34 RESTAURANTS
Mediterranean
Como I-4, Praha 1, Václavské nám. 45, MMuzeum,
tel. (+420) 222 24 72 40, eat@ComoRestaurant.cz,
www.ComoRestaurant.cz. Como is the new Mediterranean
restaurant that replaced the Asian one at the
Jalta Hotel. Grilled meats and pastas dominate, but
there's also a fun tapas menu. The interior is cool and
classy; service respectable. The fettuccine with seasonal
vegetables, the tuna steak or any of their salads are all
recommended. QOpen 06:30 - 01:00. (185 - 790Kč).
JAB
Fluidum Praha 3, Lucemburská 1497/6, MJiřího z
Poděbrad, tel. (+420) 222 22 17 02, www.fluidumrestaurant.cz.
Fluidum is as smooth as its name suggests;
a good wine list complements the small yet varied
menu. We sampled perfect calamari, steak (not cooked
to specification but so very tender), pork tenderloin and
salmon, all prime cuts. Vegetable sides are a welcome
sight and the bread is warm and served with garlic oil.
Czech dishes and pasta make slightly cheaper choices
and there is a gourmet menu available. Subtle lighting,
comfortable seating and service. Delicious. QOpen
11:00 - 23:00, Sat, Sun 12:00 - 22:00. (200 - 450Kč).
PAG
Oliva Praha 2, Plavecká 4, tel. (+420) 222 52 02 88,
www.olivarestaurant.cz. The superb Le Bistrot de Marlene
is a hard space to fill, but Oliva, while being a wholly different
restaurant, has managed to keep folks happy with its Mediterranean
flair and flavour. A one-time chef from La Perle de
Prague provides a succulent, sense sensation with almost
every dish to counter the somewhat twee interior. Theme
nights with guest chefs, a good wine list and superb olive
oils add to the great service and menu. Tram N° 3, 7, 16, 17,
21 to Výton. Q Open 11:30 - 15:00; 18:00 - 24:00. Closed
Sun. (150 - 550Kč). A
Mexican & Tex-Mex
Amigos J-5, Praha 2, Anny Letenské 16, MNám. Míru,
tel. (+420) 222 25 05 94, www.amigos.cz. The menu
is enormous, amusing, and with some topless shots to
keep you turning the pages. The spice in the air and eyes
bodes well for chilli-ed authenticity. Chimichanga is as tasty
as it's fun to say, steaks are large and tender, vegetarian
options abound, cocktails are cheap and delivery is available.
What more do you want? QOpen 11:30 - 24:00.
(50 - 160Kč). ES
Azteca B-4, Praha 1, Říční 9, tel. (+420) 257 32
73 89, www.azteca.cz. The menu offers the standard
Mexican fare with drinks in the same vein: mojitos and
margaritas, in fact, the bar does a fair business on its
own, apart from the spicy food on offer in the restaurant.
Excellent, spicy nachos. Although we're not too sure about
the OTT neo-Alamo décor, Azteca offers good fajitas, enchiladas
and quesadilla, along with over 25 types of tequila.
Lunch menu 70Kč but there’s nothing Mexican on it. Good
wine list, Staropramen for 25Kč and Corona 70Kč. QOpen
11:00 - 24:00. (70 - 380Kč). A
Cantina A-4, Praha 1, Újezd 38, MMalostranská, tel.
(+420) 257 31 71 73, www.restauracecantina.cz. A
warm and atmospheric Mexican, serving Texan-sized portions
of decent grub and small swimming pool sized margaritas that
slip down far too easily. The fajitas are excellent, although we
suggest you may want some extra salsa to add some zing.
QOpen 11:30 - 24:00. (120 - 300Kč). AEB
Hacienda Mexicana J-2, Praha 1, Klimentská
46, MNám. Republiky, tel. (+420) 221 85 10
95, www.mexicana.cz. The restaurant is loud and
not just on your ears. The décor is bright and in your
face, and while you can disappear in the labyrinthine
rooms, it may also mean the waiters can't find you
again. Good Czech-Mex and cocktails are available in
this popular though somewhat pricey chain restaurant.
QOpen 11:30 - 23:30. Also at Praha 4, BB Centrum.
PTAUIG
Middle Eastern
Dahab E-2, Praha 1, Dlouhá 33, MNám. Republiky,
tel. (+420) 224 82 73 75, www.dahab.cz. Escape the
Baroque and step into this cool oasis of masterful mosaics,
oriental carpets and sweet tobacco smoke bubbling
from water pipes. Dishes run the gamut of Middle Eastern
delights and drinks are concocted from recipes gathered
from around the globe. Authenticity's evil side is witnessed
in the squat toilet offered to horrified tourists (there are
Western alternatives). QOpen 14:00 - 01:00. (65 - 330Kč).
PTAEGS
Karavanseráj G/H-5, Praha 1, Masarykovo nábř.
22, MKarlovo Nám., tel. (+420) 224 93 03 90,
www.karavanseraj.cz. Superb Lebanese and Indian
restaurant and cultural space - a programme of events,
music and exhibitions is ongoing - hidden along the river
but sadly without a terrace. The wide and authentic
menu more than makes up for this. Traditional cuisine,
fuul medames, stuffed vine leaves, lamb, grilled meats,
fattoush and much more join fewer Indian offerings. Water
pipes add to the ambience. Delicious, open for breakfast
and with a good lunch offer. Q Open 09:00 - 23:00, Fri
09:00 - 24:00, Sat 12:00 - 24:00, Sun 12:00-22:00.
(100 - 280Kč). E
Metropol Music Cafe I-3, Praha 1, Na Poříčí 12,
MFlorenc, tel. (+420) 775 322 895, metropol@
PrahaEntertainment.com, www.metropol-prague.
com.. They bill themselves as an Oriental restaurant
- the menu boasts a variety of yummy dishes
like hummus, falafel, chicken masala and beef fillet.
We are very impressed with Chef Sunny Passi - he's
got a way with flavors. The restaurant is above a
café and music club; but no loud music worries, the
restaurant is glass enclosed. QOpen 09:00 - 03:00.
110Kč-545Kč. JAE
Pizza
Coloseum I-4, Praha 1, Ovocný trh 8, MMůstek,
tel. (+420) 224 23 83 55, www.pizzacoloseum.cz.
A pizza-maker slaving away in front of the flames of a
wood-burning oven is the only spectacle you'll witness
at this coliseum. Sample excellent pastas and pizzas
made with real mozzarella in a rustic setting. Try the
Calabrese, it's what Yanks call a pepperoni pie. QOpen
11:00 - 23:30. Also at F-3, Vodičkova 32. (100 - 200Kč).
PAB
Giallo Rosa F-3, Praha 1, Jakubská 2, MNám. Republiky,
tel. (+420) 604 89 89 89. This small take-away place
decked out in football scarves serves the closest thing to a
New York-style pizza that we’ve seen in Prague. What’s more
amazing is that it also provides as much oregano and spicy
oil as you need, gratis. QOpen 11:30 - 24:00, Fri 11:30 -
02:00, Sat 12:00 - 02:00, Sun 12:00 - 23:00. (From 25Kč/
