Update from Your Board of Directors
Membership
At the start of 2012 the Board decided that a major push
should be made to attract new members. The main objectives
of the membership drive were to:
(a)
(b)
(c)
offset the 50 or so members that typically leave
the club each year
bolster our revenue as we target improving our
operations contribution
improve our Cash position in order to make some
much needed purchases of replacement equipment and afford a one-time balloon payment to h e l p
reduce the mortgage principal.
All this had to be to be achieved in a poor economy and one of the worst cycles in the golfing industry.
The plan involved a time-limited, fairly aggressive cut of our Initiation fees to attract the 50 new members we
were targeting. While our General Manager, Gord Sarkissian, took the lead on securing new members it
really could not have been accomplished without the help of our existing members who between them
brought in over 75 % of the 72 new members we signed up. Initiation fees were increased effective July 15 th
(after the new member goal was reached) but remain very competitive for a private golf course of this caliber.
As dues are the major contributor to our revenue stream, we needed to increase this revenue speedily by
bolstering our Full Play membership. It was decided to offer, on a limited time basis, a discounted transfer
rate. 22 Associate men and women took advantage of this offer resulting in an immediate impact on our
monthly cash flow. We reviewed members’ payment plan status which resulted in 10 members paying off
their plans. Altogether our Cash position improved by over $550,000 and we are going into the new fiscal
year with a stronger revenue position with the higher dues base which will be offset somewhat by resigning
members.
As outlined in our Strategic Plan, our two broad membership objectives are to grow dues revenue through
membership retention, replacement and growth and to work on enhancing membership value. The Membership
Committee has been exploring many options geared at both existing and potential members. One such
example is the Private Club Network that we recently joined which allows all of our members discounted golf
at over 150 private golf courses in various parts of North America.
Moving forward our membership rates remain at the July 15 th level and we have implemented very attractive
financing options to attract new members in these difficult market conditions. We are examining our marketing
plan in concert with management and the Communications Committee. Of our 72 new members, 58
came from the Tsawwassen/Ladner area. We believe there are opportunities to attract new members in outlying
markets. Our main source for new members will undoubtedly continue to be our existing members
who hopefully will want to share their club with others.
MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN
By Bill Carcary
Although October started out with great weather, it didn’t take long to make us realize
Fall was here. The Men’s Closing Day had to be cancelled after about 9 holes of
play, with inclement weather and poor playing conditions. Even though we hated to
do it, most seemed to concur that it was the right thing to do. Following the cancelation
a great lunch was served by Brad and his staff, and some fellowship was enjoyed.
The final event for the year was the Challenge Cup held on October 20th. The top twenty players for the year
played a Stableford match for the day. Congratulations to the winner of the day Murray Malloy, and Randy
Doherty the overall winner for the year.
As reported in an e-mail and postings throughout the clubhouse, effective October 20th, we have gone to
Winter Rules through the green, and the Winter Bunker rules of lift, rake, and place. In addition we have also
gone to our Inactive Season, however, scores still need to be posted whether playing courses with an Active
or Inactive season.
In regards to the posting of scores I have recently been informed of a number of instances where individuals
have not been posting all their scores. In respect for the integrity of the game please be sure to post all
scores! As per the Handicap Manual:
“Two basic Premises underlie the
Handicap System, namely that each
player will try to make the best score
at every hole in every round, regardless
of where the round was played,
and that the player will post every
acceptable round for peer review.
The player and the player’s Handicap
Committee have a joint responsibility
for adhering to these premises”
One of our biggest areas of concern
this year has been our Tee Time
booking and trying to make it fair and
equitable for all members. As a result
of this we have struck a committee to
come up with solutions and have a
policy in place for next years golf season.
We will be requesting information
and feedback from members,
and will keep you up to date on our
progress.
WOMEN’S SECTION
By Kathi Hobbs
This will be my last report to the Beachcomber
as Women’s Captain. As I mentioned
in our Closing Luncheon, I learned a
lot about the workings of the Women’s Section
over the year. It seems by the time you
have it figured out, your time is over!
