SUBJECT TO CHANGE

A SPECIAL INVITATION
Jo Loss
California State PTA President, 2009-2011
Are you ready for another fabulous convention? I would love to have your company at the
112 th Annual California State PTA Convention in Long Beach this year, April 28 to May 1.
This is your best opportunity to learn, explore options and create a great PTA. Former first lady
Barbara Bush once said: “You just don’t luck into things as much as you’d like to think you do.
You build step by step, whether it’s friendships or opportunities.” Join us to build positive change by
enhancing the lives of your children and families.
Wow! Have we got opportunities for you! Every California State PTA Commission and the Legislation Team will be
presenting workshops to meet your specific needs. The hot topics this year are parent engagement, bullying, foster care,
male involvement, and a wide variety of workshops in advocacy, leadership, finance, and a lot more. You will have many
opportunities for networking with others who share your passion for children and families, and go home re-energized by
everyone’s enthusiasm.
During the general sessions, your participation in the business of the association is critical to the work of PTA. Your voice
is vitally important in establishing the direction and priorities of the California State PTA. And don’t forget, this is an
election year for the state PTA officers. Come to convention to make new friends and take advantage of these
opportunities. It will be fabulous!
Kathy Stevenson
California State PTA Vice President for Convention, 2009-2011
We are returning to Southern California this year, holding our annual convention at the Long
Beach Convention Center. I’d like to thank everyone who turned in evaluation forms from
last year’s convention. It really helped us plan for this year’s activities. We’ve kept what you
liked and made changes where we could.
A new feature we think you’ll really like is the multiple attendee registration discount. When you register up to five (5)
full-time (non-student) attendees from your unit, council, or district you will automatically be eligible for a progressive
discount, with a potential savings of up to $100. As requested in the evaluations, there will be a string of workshops
specifically designed for council and district officers. We are also, bringing back the special event – we call it the BIG
BEACH BALL. This is one party you won’t want to miss.
Online registration begins on February 2, as does the mail-in service. When you register by March 31 you will receive
your name badge and workshop tickets at an address of your choice. Be sure to stop by the Registration Booth when you
arrive and pick up your voting card and special tote bag.
The PTA Store and Exhibit Hall hours will have even larger blocks of time than during previous conventions for you to
meet and talk with exhibitors. The Exhibit Hall will again be open FREE to everyone Thursday, April 28. Look for the
“Convention-at-a-Glance” on the inside cover for an overview of our daily activities.
The main purpose of our convention, besides offering workshops is, of course, conducting the business of the PTA.
General Meetings will be in five (5) sessions. You will have the opportunity to vote for new state officers, see and hear
the amazing California State PTA Reflections winners, listen to remarkable speakers, and take part in exciting debates.
The Convention Commission and I hope you have an experience like you’ve never had before!
GENERAL INFORMATION
112 th Annual California State PTA Convention • April 28 - May 1, 2011 in Long Beach
Activities will be held at:
Long Beach Convention Center, 300 Ocean Boulevard; phone: (562) 436-3636
Hyatt-Regency Hotel, 200 South Pine Avenue; phone: (562) 491-1234
Convention is an excellent PTA investment, the ultimate
leadership experience, and a PTA budget expense upon
approval of your association. Check with your district for
its orientation schedule and additional information to help
you plan your trip and make your experience the best it can
be. You will return home with new ideas, improved skills
and recharged energy!
GENERAL MEETINGS
The primary purpose of convention is to conduct the
business of the association. This is an opportunity for
delegates to influence the direction of the California State
PTA for the next year and term. Delegates will debate, vote
and adopt resolutions; approve legislation policies; approve
any changes to the bylaws; and elect new officers for next
term.
In addition to business, meetings are filled with motivating
and informative speakers; exciting student entertainment;
award presentations; and much, much more.
Five general meetings are scheduled to carry out California
State PTA business. Delegates are responsible for attending
these meetings, and are encouraged to take notes for
reporting back to units, councils, and districts. Come to
convention, take part and see “the big picture” of what PTA
is all about!
Prize Drawing
Special prize drawings will take place before the close of
convention on Sunday, May 1. Fabulous prizes are donated
by many of the exhibitors. You must be present to win!
Keynote Speaker
Everyone is talking about school reform, but engaging
families doesn’t seem to be part of the conversation. Learn
about the growing evidence that organized parents and
community members can be powerful agents
of change with their involvement and support
of schools. Come to the second general
meeting on Friday, April 29 and listen as
keynote speaker Anne T. Henderson presents:
Family Engagement: Why School Reform
Can’t Happen Without It.
Henderson is a Senior Consultant in Community
Organizing and Engagement at the Annenberg Institute for
School Reform. She has written and co-authored several
books and articles on the subject of parent involvement,
vote or speak at a microphone. When a PTA has more members
who wish to attend than the number of delegates to which the
unit, council or district PTA is entitled, the additional attendees
may preregister or register on-site as full-time or one-day
A student member under 18 years of age wishing to register
REGISTRATION PROCEDURES
REGISTRATION OVERVIEW
Online registration is the preferred method for convention
registration. Members participating in convention activities are
encouraged to register online or by mail (form on page 8). Fees
entitle participants to attend the general meetings, workshops and
the exhibit hall. Fees are nonrefundable.
Special Notes
Council and district fees are not collected through the state
PTA registration process. Check with your council and/or
district PTA for other fees, and their fee procedures.
