UC Bulldogs
(0-1, 0-0 MSC West)
First Time for Everything
Union is taking on Kentucky Christian
for the first time ever. This is the Knights
second full season as a varsity program.
In its last 10 game in which it played
an opponent for the first time, Union is
2-8. However, four were against NCAA
Division I teams and one was a NCAA
Division III.
The two victories were against Shorter
(Ga.) in a 25-16 affair in 2005 and
Faulkner (Ala.) in a 23-13 contest in 2008.
Both Shorter and Faulkner are on Union’s
2010 schedule.
Looking to Return to Winning Ways
The Bulldogs are on a bit of losing skid,
having dropped their last 4 in a row, dating
back to last season.
The last time Union lost 4 or more
games in a row occurred during the
2006 & 2007 seasons when it lost 11
consecutive. Union lost the final 6 games
of the 2006 campaign and opened the 2007
season with 5 losses. 2007 was also that
last time Union opened the year 0-2.
Pollock: UC’s All-Time Leading Rusher
RB Terence Pollock (SR, 5-10, 235)
became the program’s all-time leading
rusher when ran for 163 yards on 26
carriers to put at 2,972 career yards,
surpassing Scott Russell (2,854 rushing
vs.
Kentucky Christian
(0-2, 0-1 MSC East)
yards) and Clarence Mackey (2,822
rushing yards) on the all-time rushing list
He already set the career program for
most rushing attempts as he now has 615
carries, which supplants Russell’s mark of
570.
Pollock has one more career rushing
records in his sights - the rushing TD
record. With his TD in the season opener,
Pollock has 25 career rushing TDs and
trails only Mackey, who tallied 28 rushing
scores.
Pollock: UC’s Century Man
RB Terence Pollock (SR, 5-10, 235)
notched his 13th career 100-yard rushing
game in the season-opening loss to
Campbellsville (Ky.) on Sept. 4, 2010. He
ran for 163 yards and a TD on 26 carries.
The 163 yards are the 3rd most in
Pollock’s career. He ran for 198 against
Faulkner (Ala.) on Sept. 20, 2008, and
169 versus UVa-Wise on Nov. 1, 2008.
However, the 169 is the most he has ever
rushed for at Burch/Nau Field since his top
2 rushing games were on the road.
Pollock recorded 6 100-yard games in
2008. He ended the 2008 regular season
Home Sweet Home?
The Bulldogs went 3-1 last season at
Burch/Nau Field but have now lost their
last 2 home games.
Since installing the synthetic sports turf
in 2007, Union is 11-5 at Burch/Nau Field
and had a 6-game, home winning streak.
The last time Union went undefeated at
home during a season came in 1994 when
it went 5-0. The Bulldog still have a shot at
matching the 5 home wins in a season with
5 home dates remaining.
MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Belhaven University’s Billy Hammer and Alex Williams and Campbellsville University junior David
Hon are the Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week for the week ending Sept. 4.
Road Not Kind To Bulldogs
Union was road weary in 2009 as the
Bulldogs went 1-5 away from Burch/Nau
Field with the lone victory being a 21-6
decision at Pikeville.
Of the total 257 points Union gave up
last season, 188 was on the road with
opponents outscoring the Bulldogs 188-
128.
Making History Upfront
OL Quintin Borders (SR, 6-6, 320)
made conference history last season as
he became the first OL to be named the
MSC East Offensive Player of the Year.
In addition, he became the sixth player
in program history to make the All-
Conference First Team three times in a
career.
The accolades didn’t stop there for
Borders. He became the fourth NAIA First
Team All-American in program history
when he landed on the 2009 AFCA NAIA
Coaches’ All-America Team.
Brinkley Piling Up the Numbers
QB Mike Brinkley (JR, 6-0, 185) has
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Williams completed 31-of-42 passes, including a pair of touchdown tosses to earn MSC Offensive
Player of the Week. The Covington, La., sophomore, marched the Blazers to the game-winning
touchdown going 6-for-6 on the drive en route to the win over Louisiana. In addition to his stellar
passing numbers, Williams also led the team with 73 yards rushing.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hammer, a Katy, Texas, native, recorded three solo and 10 assisted tackles and scored a
touchdown to earn the MSC Defensive Player of the Week. The sophomore linebacker helped
the Blazers to a 41-34 win over visiting Louisiana College by forcing a third quarter fumble and
scampering 21 yards for the touchdown.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hon hit all six of his PATs and connected on a 23-yard fi eld goal to earn MSC Special Teams
Player of the Week. The Orange Park, Fla., kicker/punter, also pinned Union on the 3-yard line
after a 39-yard punt in the Tigers’ 47-36 win. Hon averaged 36.7 yards per punt for the game.
only made 23 career starts, but he is fast
approaching some career milestones.
