MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB CAPTAINBy Bill CarcaryI would like to announce that Jim Froese has accepted theposition of Vice Captain. Jim is a longtime member of BeachGrove, an avid golfer, and will bring a lot of insight andknowledge to our various committees. Welcome Jim! I lookforward to working with him on all the golfing activities atBeach Grove.Jim Froese, Vice CaptainBy the time you read this we will have reverted to ”Summer Rules”. The course is recovering nicely from ourmaintenance work and it’s time to play the ball down. A thank you to Ian and his crew for getting the coursein great shape.Unfortunately our home and home inter‐club with Gorge Vale had to be cancelled this year due to a lack ofplayers on our part. Gorge Vale had 30 players signed up to come here, but we could only come up with 18.This has been a long standing event in the club schedule, and the Match committee will be looking to see if itcontinues in the future. For our first Corporate Night on May 30, we have a new sponsor in “Cambie Surgery”. Welcome, and thankyou for your support. The regular Men’s nights will continue on most Wednesdays in June, followed by a CorporateNight on June 27 sponsored by Unitech Construction Management. As the weather hopefully starts to improve, and Ian and his crew continue to makeBeach Grove a course to be proud of, we allneed to do our part to help. As we learnedin school about the 3 R’s, lets apply that tothe golf course. Remember to Replace/Repair divots, Rake traps & Repair ballmarks, and make the golf experience betterfor everyone. Good golfing.NEW MEMBERSWe would like to extend a very warmwelcome to the following New Members:Ms. Janet Cruickshank (Associate)Mr. Caleb Lawrence (Full Play)Mrs. Teresa Dwayne (Associate)Mrs. Lois Nelson (Associate)Welcome to the Club!#2

BUSINESS WOMEN’S SECTIONBy Deb MitchellI can’t believe May is in the books andthe longest day of the year is justaround the corner. We kicked off themonth with Pin Round #2. Congratulationsto winner Jan MacDonald whoshot a fantastic net 70. Great workJan!We were fortunate to get beautiful weather for this year’sBusiness vs. Tuesday tournament on May 6 th . It was greatto see so many ladies out – 42 in all – for this Beach Grovetradition that allows us to renew friendships and build new ones amongst the women members of the Club.As the groups came in and the scores went up on the board the lead bounced back and forth between Tuesdayand Business, until it was all square with only the final group left. We anxiously awaited the outcome ofthe last match. Happily (for us), the team of Pam Langham and Ev Pickering prevailed and the BusinessWomen secured the coveted Beach Grove crowns as this year’s champions. A huge thank‐you to NancyGirling who did most of the heavy lifting in organizing the logistics for this year’s event and to Brad, Dawn,Alysha and the food & beverage team who prepared a delicious Chinese buffet for us. GENERAL MANAGER’S MUSINGSBy Gord SarkissianA many of you have noted the Club has embarked on the new age of awareness andfeedback with the monthly issuance of our Two Question Surveys. The brainchild of ourCommunications Committee, these surveys are designed to give, and to get, instantfeedback to questions and issues that are current and relevant to the club. This pastmonth we asked how you felt about the pro shop announcing your name at your specifictee time. Over 80% of the 365 members who responded felt that this was a good service to provide.Based on this information we intend to continue with this service at the times that we do not have a starteron the tee. Please watch for more of these monthly questions. If you have a question you feel would be valuableto ask the membership please forward it to the Committees’ attention for consideration..The month of May at the Club saw some wonderful events. One of my favoriteswas our new member reception and orientation. New members were invited tomeet club personnel in the various areas of the clubhouse and maintenance facilityfor a visit and some information on the area they were visiting. Of course we hadrefreshments at each station. Over 35 new members and their families participatedalong with our dedicated Board and committee members. It was a fun andinformative evening hosted by our staff. Thanks to all that came out. The club ishosting a similar event in June on the 21 st . We will be entertaining your guests andprospective members throughout the club and facilities. The start time is 6:30 pm.Please give some thought to who in your circle might enjoy a tour of the facilitieswith fun and delicious refreshments along the way. There is no charge and certainlyno hard sell tactics towards your guests. Our goal is to introduce and welcomeyour friends, colleagues and associates to our community. Please callHeather Willis at 604 943 1155 to confirm your attendance.New Members Mickie andBrian McCune tour withCourse SuperintendentIan MurrayThe Food and Beverage Department bid a fond farewell to Chef Dawn Alexander on May 26 th . Chef Dawn hasrelocated to Calgary to be closer to her family. We thank Dawn for her two years of service to the membershipand wish her success with the move and her future endeavors. The Club will be searching for a suitablereplacement over the weeks ahead.Over the coming weeks and months the club will be hosting a multitude of outside events from weddings totournaments and more. Some of these events will force the closure of the dining room and banquet areas. The Library (yes no books in sight) will remain open for your dining pleasure. Please know that we appreciateyour patience and support as we strive to generate new member interest and revenue on your behalfthrough these events. If there are events inyour