the First World War, been the<br />
most intriguing ot all the<br />
warships in the Royal<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Navy</strong>.<br />

For HMAS Platypus <strong>and</strong> her current<br />

<strong>and</strong> OT WAY. the opportunity lo promote "the<br />
silent service" was realised dunng "Submarine<br />
Week", seven days in late November, set aside<br />
to celebrate the Silver Anniversary <strong>of</strong> the<br />
present boats <strong>and</strong> the shoreside facilities in<br />

The week ot activities began on the<br />
Monday. ^ \ Nov ember, w uh the opening at the<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n National Maritime Museum ol a<br />
display ol photographs <strong>and</strong> artifacts from the<br />
establishments own "museum" Since the<br />
arrival m Sydney ot the first generations boats<br />

tive classes ol submarines, totalling 17 vessels<br />

development or the submarine arm. providing<br />

HMA Submarines OTWAY <strong>and</strong> OVENS<br />
slipped quietly from then base on the Thursdav<br />
evening lo rendezvous with other surface Fleei<br />
units on Friday morning. 2.1 November. The<br />
occasion was a ceremonial Fleet Fntry by the<br />
two boats, hut (his time with various Sydney<br />

No anniversary could be celebrated w it hi nit<br />
a re-union parn or commemorative hook For<br />
the submariners, they enjoyed both. The former<br />
was held in Darling Harbour, overlooking one<br />
<strong>of</strong> the boats moored in Cockle Bay <strong>and</strong> (he<br />

boats came on Saturday <strong>and</strong> Sunday in Darling<br />
Harbour. For the second time, two Oberon<br />
boats were moored inside the bay. The weekend<br />
proved most successful, with many thous<strong>and</strong>s<br />
visiting the two boats over an eleven hour<br />
period<br />

Staff saw the church sen ice attended by several<br />
hundred current <strong>and</strong> former submariners. After<br />
the ceremony, most in attendance retired to the<br />
northern hill for a UHO lunch.<br />