With his 198 passing yards on Sept.
4, 2010, Brinkley became the 4th player
in program history to pass for more than
5,000 yards in a career as he now has
5,090. Additionally, he is second all-time
with 58 TD passes, putting him 8 behind
Joey Water’s mark of 66.
Last season, he posted the fifth-best
passing season in program history in
completing 162-of-301 passes for 2,281
yards and 24 TDs with 9 INTs. He owns
the second-best passing season as well. In
2008, he completed 56.0% (192 of 343) of
his passes for 2,611 yards.
Brinkley also joins Waters as the only
players to throw for more than 20 TDs in a
season as both have done so twice. Waters
tossed 21 TD passes in 2005 and 27 in
2007.
Only having played in 23 collegiate
games, Brinkley has thrown 3 or more TD
passes in a game 12 times now. Also, he
has had at least 1 TD pass in 21 of the 23
games he’s played in.
On Oct. 18, 2008, Brinkley tied a 22-
year-old record with 5 TD passes in the 42-
24 win over Pikeville (Ky.). Greg Duncum
first accomplished the feat in a game
versus Lambuth (Tenn.) in 1986. Brinkley
repeated the feat on Oct. 24, 2009, when he
With the 21-6 win at Pikeville (Ky.)
on Oct. 17, 2009, head coach Tommy
Reid moved into second place on the alltime
wins list in program history. His 35
victories as he coached the Bulldogs from
1929-41 and posted a 46-33-12 record.
Ballard coached from 1988-93 and went
34-25-1 during his tenure.
Reid, who took over during the 2001
campaign, is 35-57 overall.
Bulldogs Posting The Points
The Bulldog offense picked up right
where it’s been the past 2 seasons with a
36-point outburst in the season-opening
loss to Campbellsville (Ky.) on Setp. 4,
2010.
The past 2 years saw Union post the
top and the 5th-best scoring seasons in
program history. In addition, the 2007
campaign saw the Bulldogs post the 7thmost
points in school history.
Union averaged 30.8 points in 2008
and 30.1 in 2009. The top point-per-game
average in program history came during
the 1994 season when the Bulldogs
in 10 games.
Red-Zone Issues?
What seemed like a given for Union in
2008 was a sticking point for the Bulldogs
in 2009. Since the season-opening game,
Union has struggled capitalizing on its redzone
chances.
In 2010, Union went 4-of-6 in the
red-zone in the season-opener, scoring 3
touchdowns and a field gold for a total of
22 points.
In 2009, the Bulldogs took care of
business every time they got in the red
zone in the 57-7 season-opening win on
Sept 5, 2009. Union went 5-for-5, scoring
TDs each time. But after that, it was not
until the final two games of the year that
21 Is Generally The Limit
When determining whether Union will
be victorious or not, 21 has been the magic
number. Under head coach Tommy Reid,
Union is 21-6 when holding an opponent
to 21 or fewer points. The last time Union
lost a game when limiting a team to 21
or fewer came on Sept. 24, 2009, when it
dropped a 21-15 decision at Georgetown
(Ky.). Prior to that, it had been since Nov.
11, 2006, when UVa-Wise posted a 21-6
Meanwhile, Union is 14-51 under Reid
when opponents score 22 or more points.
In the Bulldogs’ 4 wins duing the 2009
season, opponents scored a total of 19
points for a 4.75 PPG average.
In 2008, Union registered 6 wins when
INTs By Committee
The Bulldog defense has picked off 13
passes in 10 games in 2009. This is after
only intercepting 10 passes in 12 games in
2008.
Amazingly, 10 different players
have picked off passes this year for the
Bulldogs. Bert Brown (DB 5-9, 168) led
way with 3 INTs.
Converting Turnovers Into Points
Union dominated the turnover battle the
past 2 seasons, but the Bulldogs got off to a
rocky start in this regard in 2010. In the 47-
36 season-opening loss to Campbellsville
(Ky.) on Sept. 4, Union turned the ball
over 6 times (4 INTs, 2 fumbles) while
Campellsville had 3 turnovers (1 INT, 2
fumbles). The Bulldogs converted those
miscues into 13 points, while the Tigers
cashed in for 21 points.