Both the Tuesday and Business Women have had their closing
meetings and all prizes and awards have been given out.
Mickie McCune, Laurene Whalley &
Sandra McKinnon.
Single Match Play, which was organized this year by Laraine Clenahan, was
also won by her. She received the Dunning Trophy with Anne Andrew winning
the Charuk Cup. Partner Match Play was won by Judy Jager and Julie Lyman, a
formidable couple to beat.
The Tuesday Partner Eclectic was won by Helen Austin and Deborah Edgeworth
with a net score of 57.
Our BCGA Pin Round 18 Hole Winner was Marg Malloy with Jean Angers being
the winner of 9 Holes. The RCGA Pin was a tie this year between Marg Malloy
and Laraine Clenahan.
Merle Duffy
This year Merle Duffy had to share the Chip-in Trophy with Helen Austin. Birdies was won by Mellodee Rayne
and Sandies by Beverley Kaiser.
The Most Improved Golfer goes to Pam Windover.
Mellodee Rayne & Pam Windover
Our year long Eclectic Gross Winner was Mellodee Rayne with a 64.
Runner-up was Laraine Clenahan with a 69. Low Net Winner was
Laurene Whalley with a 44 and Runner-up was Deborah Edgeworth
with a 49 (BB9). Low Gross 9 Holers was Jean Angers and Low Net
was Susan Rivers.
Congratulations to all winners this year!
The Christmas Scramble and Lunch is on December 4th. There will
be the usual auction for The Kate Booth House, so remember to give your auction items to Barb Bastedo.
On a final note, I want to thank my Match Committee - Barb Bastedo, Elaine Dickie, Ann Hilton, Sandra Hargreaves,
Lynn Turner, Roberta Wing, Lynn Wood, Nancy Wobick, Mitzi Cannon and Grace Lai. A thank you to
Mary Adams for her help with the Club Championship.
Special thanks to the Pro Shop - Brent, Andy, Cory and Brad. And last, but not least, a great big thank you to
BUSINESS WOMEN’S SECTION
By Deb Mitchell
tournaments.
The leaves are turning and the rain is falling so it
must be time to close the book on another fun and
successful active golf season – and to review the
highlights of the year and acknowledge our event
winners. It was encouraging to see such great participation
and enthusiasm for our annual events and
We kicked things off on a fun note with the Captain vs. Vice-Captain
tournament. This year’s theme of Cool vs. Hot proved to be very
popular – the last time I saw that much neon pink in one place I was
sporting a spiral perm, parachute pants and some serious shoulder
pads!
Dyann Russell & Nancy Girling
Pretty in Pink!
Next up was the Tuesday vs. Business tournament and we couldn’t have asked for a better finish. With the
score tied it all came down to the final match – everyone waited anxiously for the results of the last pairing.
I can still hear the applause and cheers when the score went up and we saw the Business Women had
pulled through to grab the trophy (and bragging rights) back from the Tuesday Women. I’m sure it will be
another epic battle next year.
Then came the first Champions Reception tournament of the season: the 2-Day Eclectic tournament. This
event had another close finish. With 2 players tied at net 64 it came down to the better back 2 to declare
this year’s winner. Congratulations to Julie Lyman – she’s off to the Champion’s Reception to celebrate her
win!
Another highlight was the 3 rd Annual “Solheim Cup” competition between the Quilchena Business Women
and the Beach Grove Business Women. Day 1 saw Beach Grove take an 8-4 lead in the best ball team
match play. Quilchena made a run at a European-like comeback in Day 2 singles match play but came up
just short, with Beach Grove retaining the Cup - 12.5 to 11.5.
And of course then there’s the legendary Partner’s Challenge tournament!
What more can be said about this event? Another great weekend
of beautiful weather, amazing food and party, lots of laughter and
at the end of it all new champions crowned – the team of Lorie Mauro
& Debbie Warren.