life that could utilize the services of theclub culinary team and our facilities pleasecall our catering manager Alysha Tucker toassist you in the organization.Beach Grove Ladies … ready for the Golf Shop’s Annual Mystery Tour! The month of June often brings some of thewarmest and longest days of the year. SUPERINTENDENTS REPORTBy Ian MurrayThe two weeks of warm, sunny weather that started the second week of May was a welcomechange for all and excellent timing for our aeration programs. With the perfectweather, the aeration, sanding and inter‐seeding programs were completed without interruptionor change and with outstanding results. A special thanks to our Staff for alltheir hard work and diligence during the 3 day closure. All things considered the courselooked fantastic when we reopened for play on Thursday morning; it was all the detailwork that really made the difference. We have started an eradication program to control patches of silvery thread moss and procumbent pearlwortthat have far exceeded threshold levels in select greens and tee decks. We are anticipating good results withthis program however we may have to help a few of these areas fill‐in by way of over‐seeding. If required thiswill be performed neatly and should not interfere with play.USGA Director Larry Gilhuly is scheduled to visit our Club the afternoon of June 12 th . This consultation willinclude an inspection of the course property, a review of maintenance standards, operations and procedures, available recourses and a follow‐up report. We have utilized the expertise of the USGA Green Section Staffsince 1985 (Dick White was Greens Chairperson and the new 16 th hole was open for play after construction)and the last visit and consultation was in 2008. Larry is a favored speaker at many of the Golf Industry conferencesand has authored numerous articles that can be found on the USGA website. www.usga.orgThe left‐side staging area of our 2 nd tee is deplorable to say the least and pending approval we will be lookingat undertaking a simple, cost effective renovation to tidy‐up this area. We will be presenting and discussingour plan at the next Golf Course Committee Meeting.Members Adopt‐a‐Hole ProgramYour assistance is required! The Golf Course Committeehas reinitiated a program to enhance the overallplayability and appearance of your golf course by assigningMembers with select holes to take extra careand attention of; similar idea to the Adopt‐a‐Streetprogram that is now in many communities. The expectationis for Members to repair ball marks and fill orreplace divots on fairways and tee decks on the holesindicated on the chart below based alphabetically bythe first letter of your surname. We hope this will becomecontagious and possibly a little friendly competitionfor “best maintained hole / holes” Our JuniorMembers will be looking after the 12 th hole; typicallythe heaviest for fairway divots! Have fun with this andwe certainly do appreciate the extra effort to help improveour standards and also for the consideration ofplayers following behind you.1 st A, B 10 th L2 nd C 11 th M,N3 rd D 12 th Junior Players4 th E 13 th O5 th F 14 th P,Q6 th G 15 th R,S7 th H,I 16 th R,S8 th H,I 17 th T,U,V9 th J,K 18 th W,Y,Z#9

From Your Handicap CommitteeContrary to urban legend, you don’t need to keep score or maintain a handicap. At least, not unless you wantto play in club events or work on your game and monitor your progress. Even if your goal is to play fun eventswith friends and family, a handicap is one of golf’s unique benefits that enables golfers of different levels tohave a meaningful measure of who played their best game that day.But there is a price to pay for this benefit: you need to keep score of every game, home or away, and post itpromptly. “Away” includes games played during the winter if the course is playing an active season. Belongingto a Club provides you with access to knowledgeable golf professionals that can assist you in recordingyour handicap, whether it’s an issue with rules or with the computer.Golf is a game of honor. Handicaps are an all or nothing decision: every game, according to the rules of golf orno handicap. Any Club event that requires a handicap must be played with a valid up to date one in fairness toyour fellow players.Tuum est. (It’s up to you.)Rule of the Month: Addressing the BallOne of the principal changes introduced as of January 1, 2012 is the amending of the Definition for addressingthe ball. A player has addressed the ball simply by grounding his club immediately in front of or behind theball, regardless of whether or not he has taken his stance.Keep in mind that this definition refers to a ball that is in play. A ball is in play when the player has made astroke on the teeing ground. What if you have teed up your ball, you rest your club on the ground behind yourball and your ball falls off the tee? It is not in play because you have not made your stroke yet.Handicap Committee:Mary Adams Chair Bill McDonald Men’s Section RepresentativeBill Carcary Club Captain Cathy Savard Women’s Division Rules/Handicap ChairBrent DerrheimHead ProfessionalBeach Grove Junior Member ScholarshipThanks to the support of The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen and the sponsorship of several clubmembers, the junior program is offering a $1,000 award to a junior member entering postsecondary education. The Beach Grove Junior Entrance Award will be available annually, andwill be a great acknowledgment to the hard work of the winner as well as encourage thegrowth and health of our junior program.Deadline for juniors to apply for this scholarship is June 15, 2012.To learn more about the scholarship or the junior program please visit the junior section ofthe Beach Grove Golf Club web page.#10
