Going back to Georgia 

For the first time since 1994, Union 

is heading to the state of Georgia for 

a game. Since football was reinstated 

in 1984, the Bulldogs are 0-2 in 

games in Georgia. In 1987, Union 

lost 41-7 at Georgia Southwestern, 

and in 1994, Union lost 38-7 at West 

Georgia. 

Overall, Union is 2-2 versus 

schools from Georgia. The Bulldogs 

beat Georgia Southwestern 23-7 in 

1998 and Shorter 25-16 in 2005. 

Both of Union’s wins were at Burch/ 

Nau Field.

Struggling to convert turnovers into points 

The Union defense has done well in 

causing turnovers as opponents have 

turned the ball over 10 times during 

the first three games. Yet Union has 

turned the ball over 14 times. 

Union has had issues cashing those 

turnovers into points. The Bulldogs 

have turned the opponents’ 10 

miscues into just 26 points, while the 

opponents have scored 41 points off 

vs.

season, scoring 10 times. Union’s 

opponents have also entered the red 

zone 19 times, but have scored 14 

times. 

However, Union has only scored 57 

points while its opponents has tallied 

96 points. The difference is that 3 of 

Union’s red-zone scores have been 

field goals with opponents racking up 

14 TDs (2 of the PATs were no good). 

In last week’s 34-12 loss at 

Pikeville, Union struggled in the red 

zone in going 1 for 3. The Bulldogs 

fumbled the ball away twice deep in 

the opponent’s territory. Pikeville, 

meanwhile, went 3 for 4 in the red 

zone, scoring 3 TDs and having one 

pass picked off to end a drive.

Waters aiming for passing record 

QB Joey Waters (5-11, 207, SR) 

continues his assault on the Bulldog 

record. 

Through the first four games of the 

season, Waters has completed 93-of- 

151 passes for 1,065 yards and 11 

touchdowns. After throwing for 260 

yards last week, Waters moved into 

second on the all-time passing yardage 

list with 5,729 and is just 787 

yards away from overtaking Worley 

for the top spot. 

Waters is also 5 completions and 

98 attempts away from those career 

records. Niece owns both marks at 

496 completions and 977 attempts. 

Waters holds the program record for 

touchdown passes in a season (21) 

and touchdown passes in a career 

(50). 

Callahan, Kelly on pace to history 

As targets for Waters, WR Kyle 

Callahan (6-0, 197, JR) and WR 

Shawn Kelly (5-8, 175, SR) are on 

pace to break some single-season 

receiving and career records. 

With 27 receptions, Callahan is 

averaging 6.75 catches per game. 

At the current rate, he could haul in 

approximately 75 passes and surpass 

the school record of 65 receptions

MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK 

Allen Ervin (Lambuth/Offensive), Travis Norris (Pikeville/Defensive) and Julian Tyler (Bethel/Special Teams) have been 

named this week’s Mid-South Conference Players of the Week in football. 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Lambuth running back Allen Ervin is the MSC Offensive Player of the Week. The 6’0, 220 lb. senior from Memphis, 

Tennessee averaged 8.2 yards per carry in Saturday’s 39-28 victory over Cumberland University. Ervin fi nished the day 

with 229 yards on 28 carries and two scores, including an 80 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter which put the game 

away for the Eagles. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

The MSC Defensive Player of the Week is Travis Norris from Pikeville College. Norris, a 6’3, 315 lb. defensive tackle 

from Union, South Carolina, was the defensive leader for the Bears in their 34-12 victory over Union College. He recorded 

fi ve solo tackles (seven total) and two sacks (costing Union 23 yards). Norris also had a fumble recovery, forced 

another, and blocked a kick. 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Julian Tyler of Bethel College is this week’s MSC Special Teams Player of the Week. The 5’9, 175 lb. sophomore from 

Jacksonville, Florida made the most of his two kick off returns, scoring touchdowns on both (a fi rst for Bethel football) in 

Bethel’s 49-20 win over homestanding Belhaven College. Tyler’s returns of 85 and 76 yards were the second and third 

largest, respectively, in Bethel College history. Tyler also caught three passes for 65 yards and an additional touchdown.