Kelly Lattimer & Nancy Sayfy enjoy the
Partner’s Challenge Party
One final highlight of the year was Beach Grove’s performance in the
Golf BC Zone 3-4 Business Women’s League. The Beach Grove team
won 2 of our 4 team matches and finished 6 th in the overall Zone
standings. But we saved our best for last. At the year end Zone 3-4
Business Women’s tournament Beach Grove won the prestigious
Team of the Day honors when our pre-selected team of 4 players
(Nancy Girling, Merle Duffy, Margit Schroder and Julie Lyman) turned
in the lowest cumulative net score of the field – a combined 6 over
par. Well done ladies!
played at Beach Grove on a Saturday or Sunday can
be counted. You can play your round any time of
day, from any set of tees.
The cost to enter is $5 for the Front 9 competition
or $10 for the 18-hole competition.
Please contact Dyann Russell or Barb Trerise to register.
It was great to see such a strong turnout for our closing breakfast, awards and meeting – just unfortunate
that Mother Nature didn’t co-operate and washed away any hope of holding our closing day tournament. It’s
been an interesting year with a lot of changes within our Club and particularly within the Women’s section.
We’re fortunate to have such an active group of women golfers at Beach Grove and hopefully we can continue
to attract new members to both our Tuesday and Business sections and continue to increase participation
in all of our women’s tournaments and events.
2012 SENIORS’ LEAGUE INTERCLUB
By Bryon Wellar
This year Beach Grove did very well in the round robin
matches against the other clubs. We finished in first place,
2.5 points ahead of Richmond.
Unfortunately in the Wind-up Tournament, Richmond
played well and earned enough points to overtake us and
claim the trophy.
The wrap-up dinner and tournament at Quilchena was
blessed with dry weather. We had a great turn out and fun
was had by all.
Remember to sign up for next year! Applications will be
available in the Pro Shop and Locker Room early in 2013.
Have a safe and happy holiday season and we look forward
to seeing you next year!
GENERAL MANAGER’S MUSINGS
By Gord Sarkissian
What could possibly be more exciting than bagging a Hole-In-One at your favorite Golf
Club? How about getting another one a mere three months later! That’s exactly what
Club President Larry Wobick did this year. In fact, Larry scored two of the nineteen recorded
at the Club during the 2012 golf season. Not bad for a fellow who registered
around 140 games in the last year.
As a Club, your favorite target was hole #7 where 9 aces occurred followed by holes #4 and #13 where 3 each
were recorded. Lastly, the 2nd hole saw two Holes-In-One in 2012. Generally speaking, the odds makers give
the average golfer a 1 in 12,000 chance of scoring a Hole-In-One.
The Club was proud to host the South
Delta Rams Football organization as
they gathered for their annual fundraiser
and pub night. Rams President,
and Beach Grove Member, Tim
Brumby proudly wore the green and
gold as he and the other guests
danced the night away while raising a
nice bit of funding for this exceptional
community football program. Not so
many years ago, Past President Frank
Tarling led this group to many victories
both on and off the field. Our Staff
really enjoyed hosting this group.
SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT
by Ian Murray
At the time of writing I have to state that from feedback and observations the course
playing conditions have remained very good for this time of season and considering that
we received 9.15 inches of rainfall from October 13th to November 1st. There is no doubt
that keeping our course dry through late summer has extended better than normal conditions
through early fall. Our Maintenance Team is well into the daily routine and challenge
of cleaning-up the course with blowers, leaf mulching, raking, sweeping, removing
branches, chipping, cleaning-out beds, checking and cleaning drains, stump clean-up, top-dressing traffic areas,
and of course mowing all the turf! Staff have also spent two days winterizing the irrigation systems at
the clubhouse, maintenance facility, and golf course. This is a delicate procedure as the system is pressurized
with compressed air to remove the water from the lines, valves, and sprinkler heads.