In 2009, Union had 30 takeaways to the
opponents’ 17. Union garnered 111 points
off of those miscues, while the opponents
have tallied 61 points from the Bulldogs’
17 turnovers.
In 2008, Union won the turnover battles
as the Bulldogs have created 25 takeaways
and only had 20 giveaways. Also, Union
has been able to turn those takeaways in
to 72 points this season, while opponents
have only registered 56 points off of
Union’s miscues.
Controlling Momentum
On Sept., 4, 2010, The Bulldogs
stayed right with Campbellsville (Ky.)
scoring-wise in the first and third quarters.
However, the Tigers kept momentum going
in the second and fourth quarters to close
out the halves.
In the first and third quarters, Union was
only outscored 14-13. Yet in the second
and fourth quarters, Union was outscored
33-23.
This is opposite of what Union did
in 2009. Last season, Union outscored
opponents in the first (80-63), second
(77-72) and fourth (106-63) quarters but
struggled in the third as it was outscored
53-38.
Union owned the third quarter in 2008,
outscoring its opponents 107-48. But the
Bulldogs struggled in the third quarter
as opponents are outscoring them 53-38.
However, Union owned a 106-63 edge in
the fourth quarter.
By Air Or By Land - UC Getting It Done
By and large, Union has been a passoriented
team in recent years. However, the
Bulldogs have been a two-headed monster
in recent seasons.
The balanced attack continued to be the
theme in the season opener on Sept. 4,
2010, as the Bulldogs ran for 241 yards
and passed for another 248 for 489 yards in
total offense.
In 2009, Union tallied 3,778 yards in
total offense with 1,347 coming on the
ground and 2,431 through the air. This is
just a continuation of what the Bulldogs
accomplished in 2008 when Union tallied
4,354 total yards on offense with 2,611
through the air and 1,691 on the ground.
New Season, New Changes
Every new season brings forth new
changes. And the 2010 season is no
different.
While one of the more noticable changes
around Burch/Nau Field is the new, stateof-the-art
scoreboard which is 100 percent
digital with a LED message board, biggest
change is the Bulldogs moving divisions
within the Mid-South Conference.
Since the MSC had been split into the
divisions in 2005, Union had been in the
MSC East. That is no more as the Bulldogs
have been told to “Go west.”
Union and archrival Cumberlands (Ky.)
now join Belhaven (Miss.), Bethel (Tenn.),
Cumberland (Tenn.), Faulkner (Ala.) and
Shorter (Ga.) in the MSC West.
Kentucky Christian and football
newcomer Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) are in
the MSC East along with Campbellsville
(Ky.), Georgetown (Ky.), Pikeville (Ky.),
UVa-Wise and West Virginia Tech.
Lambuth (Tenn.) is no longer in the
MSC and now competes as an independent
in football.
It’d Been A While
When Union held West Virginia Tech
scoreless on Oct. 3, 2009, it marked the
first time since the 1993 season opener that
the Bulldogs shut out an opponent - a span
of 169 games.
Union opened the 1993 season with a
30-0 win over Tennessee Wesleyan.
The 31-0 win over West Virginia Tech
was just the 6th shutout in the modern era
of Bulldog football (since 1985). From
1905-41, Union recorded 45 shutouts to
give the Bulldogs 51 in their history.
In case you were wondering, the last
time Union posted back-to-back shutouts
came during the 1940 season when the
Bulldogs defeated Rio Grande (Ohio) 12-0
and tied Transylvania (Ky.) 0-0. The last
time Union had two shutouts in a season
was 1989 when it defeated Kentucky
Wesleyan 34-0 and Tennessee Wesleyan
20-0.
Recent OT History Not Kind To UC
Union has played in 6 overtime games
and is 2-4 in such contests.
The Bulldogs won their first 2 extended
period games, defeating Cumberland
(Ky.) College 24-23 in 1996 and Pikeville
(Ky.) College 17-16 in 2001. However,
since then, Union has lost its last 3
overtime games. In 2002, Union lost
32-29 to NCAA Division II Concord
(W.Va.) College. The Bulldogs lost 9-3 at
Campbellsville (Ky.) University in 2003.
Union’s last overtime game was in 2004
when it fell 32-25 to Pikeville. And Union
closed out the 2009 season with a 37-31
overtime loss to Belhaven.
