with them and thus set up a united front. The king who could<br />

think of forming a united front for the national and religious<br />

independence of the country could certainly be called a farsighted<br />

king.<br />

Like his father, Shree Nivas Malla was also religious-mind<br />

ed. Though he did not practise austere penance like his father,<br />

he had profound respect for both Hinduism and Buddhism. He<br />

extended the period of the Kartic Nach from 15 days to almost<br />

a month. He endowed lands to meet the annual expenses<br />

of the 'Nach', also built the temple of Degutale' near the<br />

palace. In 801 N. E. (1681 A.D.) he built the grand temple of<br />

Bheemsen. He also introduced the practice of performing 'Asta<br />

Matrica' dance on the occasion of the Durga Puja festival.<br />

In 787 N. E., (1667 A.D.) he renovated the temple of<br />

Matsyendra Nath and set up an inscription. He endowed lands<br />

for the worship of Matsyendra Nath and also formulated rules<br />

for the Ratha Jatra.<br />

He built the five-storey temple of Kumvheshwar. On the<br />

full moon day of Shrawan people from different parts of the<br />

valley come to take a bath in the pond of Kumvheswar. Shree<br />

Nivas Malla rebuilt the temple for the convenience of the pil<br />

grims. This pond is known as 'Kantipukhu'. The water in this<br />

pond is supposed to have flowed from Gosainkunda. He died in<br />

807 N. E. (1687 A. D.)<br />

Yoganarendra Malla ascended the throne of Patan after<br />

the death of his father, Shree Nivas Malla in 807 N.E. 1687 A.D.)<br />

He set up the furious image of Bheemsen in which he was shown<br />

killing Dushashan. He put life force into it and also introduced<br />

the practice of Bheemsen Jatra. To the north of the palace he<br />
