Heading into its seventh meeting 

ever, the Union-Pikeville series has 

been one where the home team has 

been able to hold fast. 

Pikeville won back-to-back 

contests in 2004 and 2005, and 

both teams have recorded overtime 

victories. 

Last year’s 39-17 Union victory 

was the series’ largest margin of 

victory. Four of the six game have 

been decided by eight or few points, 

but only the 2002 (10 points) and 

2006 (22 points) battles have had 

lopsided outcomes.

Struggling to convert turnovers into points 

The Union defense has done well 

in causing turnovers as opponents 

have turned the ball over 8 times during 

the first three games. Yet Union 

vs. 

Pikeville 

(1-2, 0-0 MSC East) 

has turned the ball over 9 times. 

Union has had issues cashing those 

turnovers into points. The Bulldogs 

have turned the opponents’ 8 miscues 

into just 20 points, while the opponents 

have scored 28 points off of 

Union’s 9 turnovers. 

In the 55-14 loss at Malone, Union 

was the beneficiary of two Malone 

miscues, scoring 7 points off of 

them as a result. Malone converted 

Union’s 5 turnovers into 14 points. 

Among the NAIA’s best 

Despite 0-3 on the season, Union 

has 5 players to rank in the Top 10 in 

13 different statistically categories in 

the NAIA.

Red-Zone effectiveness 

Union has been in the red zone 

11 times during the first 2 games of 

the season, scoring 9 times. Union’s 

opponents have also entered the red 

zone 15 times, but have scored just 

11 times. 

However, Union has only scored 51 

points while its opponents has tallied 

75 points. The difference is that 3 of 

Union’s red-zone scores have been 

field goals with opponents racking up 

11 TDs (2 of the PATs were no good). 

Waters aiming for passing record 

QB Joey Waters (5-11, 207, SR) 

continues his assault on the Bulldog 

record. 

Through the first two games of 

the season, Waters has completed 

70-of-108 passes for 805 yards and 

9 touchdowns. Waters is currently 

third on the all-time passing yardage 

list at 5,469 and is just 1,047 yards 

away from overtaking Worley for the 

top spot. Stanley Niece is second at 

5,524 yards. 

Waters is also 28 completions and 

143 attempts away from those career 

records. Niece owns both marks at 

496 completions and 977 attempts. 

Waters holds the program record for 

touchdown passes in a season (21) 

and touchdown passes in a career 

(48). 

Callahan, Kelly on pace to history 

As targets for Waters, WR Kyle 

Callahan (6-0, 197, JR) and WR 

Shawn Kelly (5-8, 175, SR) are on 

pace to break some single-season 

receiving and career records. 

With 21 receptions, Callahan is averaging 

7.0 catches per game. At the 

current rate, he could haul in 75-plus

MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK 

Matt Rich (Belhaven/Offensive), Gabe Guthrie (Georgetown/Defensive) and Hunter Meade (Cumberlands/Special 

Teams) have been named this weeks Mid-South Conference Players of the Week in football. 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Belhaven quarterback Matt Rich is the MSC Offensive Player of the Week. The 6’3 senior from Cumming, Georgia 

threw a school-record six touchdowns in the Blazers 55-43 victory over Texas College. Rich fi nished the day completing 

19 of 27 passes for 358 yards. Matt also ran for two additional touchdowns for the Blazers, now 1-2 on the season. 

Belhaven will open Mid-South Conference play next weekend at 6:30 p.m. when they host NAIA #6 Bethel College. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

The MSC Defensive Player of the Week comes from NAIA #9 Georgetown College. Gabe Guthrie, a 6’1 senior linebacker 

from Xenia, Ohio recorded 14 total tackles (11 solo) in the Tigers 63-3 win over MSC foe Cumberland University 

(TN). Gabe also tallied four sacks in just under three quarters of action for the Tigers (1-1). Up next for the Tigers will be 

a visit to undefeated and #13 ranked Virginia-Wise for a 1:30 p.m. Mid-South game. 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Junior kicker Hunter Meade of the University of the Cumberlands is the MSC Special Teams Player of the Week. 

