NEW DIVING LAUNCHES<br />
A<br />
contract for the construction <strong>of</strong> three<br />
new 20 metre Diving Launches for<br />
Clearance Diving Teams One. Two<br />
<strong>and</strong> Four was placed with a West <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
Company during October 1992 AH three<br />
craft are currentl> scheduled for delivers' to<br />
the RAN during mid-<strong>1993</strong>.<br />
PREVIOUS RAN CRAFT<br />
NAMED SEAL, PORPOISE<br />
AND SHARK<br />
SEAL (11<br />
SEAL, which was transferred to the RAN<br />
from the Army Water Transport forces during<br />
World War II. was allotted to the diving<br />
branch in 1945. She subsequently served as a<br />
diving boat for 23 years before being retired<br />
from service in 1968.<br />
PORPOISE a I<br />
The 200 ton Concrete Ammunition Lighter<br />
(CAL 207) was modified to a Diving Barge in<br />
1955 <strong>and</strong> renamed PORPOISE. Her<br />
conversion included the addition <strong>of</strong> a<br />
classroom <strong>and</strong> the installation <strong>of</strong> a derrick<br />
post to assist in diving operations. When<br />
completed PORPOISE was towed to a<br />
mooring <strong>of</strong>f Clark Isl<strong>and</strong> in Sydney Harbour.<br />
She was not commissioned. She was<br />
subsequently laid up during the early 1970s<br />
<strong>and</strong> finally sold in the early 1980s.<br />
SEAL (II) <strong>and</strong> PORPOISE ill)<br />
During 1965 it was decided to purchase three<br />
second-h<strong>and</strong> Royal <strong>Navy</strong> HAM class inshore<br />
minesweepers for conversion to Diving<br />
Tenders. Two boats, POPHAM <strong>and</strong><br />
WINTRINGHAM, were acquired in May<br />
1966 <strong>and</strong> a third boat. N1. ASH AM m March<br />
1967. Of the first pair. WINTRINGHAM<br />
was converted by Halvorsens <strong>and</strong> renamed<br />
SEAL on entering service in December 1968.<br />
whilst NEASHAM remained laid upat Garden<br />
Isl<strong>and</strong> until 1972 when she was taken in h<strong>and</strong><br />
for conversion by Storey <strong>and</strong> Keers <strong>of</strong><br />
Balmain. Renamed PORPOISE, she was<br />
h<strong>and</strong>ed o\er on 13 June 1973. As conversion<br />
costs for the first pair proved substantially<br />
higher than originally expected, the third unit.<br />
POPHAM. was not convened. She remained<br />
laid up in reserve before being listed for<br />
disposal in December 1975.<br />
SEAL <strong>and</strong> PORPOISE subsequently<br />
served as diving tenders <strong>and</strong> navigation<br />
training craft until 1989 when they were finally<br />
withdrawn from service <strong>and</strong> disposed <strong>of</strong> after<br />
reaching the end <strong>of</strong> their useful lives.<br />
SHARK<br />
The 11 -5 metre Naval Auxiliary Patrol (NAP)<br />
vessel SHARK was requisitioned for naval<br />
service on 17 July 1942. Armed with a .303<br />

Primary Role<br />
Capable <strong>of</strong> carrying up to 16 divers <strong>and</strong> attendants plus associated diving equipment (2<br />
tonnes). Support is required for continuous. 24 hour diving operations with periods both<br />
underway <strong>and</strong> at anchor, in depths <strong>of</strong> water to 54 metres inclusive <strong>and</strong> employing self<br />
contained <strong>and</strong> surface supplied breathing apparatus.<br />
Secondary Role<br />
Be capable <strong>of</strong> carrying out harbour patrols <strong>and</strong> assist in low level policing duties.<br />
Speed<br />
Continuous working speed <strong>of</strong> at least 25 knots in the loaded departure condition in calm<br />
tropical conditions with a clean hull for a period <strong>of</strong> four hours. A speed <strong>of</strong> at least 20<br />
knots when fully loaded in sea state 2. Minimum maintainable speed <strong>of</strong> 3 knots or less.<br />

(RAN)<br />
Vickcrs machine gun <strong>and</strong> four Mk 7 depth<br />
charges, she entered service on Sydney Harbour<br />
on 25 August the same year. SHARK, which<br />
was purchased outright by the RAN in <strong>Apr</strong>il<br />
1944. finally paid <strong>of</strong>f on 27 August 1945. She<br />
was subsequently sold back to her original<br />
owner in 1946.<br />