Kelly now ranks 8th on the all-time 

career receptions list. To date, he has 

88 career receptions for 1,037 yards, 



a 11.8 yard-per-reception average and 

8 TDs. Kelly is 4 receptions away 

from tying Mike Jones for 7th alltime 

and 12 away from becoming the 

4th place in program history to amass 

100 career receptions. With his 53 

yards receiving last week at Pikeville, 

Kelly became the 12th play to 

amass 1,000 career receiving yards. 

On the year, Kelly has 21 catches 

for 295 yards and 3 TDs. Kelly’s best 

season to date came during the 2005 

season when he hauled in 31 passes 

for 398 yards and 4 TDs. 

O’Neal tackles record 

LB Patrick O’Neal (6-1, 215, SR) 

has led Union in tackles in all three 

seasons he’s played, and he’s continued 

that theme during the first three 

games of the year. He already has 55 

total tackles, racking up school-record 

20 in the season opener against 

University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 

In nine games last season, O’Neal 

recorded 102 tackles and ranked third 

in the Mid-South and sixth in the 

NAIA with 11.3 tackles per game. 

With his 102 tackles in 2006, 

O’Neal became the first players since 

Herman Lovett in 2002 to record 100 

or more tackles in a season. Lovette 

had 101 total tackles in 2002. 

For his career, O’Neal has 302 total 

tackles. John Luttrell holds the season 

and career tackle records at 135 

and 392, respectively. If O’Neal is to 

break the career record, he will need 

to bag 91 more tackles - which would 

break the season mark. 

Running toward history 

RB Terence Pollock (5-9, 214, SO) 

had arguably the best rushing season 

for a freshman in program history as 

his 655 yards on the ground rank him 

11th for most yards in a season. After 

rushing for 195 yards during his first 

two games of the season, he is 150 

yards away from becoming just the 

ninth player in Bulldog program his-

He ran for 127 yards on 23 carries 

with a long of 19 yards. On the season, 

he has 195 yards on 61 carries,

yards per game. Pollock became the 

first player since Scotty Russell in 

1994 to rush for 100 or more yards in 

three consecutive games in 2006. He 

galloped for 158 at Belhaven (Miss.) 

on Oct. 7, 2006; 131 yards at Lambuth 

(Tenn.) on Oct. 14, 2006; and 

127 yards against Frostburg State on 

Oct. 21, 2006.

CORBIN, Ky. - A trio of Bulldogs netted milestones in Union 

College’s season opener; however, it was the Patriots of University 

of the Cumberlands (Ky.) that were celebrating as Cumberlands 

pulled out the 24-19 decision Saturday to hang on to the Brass 

Lantern at Campbell Field in Corbin, Ky. 

Senior linebacker Patrick O’Neal (Lula, Ga.) tied the school record 

for tackles in a game with 20, equaling the mark set by John Fey 

which was set back in 1997. Sophomore defensive back Ty Harris 

(Monroe, Ga.) picked off three passes to equal the school record. 

Harris has now twice accomplished the feat and joins Lavarus 

McCloud and C.J. Westerman as the only ones to achieve the milestone. 

Senior quarterback Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) became 

the fi rst player in school history to amass 40-plus touchdown passes 

as he now stands alone in that category with 41. 

But it went all for naught as Cumberlands was able to hold strong 

and pull out the fi ve-point win to keep the Brass Lantern for the 

second year in a row. 

The contest was also a Mid-South Conference East showdown 

as Cumberlands improved to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in MSC East play. 

Union dropped to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. 

Although Union won the turnover battle as Cumberlands coughed 

it up four times to Union’s two, the last Bulldog miscue ultimately 

proved costly. 

