strong> field artillery drill, practice marches, service with m ilitia, etc. In<br />
less than eight years since organization this company has had 28 different assignments<br />
of officers, 16 of which were assigned to the comm<strong>and</strong> of the company by orders. Notwithst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
these m any changes the company has held high figures of merit in target<br />
practice. Because of their soldierly qualities they were selected for duty at Fort Rosecrans<br />
during the period of the <strong>Panama</strong>-<strong>California</strong> Exposition.<br />
13TH BAND, C. A. C.<br />
The 13th B<strong>and</strong>, Coast Artillery Corps, was organized at Fort Dupont, Delaware, on<br />
March 1, 1907. The b<strong>and</strong>'s first engagement in public was with the Delaware Fire Company<br />
of W ilm ington, Delaware, September 27, 1907. On October 5, 1908. the b<strong>and</strong> proceeded<br />
to Philadelphia, Pa., to participate in the m ilitary parade of the celebration of<br />
Founders’ Week. May 29, 1909. the b<strong>and</strong> proceeded to Gettysburg, Pa., to participate<br />
in the ceremonies attending the unveiling of a monument to the Regular <strong>Army</strong>, on the<br />
Gettysburg battlefield. On September 21, 1909, the b<strong>and</strong> proceeded to W ilm ington,<br />
Delaware, to take part in the celebration incident to the dedication of a monument to<br />
Captain De Vries. On October 30, 1909, the b<strong>and</strong> proceeded to Salem, N. .1., to take part<br />
in a parade incident to the H istorical Celebration of the 234th Anniversary of the founding<br />
of that town. October 20, 1910, the b<strong>and</strong> proceeded to Dover, Deleware, to participate<br />
in the Old Home W eek celebration. On September 10, 1912, the b<strong>and</strong> proceeded to<br />

On September 23, 1912, the b<strong>and</strong> proceeded to Altoona, Pa., to porticipate in the celebration<br />
of the 50th Anniversary of the Loyal Governors' Convention. September 24, 25<br />
<strong>and</strong> 26, 1912, played during President's luncheon at the Logan House Hotel, Altoona,<br />
Pa. October 15, 1914, the b<strong>and</strong> participated in a m ilitary parade <strong>and</strong> review of Old<br />
Home Week celebration in W ilm ington, Delaware.<br />
The b<strong>and</strong> left Ft;. Dupont, Delaware. December 9, 1914, on change of station for<br />
Fort Rosecrans, Cal.. for temporary duty during the <strong>Panama</strong>-<strong>California</strong> International<br />
Exposition at San Diego, Cal. Arrived at Fort Rosecrans, Cal., December 14, 1914.
