New transmitter reduces cost of hazardous area temperature measurement &
display
As part of their new range of HART ® loop powered indicating temperature transmitters,
BEKA have introduced a field mounting, Ex n certified model with a galvanically isolated
Ex ia intrinsically safe sensor input. This combined certification permits the BA474ND
transmitter to be installed in Zone 2 or 22 hazardous areas and to be directly connected
to a temperature sensor in any gas or dust hazardous Zone, all without the need for
Zener barriers or galvanic isolators, thus significantly reducing equipment and
installation costs.
Incorporating a 20mm high five digit display plus a 31 segment bargraph, the new
BA474ND indicating temperature transmitter provides both a large easy to read local
temperature display, together with accurate 4/20mA analogue and HART ® digital outputs
for direct transmission to non-hazardous areas. The transmitter is housed in a robust
IP66 GRP enclosure with an armoured glass window suitable for installation in harsh
industrial and offshore environments. A separate terminal compartment with forward
facing terminals simplifies installation and maintenance.
ATEX and IECEx Ex nA, nL and tD certification allows the BA474ND indicating
temperature transmitter to be installed in Zones 2 gas and 22 dust hazardous areas
without the need for Zener barriers or certified isolators. The sensor input has been
certified as a separate galvanically isolated Ex ia intrinsically safe circuit with defined
input and output safety parameters, allowing direct connection to earthed or floating
resistance thermometers, thermocouples, voltage sources and resistance transducers
located in Zones 0, 1, 2, 20, 21 and 22.
The HART Communications Foundation has verified that the BA474ND complies with
the latest HART protocol standard revision 7, including diagnostics that monitor the
health of both the transmitter and the sensor. Transmitter configuration may be
performed via the HART ® digital communication or push buttons located behind a
separate sealed cover. When frequent local adjustments are required the transmitter
can be supplied with an external membrane keypad.
The transmitter will operate with three or four wire resistance thermometers and with
most common types of thermocouple to provide a display in o C, o F or K. Voltage
outputs from bridges such as load cells and resistive position transducers may also be
directly connected to the transmitter and displayed in engineering units. For
applications in poorly illuminated areas, an optional loop powered display backlight is
available which does not require additional field wiring.
Transmitter applications are further extended by optional dual alarms that may be used
to control Zone 2, 22 or safe area loads such as beacons and sounders. An alarm
accept facility is included allowing an alarm to be silenced for a predetermined time.

Accessories include pipe mounting kits and display escutcheons printed with customer
specified application and tag information; alternatively for applications requiring a
stainless steel tag, the transmitter can be supplied with a custom etched stainless steel
legend plate secured to the front of the instrument.
As with all BEKA products, these new transmitters are supplied calibrated to customer
requirements free of charge and have a three year guarantee. For customers wishing to
evaluate a new BA474ND indicating temperature transmitter, BEKA operate a free three
month sale or return evaluation service.