Down 17-13 with just over four minutes to play, Brian Abshire 

picked off a Waters pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown to 

give Cumberlands a 24-13 cushion with 3:58 to play. 

Not ready to give up, Union covered 60 yards in four plays to cut 

into the defi cit. Waters hooked up with Kyle Callahan (Covington, 

Ky.) for a 33-yard touchdown pass, making it 24-19 with 2:58 

remaining. The Bulldogs went for two but Waters was stopped just 

short of the goal line. 

Union, though, would not get a chance to take the lead. Cumberlands 

took the ensuring possession and ran out the clock. A Kyle 

King 24-yard run sealed the victory as it put the ball on the Union 8 

with just over a minute left with one timeout left for Union. 

Cumberlands outgained Union 323-312 in total offense with 248 

yards coming on the ground. King led Cumberlands with 92 yards 

and two scores on 25 carries. Bob Evans ran for 61 yards on fi ve 

carries. King also completed 5-of-15 passes for 75 yards. 

Waters tossed 24-of-39 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns. 

Callahan hauled in seven passes for 70 yards and two 

scores, while Chris Collopy (Manchester, Ky.) pulled down six for 47 

yards. Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) had four catches for 71 yards. 

Union rushed for 63 yards with Lee Miles (Ross, Ohio) leading the 

way with 52.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Christening its new synthetic turf fi eld, 

Union College covered the fi eld numerous times Saturday. However, 

it was visiting Lambuth (Tenn.) University that left happy as it 

outlasted Union 48-44. 

A common belief is that play is faster on synthetic turf rather than 

grass. And it sure appeared to be the case at Burch/Nau Field as 

Union and Lambuth combined for 800 yards in total offense as well 

as 440 kickoff return yardage. 

The Eagles (1-1 overall) racked up 451 yards in total offense with 

244 coming on the ground and 207 through the air. Meanwhile, the 

Bulldogs (0-2 overall) compiled 349 yards in total offense with 335 

coming through the air and just 14 rushing. 

Senior quarterback Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) had a fi eld 

day as he completed 26-of-35 passes for 335 yards and four touchdowns. 

More importantly, he had no interceptions. 

Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) had a big day as he hauled in seven 

passes for 139 yards and two scores. Kyle Callahan (Covington, 

Ky.) pulled down a team-high eight catches for 79 yards, while 

Rolondo Dyer (Lawrenceburg, Ga.) had three receptions for 51 

yards and a touchdown. 

Running back Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) led the Bulldog 

ground attack with 43 yards on 20 carries as he also caught three 

passes for 27 yards and a score. 

Both teams came out fi ring on all cylinders. The two squads 

combined for 28 fi rst-quarter points and Lambuth held a 34-30 edge 

at the half. 

The Bulldogs took the opening possession of the second half 

and drove the ball 57 yards on eight plays to take the lead. Waters 

capped the drive with a nine-yard bootleg run, making it 37-34 with 

11:30 to play in the third. 

With 7:45 to go in the third, Kevin Haynes scored his third touchdown 

of the game on a three-yard run, capping a nine-play, 65-yard 

march by the Eagles. Following Chris McGinn’s PAT, Lambuth led 

41-37. 

Union reclaimed the lead just before time expired in the third. 

With three seconds remaining, Waters hooked up with Pollock on 

a screen play that covered 15 yards for the score, giving Union a 

44-41 lead. 

But on the ensuing kickoff, Allen Ervin returned the ball 50 yards 

to the Union 38 to give the Eagles a short fi eld to work with. Eight 

plays later, Mark Kelley hit Clint Anderson in the back of the end 

zone for a four-yard scoring strike as Lambuth claimed a 48-44 lead 

with 10:53 to play.

GAME 3 - MALONE

CANTON, Ohio - Malone (Ohio) College reeled off 27 fi rst-quarter 

points as it defeated visiting Union College 55-21 Saturday at 

Fawcett Stadium. 