There are NO REFUNDS for state PTA registration, event
fees, or pre-ordered Promo Packages.
FAXED registrations will not be accepted.
Children at Convention
Children under 12 – Parents may register children under 12 at
no charge. Special badges will be issued allowing them to
accompany a parent to meetings or workshops on a spaceavailable
basis. If a workshop is at capacity, children will not
be admitted. Please be considerate of fellow PTA members
when bringing children to meetings.
Children 12 and older – Must register and pay student
registration fees.
There are three date blocks to keep in mind when registering
Feb. 2 to Mar 31 – The lowest registration fees offered, and
your name badge and workshop tickets are mailed to you
before convention begins.
April 1 to April 15 – Fees are increased. Your name badge and
workshop tickets will not be mailed, but will be ready upon
your arrival at convention.
April 27 to May 1 – On-site registration fees apply, and are
higher than the two previous periods, listed above.
Discount pricing is available for the first time this year. When
multiple (up to five) full-time (non-student) attendees from the
same unit, council, or district register for convention, a
progressive discount schedule will be applied. Here’s how it works;
The first attendee pays full price
The second attendee’s fee is reduced by $10
The third attendee’s fee is reduced by $20
The fourth attendee’s fee is reduced by $30
The fifth attendee’s fee is reduced by $40
This is a potential savings of $100 for your unit! The discount is
applied regardless of when you register. Your best savings will be
realized when you register online before March 31. Discount
does not apply to students, one-day or exhibit hall passes.
Below is an example of discounts for full-time voting delegates:
Attendee 2/2 to 3/31 4/1 to 4/15 Onsite
First $ 199 $ 239 $ 259
Second $ 189 $ 229 $ 249
Third $ 179 $ 219 $ 239
Fourth $ 169 $ 209 $ 229
Fifth $ 159 $ 199 $ 219
If more than five individuals from your unit, council, or district
attend convention as full-time (non-student) delegates, their fee
will be at the same rate as the fifth registered individual from
your unit, council, or district.
NEW UNITS AND COUNCILS REGISTRATION
Special guidelines are necessary for recently organized units and
councils awaiting acceptance of membership into the California
State PTA at the pre-convention Board of Managers meeting in
April.
1. Applications for membership into the California State PTA by
new units and councils will be accepted prior to the preconvention
Board of Managers meeting.
2. All required dues, applications, and approved bylaws must be
processed by district PTA prior to California State Board of
Managers acceptance.
3. Registrants from new units or councils not yet accepted by the
Board of Managers must register on-site. Bring a current PTA
2011 California State PTA Convention — Registration Book

membership card and the earliest advanced registration fee.
They will be registered as nonvoting attendees.
4. Make checks payable to the California State PTA. New
unit/council PTA status will be verified on-site.
MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
You must show proof of membership to qualify for the
discounted rates shown on the previous page. Once verified (and
payment received), your name badge and tickets will be
processed. You can verify your membership by:
1. Entering the user ID and password provided on your
membership card when registering online.
2. Sending a copy of your membership card with your mail-in
registration form.
3. Bringing a copy of your membership card to the Registration
Booth at convention.
4. Failure to prove membership will cause your convention fees
to be assessed at the non-member rate.
TRANSFERS AND NAME CHANGES
If you have registered in advance and are unable to attend
convention, your registration may be transferred to another
person. Payment arrangements are to be managed between you,
your replacement and your unit/council PTA president.
If you registered online
• Provide your user ID and password to your replacement.
• If your replacement makes online corrections (name,
workshop, etc.) by March 31, then name badge and workshop
tickets will be mailed to him or her.
• If your replacement makes online corrections after March 31,
he or she can pick up the material at the Preregistered Booth
during convention.
If you mailed your registration
• Transfers must be made through district PTA or on-site.
• Give your original bar-coded confirmation letter to your
replacement. He/she must bring it, along with their
membership card to the Preregistration Booth to complete the
transfer.
Changes may be made on-site; however, workshops may not be
available for exchange and will be changed on a space-available
basis only. Transfers who have not submitted changes must
present a current PTA membership card and the bar-coded
confirmation letter to the Registration Booth. If no membership
card is presented, then the replacement must pay the non-PTA
member fee and will not be eligible to vote in the general
meetings.
WHEN CONVENTION BEGINS
Upon your arrival at convention, go to the Registration Booth to
pick up additional convention items that were not mailed (tote
2. Current membership card (if not previously verified); and
4. Students must bring a signed Parent/Guardian Approval and
Consent to Treatment Form. Forms are available online at
www.capta.org and through district PTAs. Mailed copies are
not accepted.
Using Credentials
Credentials may not be shared. Once convention begins, attendees
may not transfer credentials to another individual. The only exception
is if the credentials have not been used and the initial attendee
will not be participating in convention activities. Name badges
are provided to each person attending convention, and are required
for entrance to workshops, general meetings and exhibit hall.
Voting cards will be provided to voting delegates at registration
and will not be replaced if lost.
Stop at the Registration Booth to pick up your voting card (if
entitled), badge holder, ribbons, tote, and if ordered, the special
ribbon pack and convention CD. If you ordered a Promo Pack or
donated to the Sleep In for PTA you will be issued a ticket to
retrieve your items from a designated pick-up location, at your
convenience.
If you have received your badge and workshop tickets in advance
AND you have no changes, you may go directly to general
meetings, workshops, and exhibit hall prior to checking in.
