The Kingdom<br />

of Gorkha<br />

When Alauddin, the Sultan of Delhi invaded and captured<br />

Mewar, the ruling families of the Rajputs were put to flight.<br />

Some betook themselves to the south and some to the northern<br />

Himalayas. Of the families which took to the south, Shivajee<br />

carved a kingdom for himself and earned name and fame.<br />

Prrthbi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern <strong>Nepal</strong>, was born<br />

in the family which took to the northern Himalayas.<br />

Yasho Brahma Shah, a descendant of the Rajputs who fled<br />

to <strong>Nepal</strong> from Mewar and who carved out a small principality<br />

of their own at Pallo Nuwakot (West No. 4) and Kaski, annexed<br />

Lamjung also to his kingdom. After the death of Yasho Brahma<br />

Shah his eldest son Nara Hari Shah ascended the throne of<br />

Lamjung. Drabya Shah then left Lamjung and made his way for<br />

Liglig. There was no love lost between the Ghale chieftain of<br />

Liglig and the people. Taking advantage of this situation Drabya<br />

Shah attacked Liglig. In this task Drabya Shah was helped by<br />

Ganesh Pande, Bhagirath Pant, Ganga Rana, Narayan Aryal<br />

and others. Backed by force and diplomacy Drabya Shah could<br />

defeat the Ghale ruler of Liglig and became king himself.<br />

Drabya Shah was very ambitious. He was not satisfied<br />

with Liglig alone. He wanted to conquer and annex the neigh-<br />