Union versus NCAA Division I
Union has faced 6 difference NCAA
Division I opponents and will play its
seventh DI foe on Sept. 18, at Wofford
HEAD COACH
TOMMY REID
Entering his ninth
full season as the Union
College head football
coach, Tommy Reid
is beginning his 15th
season overall with the
program.
Reid is the seventh head coach for the
Bulldogs since Union reinstated football as
a sponsored sport in 1984, and he is the 10th
different person to lead the team during the
47-year history of the program.
As the Bulldogs’ head coach, Reid has
compiled an 35-56 overall record. Under
his tutelage, Reid has had one AFCA NAIA
All-American Team and two NAIA All-
American honorable mentions. In addition,
15 players have been honored by College
Fanz Sports Network with four landing on
the Second Team, one making the Third
Team, two on the Fourth Team and eight
others as honorable mentions. Reid has had
two players named a NAIA First Team All-
American by Don Hansen’s National Weekly
Football Gazette. Additionally, three more
were selected for the Third Team with 16
more earning NAIA All-American Honorable
Mentions in Don Hansen’s National Weekly
Football Gazette.
Additionally, 32 players have been named
to the Mid-South Conference First Team
under Reid’s watch with team receiving
MSC Offensive Player of the Year honors
and one collecting the MSC Defensive
Freshman of the Year nod.
The 2008 season was Reid’s best to
date as Union posted a 9-3 overall record
and advanced to the NAIA Football
Championship Series for the first time in
program history. The Bulldogs were ranked
in the NAIA Top 25 most of the season and
finished the year at No. 10.
In addition to the head coaching duties,
Reid is the team’s offensive coordinator
and the offensive line coach. He also serves
the Union Department of Athletics as an
assistant athletic director.
Prior to becoming the head coach, Reid
served as the team’s defensive coordinator
and special teams coordinator for two-plus
seasons. He has been at Union since the 1996
season when he joined the staff as a graduate
assistant. Before his arrival in Barbourville,
Reid coached one year at Glenville State
(W.Va.) College, his alma mater.
At Glenville State, Reid was a three-year
starter, being named an All-Conference
Honorable Mention following his sophomore
and junior seasons. He had a solid senior
campaign, earning All-Conference First
Team honors. Reid helped Glenville State to
the NAIA Division I championship game in
1993 and was a member of Glenville State’s
playoff team in 1994.
In 2004, Reid was inducted into the Vinton
County (Ohio) High School Athletic Hall of
fame.
GAME NOTES
GAME 1 - CAMPBELLSVILLE
Sept. 4, 2010
CAMPBELLSVILLE 47
UNION 36
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - It should’ve been a time to
celebrate the rushing prowess of Terence Pollock, but
the question of ‘what if’ spoiled the moment as miscues
cost Union in a 47-36 season-opening loss to visiting
Campbellsville (Ky.) Saturday.
Fifth-year senior Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) recorded
his 13th career 100-yard rushing game as racked
up 163 yards and a score on 26 carries in becoming
Union’s all-time leading rusher. The 5-foot-10 tailback
now has 2,972 career rushing marks as he went from
third on the list to fi rst, surpassing Scott Russell (2,854)
and Clarence Mackey (2,822).
However, Pollock’s coronation was tempered by the
fact six Union turnovers resulted in 21 points for Campbellsville,
a major contributing factor in the 11-point loss.
The yellow hankie was none to kind to the Bulldogs,
who were fl agged nine times for 96 yards. And while
three of Union’s turnovers didn’t result in points for
Campbellsville, two of them kept points off of the board
for Union as the Tigers picked of two passes in the end
zone.
The 83 combined points are the most scored in series
history, eclipsing the previous of 79 in 1999, a 52-27 win
for Campbellsville. The Tigers now hold the series lead
at 14-10.
After falling behind 14 in the fi rst half, Union battled
back to tie the game at 26-26 when Mike Brinkley
(Anthony, Fla.) hit Sean Mackey (Reddick, Fla.) for a
12-yard scoring pass with 12:56 to go in the third.
But Campbellsville immediately answered when
Harold Small hauled in a 27-yard pass to cap a threeplay,
66-yard drive to put the Tigers up 33-26 with 11:47
remaining in the quarter.
Campbellsville led by as much as 40-26 in the second
half on its way to the 47-36 win.
