MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the California State PTA is to positively impact the lives of all children and families by representing our members and empowering and supporting them with skills in advocacy, leadership and communication. California State PTA Board of Managers, Adopted October 2009 STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING By registering, you agree to the terms and conditions set forth in the registration information of the Registration Book for the 2011 California State PTA Convention in Long Beach. This registration is transferable. Payments for transfers must be handled between you and your replacement and your unit/council/district PTA president. There are no refunds for California State PTA registration and event fees. PHOTOGRAPHY RELEASE By registering for or attending the California State PTA Convention, you hereby grant and assign the California State PTA and its legal representatives the irrevocable and unrestricted right to use and publish for editorial, trade, advertising or any other purpose and in any manner and medium, including website and Internet promotion, all photographic, video, and digital images of you and your guests taken while in attendance at the California State PTA Convention. GENERAL INFORMATION 112 th Annual California State PTA Convention • April 28 - May 1, 2011 in Long Beach Activities will be held at: Long Beach Convention Center, 300 Ocean Boulevard; phone: (562) 436-3636 Hyatt-Regency Hotel, 200 South Pine Avenue; phone: (562) 491-1234 Convention is an excellent PTA investment, the ultimate leadership experience, and a PTA budget expense upon approval of your association. Check with your district for its orientation schedule and additional information to help you plan your trip and make your experience the best it can be. You will return home with new ideas, improved skills and recharged energy! GENERAL MEETINGS The primary purpose of convention is to conduct the business of the association. This is an opportunity for delegates to influence the direction of the California State PTA for the next year and term. Delegates will debate, vote and adopt resolutions; approve legislation policies; approve any changes to the bylaws; and elect new officers for next term. In addition to business, meetings are filled with motivating and informative speakers; exciting student entertainment; award presentations; and much, much more. Five general meetings are scheduled to carry out California State PTA business. Delegates are responsible for attending these meetings, and are encouraged to take notes for reporting back to units, councils, and districts. Come to convention, take part and see “the big picture” of what PTA is all about! Prize Drawing Special prize drawings will take place before the close of convention on Sunday, May 1. Fabulous prizes are donated by many of the exhibitors. You must be present to win! Keynote Speaker Everyone is talking about school reform, but engaging families doesn’t seem to be part of the conversation. Learn about the growing evidence that organized parents and community members can be powerful agents of change with their involvement and support of schools. Come to the second general meeting on Friday, April 29 and listen as keynote speaker Anne T. Henderson presents: Family Engagement: Why School Reform Can’t Happen Without It. Henderson is a Senior Consultant in Community Organizing and Engagement at the Annenberg Institute for School Reform. She has written and co-authored several books and articles on the subject of parent involvement, THREE WAYS TO REGISTER! Mapp); No Child Left Behind: What’s in it for Parents (2002) and The Case for Parent Leadership (2004). Her research includes how engaging families can improve student achievement, particularly among students in diverse and low-income communities. She has worked with organizations representing parents and community members. Her clients include the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence in Lexington, Kentucky; the Connecticut Department of Education; the Los Angeles Unified School District; and the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region in Washington, D.C. A native of Trenton, New Jersey, Henderson graduated from Oberlin College, and received a Master’s Degree in politics from the Eagleton Institute at Rutgers University. She and her husband, Basil, live in Washington, D.C. Their daughter Amy-Louise has recently completed a Master’s in Social Work at Hunter College. Honors include Phi Beta Kappa and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship designation. ACTIVITIES FOR EVERYONE We have three very special activities lined up this year. • Town Hall Meeting – Thursday, April 28 at 1:30 p.m. Here is your opportunity to meet and interact with the National PTA president. Share ideas, and learn what you can do as a PTA leader in your community. • Big Beach Ball – Friday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. Dude! Catch the party wave! Food, music, dancing, games and prizes! Surf the room with your incoming and outgoing state officers. Win prizes! • Sleep In for PTA – Sunday, May 1 in the morning. Promote the importance of sleep for children and adults. Make a $20 donation to the PTA Healthy Lifestyles Grant Fund, and sleep in!