Meade, a 5’11 native of Bristol, Virginia, was successful on both his point after attempts during the Patriots 35-17 loss 

against NCAA DII Mars Hill College. Meade also nailed a 26 yard fi eld goal, his only attempt of the game. The nationally 

recognized Cumberlands (2-1) will be at home this coming weekend as they host WVU Tech in a MSC divisional game. 

Only two players have amassed 800- 

plus receiving yards in a season with 

Jim Maynor’s 805 in 2000 being the 

other. 

With 13 receptions this season, 

Kelly now ranks 10th on the all-time 

career receptions list. To date, he has 



80 career receptions for 958 yards, a 

12.0 yard per reception average and 

8 TDs. Kelly is 1 reception away 

from tying Brandon Hawkins for 

9th all-time and 5 away from tying 

Jim Maynor for the No. 8 spot. 

Kelly needs just 42 yards receiving to 

become the 12th play to amass 1,000 

career receiving yards. 

On the year, Kelly has 13 catches 

for 216 yards and 3 TDs. Kelly’s best 

season to date came during the 2005 

season when he hauled in 31 passes 

for 398 yards and 4 TDs. 

O’Neal tackles record 

LB Patrick O’Neal (6-1, 215, SR) 

has led Union in tackles in all three 

seasons he’s played, and he’s continued 

that theme during the first three 

games of the year. He already has 48 

total tackles, racking up school-record 

20 in the season opener against 

University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 

In nine games last season, O’Neal 

recorded 102 tackles and ranked third 

in the Mid-South and sixth in the 

NAIA with 11.3 tackles per game. 

With his 102 tackles in 2006, 

O’Neal became the first players since 

Herman Lovett in 2002 to record 100 

or more tackles in a season. Lovette 

had 101 total tackles in 2002. 

For his career, O’Neal has 295 total 

tackles. John Luttrell holds the season 

and career tackle records at 135 

and 392, respectively. If O’Neal is to 

break the career record, he will need 

to bag 98 more tackles - which would 

break the season mark. 

Running toward history 

RB Terence Pollock (5-9, 214, SO) 

had arguably the best rushing season 

for a freshman in program history 

as his 655 yards on the ground rank 

him 11th for most yards in a season. 

After rushing for 68 yards during his 

first two games of the season, he is 

277 yards away from becoming just 

the ninth player in Bulldog program

CORBIN, Ky. - A trio of Bulldogs netted milestones in Union 

College’s season opener; however, it was the Patriots of University 

of the Cumberlands (Ky.) that were celebrating as Cumberlands 

pulled out the 24-19 decision Saturday to hang on to the Brass 

Lantern at Campbell Field in Corbin, Ky. 

Senior linebacker Patrick O’Neal (Lula, Ga.) tied the school record 

for tackles in a game with 20, equaling the mark set by John Fey 

which was set back in 1997. Sophomore defensive back Ty Harris 

(Monroe, Ga.) picked off three passes to equal the school record. 

Harris has now twice accomplished the feat and joins Lavarus 

McCloud and C.J. Westerman as the only ones to achieve the milestone. 

Senior quarterback Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) became 

the fi rst player in school history to amass 40-plus touchdown passes 

as he now stands alone in that category with 41. 

But it went all for naught as Cumberlands was able to hold strong 

and pull out the fi ve-point win to keep the Brass Lantern for the 

second year in a row. 

The contest was also a Mid-South Conference East showdown 

as Cumberlands improved to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in MSC East play. 

Union dropped to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. 

Although Union won the turnover battle as Cumberlands coughed 

it up four times to Union’s two, the last Bulldog miscue ultimately 

proved costly. 

Down 17-13 with just over four minutes to play, Brian Abshire 

picked off a Waters pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown to 

give Cumberlands a 24-13 cushion with 3:58 to play. 

Not ready to give up, Union covered 60 yards in four plays to cut 

into the defi cit. Waters hooked up with Kyle Callahan (Covington, 

Ky.) for a 33-yard touchdown pass, making it 24-19 with 2:58 

remaining. The Bulldogs went for two but Waters was stopped just 

short of the goal line. 

Union, though, would not get a chance to take the lead. Cumberlands 

took the ensuring possession and ran out the clock. A Kyle 

King 24-yard run sealed the victory as it put the ball on the Union 8 

with just over a minute left with one timeout left for Union. 