With the sudden transition to fall please be aware that areas on the course may become slippery under foot
particularly concentrated traffic areas around the tees and greens. To avoid having an accident, always use
stair cases where provided, avoid walking on steep slopes, walk on your toes (not flat-foot) when walking
downhill, and be certain that your foot-wear is suitable and in good condition. Should you notice any areas
becoming slippery please report this to us so we can address the situation in a timely manner.
For protection of the golf course we have initiated our winter preparations to help reduce the accumulated
impact of steady play through the off-season; a time of significantly reduced growth and recovery of turf areas.
We ask that you please do your part by always observing the posted notifications, on-course signage,
roping of problem areas, and by using your best judgment in the interest of not causing any undue damage.
The alternate greens are being maintained ready for use at any time when conditions warrant the protection
of the regular greens mainly excessive moisture, soft surface conditions, frost, frozen ground, or severe disease
pressure.
We would like to welcome Wesley Schulz to our Maintenance Team. With a background in landscape maintenance
and management and education in Horticulture and Arboriculture Wesley is applying his skills and
knowledge while learning the fine art of golf course maintenance practices. Wesley has filled a position vacated
by Spencer Vandenbos who recently accepted another opportunity closer to home while he continues
his studies to pursue his goal of becoming a Firefighter. Thank you Spencer for your contributions over the
past years and we wish you all the best with your future endeavors.
On Saturday, November 3rd our Club is hosting the 6 th annual Hannah’s Heroes
Fall Fundraiser dinner, dance, and auctions event where 100% of the
proceeds go directly to the foundation and help support the BC Child and
Family Research Institute to help find a cure for Pediatric Brain Cancer. Our
local Tsawwassen girl was only 4 years old when she was diagnosed with inoperable
brain cancer and passed away the following year on October 31 st .
Her Mother Cathy passed away a year later from cancer at the young age of 40. In the past few years new
and very promising developments have been discovered by the extremely dedicated and hard working research
team. We would like to recognize the tireless efforts of Staff member Nichole Windblad for her continued
work as the Hannah’s Heroes Event Coordinator. Nichole, a former neighbor of the Hatlen Family
commits a tremendous amount of time and energy towards this cause. Way to go Nichole! For more information
Andy Hajer Named PGA of BC Junior Leader of the Year
What a great year for Andy! He got married, won the Pro-Am and now Andy
has been named the Lower Mainland’s Junior Leader of the Year by the Professional
Golf Association of BC. This award recognizes Golf Professionals who
are leaders in junior golf and who reflect the ideals of those who work with
youth.
Andy came to Beach Grove Golf Club five years ago and began working with
junior golfers immediately upon joining the club. Working with a wonderful
group of volunteers and other golf professionals, Andy has helped build
one of the best and most active Junior Programs in the Province. This
year more than 300 golfers as young as four participated in the various
programs generating significant revenue for the club, but more importantly
instilling a lifelong love for the game of golf.
Now that Andy has been recognized as the regional winner of this
award, he will be considered for the BCPGA Provincial Leader of the
Year in mid November. Congratulations, Andy, for this very well deserved
recognition!
SAY HELLO TO OUR NEW CATERING & EVENTS MANAGER—APRIL!
Hello Beach Grove Club Members, I am happy to introduce myself
as your new Catering and Events Manager. You have a beautiful facility
and great community here. I look forward to working with you
for special events and getting to know you all around the clubhouse.
I have grown up in Ladner and been a part of the Tsawwassen community
for years. I attended high school at South Delta Secondaryand
was raised in the Tsawwassen Alliance Church. I am excited to see a lot of familiar faces here already.
I come from a back ground of over 10 years in hospitality. It has taken me many to exciting places such as BC
Ferries, Marriott Hotels, and Hilton Hotels. Although the fast paced life downtown Vancouver drew many
thrilling stories, I am happy to now work amongst neighbors and long term members of the community I call
my home.
Please feel free to call me anytime if you have
questions or inquiries. I look forward to the opportunity
to meet you all in the coming months.
Sincerely,
April Gladman
