little or no progress in trade and commerce. <strong>Nepal</strong>'s trade and<br />

commerce with India and Tibet was, however, highly developed<br />

at that time.<br />

The Muhammadans were carrying fire and sword into<br />

Europe; Crusades were being fought but there was religious<br />

toleration in <strong>Nepal</strong>. Even Muslims when they<br />

were allowed to<br />

settle in <strong>Nepal</strong> were living peacefully. Islam made its way even<br />

in India. India came under the sway of the Mughals and proselytyzing<br />

began but Hinduism found a secure place in <strong>Nepal</strong> (free<br />

from the proselytyzing effect of Islam). Under the patronage of<br />

the Mughal Emperors, Urdu and Persian languages developed<br />

while in <strong>Nepal</strong>, Sanskrit and Newari flourished unchecked.<br />

The general insecurity of life in Western Europe following<br />

the death of Charlemagne in 814 A. D. was largely responsible<br />

for the decline of art and architecture in Western Europe while<br />

they developed to a great extent under the patronage of the<br />

then rulers of <strong>Nepal</strong>.<br />

During the Age of Revival, one of the two phases of the<br />

Middle Ages, which begins about the opening of the eleventh<br />

century and borders on the fifteenth, European civilization was<br />

making slow but sure advances, and feudal anarchy was<br />

giving way to social order and strong monarchy. Renaissance or<br />

Revival of Learning was another characteristic which marked<br />

the last part of the medieval period in Europe.<br />

Unlike Europe, <strong>Medieval</strong> China was also developed in<br />

every respect. If the Tang period was a period of high cultural<br />

achievement, the golden Age of Poetry and sculpture, the Ming<br />

period opened up new artistic fields in drama and novel and in<br />

architecture.<br />