Cumberlands outgained Union 323-312 in total offense with 248 

yards coming on the ground. King led Cumberlands with 92 yards 

and two scores on 25 carries. Bob Evans ran for 61 yards on fi ve 

carries. King also completed 5-of-15 passes for 75 yards. 

Waters tossed 24-of-39 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns. 

Callahan hauled in seven passes for 70 yards and two 

scores, while Chris Collopy (Manchester, Ky.) pulled down six for 47 

yards. Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) had four catches for 71 yards. 

Union rushed for 63 yards with Lee Miles (Ross, Ohio) leading the 

way with 52.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Christening its new synthetic turf field, 

Union College covered the field numerous times Saturday. 

However, it was visiting Lambuth (Tenn.) University that left 

happy as it outlasted Union 48-44. 

A common belief is that play is faster on synthetic turf rather 

than grass. And it sure appeared to be the case at Burch/Nau 

Field as Union and Lambuth combined for 800 yards in total 

offense as well as 440 kickoff return yardage. 

The Eagles (1-1 overall) racked up 451 yards in total offense 

with 244 coming on the ground and 207 through the air. Meanwhile, 

the Bulldogs (0-2 overall) compiled 349 yards in total 

offense with 335 coming through the air and just 14 rushing. 

Senior quarterback Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) had a field 

day as he completed 26-of-35 passes for 335 yards and four 

touchdowns. More importantly, he had no interceptions. 

Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) had a big day as he hauled in 

seven passes for 139 yards and two scores. Kyle Callahan 

(Covington, Ky.) pulled down a team-high eight catches for 

79 yards, while Rolondo Dyer (Lawrenceburg, Ga.) had three 

receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown. 

Running back Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) led the 

Bulldog ground attack with 43 yards on 20 carries as he also 

caught three passes for 27 yards and a score. 

Both teams came out firing on all cylinders. The two squads 

combined for 28 first-quarter points and Lambuth held a 34-30 

edge at the half. 

The Bulldogs took the opening possession of the second 

half and drove the ball 57 yards on eight plays to take the lead. 

Waters capped the drive with a nine-yard bootleg run, making it 

37-34 with 11:30 to play in the third. 

With 7:45 to go in the third, Kevin Haynes scored his third 

touchdown of the game on a three-yard run, capping a nineplay, 

65-yard march by the Eagles. Following Chris McGinn’s 

PAT, Lambuth led 41-37. 

Union reclaimed the lead just before time expired in the third. 

With three seconds remaining, Waters hooked up with Pollock 

on a screen play that covered 15 yards for the score, giving 

Union a 44-41 lead. 

But on the ensuing kickoff, Allen Ervin returned the ball 50 

yards to the Union 38 to give the Eagles a short field to work 

with. Eight plays later, Mark Kelley hit Clint Anderson in the 

back of the end zone for a four-yard scoring strike as Lambuth 

claimed a 48-44 lead with 10:53 to play.

CANTON, Ohio - Malone (Ohio) College reeled off 27 firstquarter 

points as it defeated visiting Union College 55-21 

Saturday at Fawcett Stadium. 

The Pioneers (2-1 overall) jumped out to a 20-0 lead before 

the Bulldogs (0-3 overall) cracked the scoring column. Malone 

tacked on Derek Deardorff 14-yard touchdown reception in the 

second as it took a 34-7 cushion into the half. 

Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) hit Kyle Callahan (Covington, 

Ky.) for 10-yard touchdown pass at the 13:12 mark in the third, 

cutting the margin to 34-14. However, Malone scored twice in 

the period to stretch the margin to 48-14. 

Waters hit Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) for a 5-yard scoring 

strike in the fourth for the Bulldogs’ final tally. But it was too 

little, too late as Malone recorded the 55-21 victory. 

Malone outgained Union 479-247 in total offense. Malone 

racked up 362 yards through the air and 117 on the ground, 

while Union had 240 yards passing and only seven yards 

rushing. 

Waters completed 20-of-34 passes for 221 yards and three 

scores while having three passes picked off. Callahan pulled 

down six passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
