FOREWORD
Oh the weather outside is frightful…and everyone fears
the flu. But buddle up and be merry! It’s a fabulous time to
be in Prague. Chocolate Santa’s have been in the stores
since October, the street decorations are lit and everyone
is busy booking tables in their favourite restaurants for a
last minute Christmas party.
Local sociologists and sales researchers are predicting a
more spiritual, less consumerist holiday this year. With the
economic crisis still tightening people’s wallets, experts
say people will cut down on their gift giving and purchase
less expensive and more practical gifts. Prague’s Christmas
markets offer smaller, more personal gifts, just right
for showing someone you care economically. Full details
on the holidays, including Christmas markets, concerts
and New Year’s Eve events can be found on P. 12.
Remember the controversial art exhibition Entropa? It was
commissioned on behalf of the Czech European Union
presidency and showed stereotypes of each of the 27
EU member states. It caused an uproar in some circles
because of the potentially offensive nature of some of
the representations. The more peaceful Swedes have
assumed the EU helm and have put out Eurodream, a box
of chocolates with a different flavour representing each
country. The Czech chocolate is shockingly not beer (that
went to Belgium) but potato. Who wants to eat a potato
flavoured chocolate? Don’t worry; biting in, you’ll actually
taste rum. Yep, Czechs make their version of rum from
potatoes. Another great gift idea.
Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and Happy
New Year!