The Pioneers (2-1 overall) jumped out to a 20-0 lead before the 

Bulldogs (0-3 overall) cracked the scoring column. Malone tacked 

on Derek Deardorff 14-yard touchdown reception in the second as it 

took a 34-7 cushion into the half. 

Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) hit Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.) 

for 10-yard touchdown pass at the 13:12 mark in the third, cutting 

the margin to 34-14. However, Malone scored twice in the period to 

stretch the margin to 48-14. 

Waters hit Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) for a 5-yard scoring strike 

in the fourth for the Bulldogs’ fi nal tally. But it was too little, too late 

as Malone recorded the 55-21 victory. 

Malone outgained Union 479-247 in total offense. Malone racked 

up 362 yards through the air and 117 on the ground, while Union 

had 240 yards passing and only seven yards rushing. 

Waters completed 20-of-34 passes for 221 yards and three scores 

while having three passes picked off. Callahan pulled down six 

passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.

GAME 4 - PIKEVILLE

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - Senior Joey Waters reached a couple more 

milestones, and sophomore Terence Pollock recorded over 100 

yards rushing, but it wasn’t enough as host Pikeville (Ky.) College 

handed Union College a 34-12 Mid-South Conference East defeat 

Saturday. 

The loss extended the Bulldogs’ losing skid to 10 games as they 

are now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in MSC East play, while the Bears 

improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. 

Waters (McDonough, Ga.) completed 23-of-43 passes for 260 

yards and two touchdowns, making him the fi rst player in program 

history with 50 career scoring tosses. Also, he moved into second 

place on the all-time passing list with 5,729 career passing yards, 

overtaking Stanley Niece who amassed 5,524 passing yards. Waters 

needs 787 more yards to become the all-time leading passer. 

Lee Worley sits atop the list with 6,515 passing yards. 

Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) had his best day rushing the ball this 

season as he galloped for 127 yards on 23 carries. 

However, it wasn’t enough as Pikeville’s defense bent but didn’t 

break in posting the 22-point decision. 

Union amassed more fi rst downs than Pikeville with a 24-19 edge. 

And the Bears only outgained the Bulldogs 383-372 in total offense. 

Still, Union was unable to put points on the board in large part due 

to turnovers. 

The Bulldogs fumbled the ball away three times and had two 

passes intercepted. Add to that the fact Union turned the ball over 

on downs twice, it resulted in a rough night offensively. 

Union scored fi rst when Waters hit Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.) 

on a 10-yard scoring play. The PAT was blocked, leaving it 6-0 with 

7:46 to go in the fi rst. 

Pikeville’s begin clicking in the second as it posted two scores to 

take a 14-6 lead into the half. Dan Wideman hit Demarc Anderson 

for two 16-yard scoring passes - the second one coming with 

14 seconds to play in the second, to lift the Bears to the 14-6 

advantage. 

After a scoreless third quarter, Wideman found De’Von Joseph 

for a 22-yard strike to make it 21-6 with 9:53 to play. De’Rail Sims 

scored on a 1-yard plunge to extend the Bears’ lead to 28-6 at the 

6:32 mark. 

The Bulldogs continued to show some fi ght as they covered 60 

yards in four plays for their next score. Waters hit Rolondo Dyer 

(Lawrenceburg, Ga.) for a 40-yard scoring play to pull Union within 

28-12 with 5:42 remaining. Once again, the PAT was blocked. 

Pikeville sealed the victory when Brando Richards returned an 

interception 48 yards for a touchdown with 52 seconds to play. The 

two-point conversion was no good, making the fi nal 34-12. 

Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) hauled in eight catches for 79 yards, 

while Callahan pulled in six for 53 yards and a score. 

For Pikeville, Wideman completed 15-of-29 passes for 140 yards 

and three scores while rushing for 146 yards on 20 carries.
