Bulldogs Seeking To Reverse Trend 

Overall, the Bulldogs have dominated the 

Union-UVa-Wise series. However, recently, the 

Cavaliers have won the last two meetings. In 

2006, UVa-Wise posted a 21-6 decision. The 

Cavs opened up a 35-3 halftime lead and led 

42-3 early in the third in 2007, but UVa-Wise 

had to hold on for the 42-37 victory as Union 

reeled off 34 second-half points.

Virginia Is For Lovers ... & Football 

By and large, Union has enjoyed its time 

playing teams from the state of Virginia with a 

7-6 mark. 

The Bulldogs have played just three schools 

from Virginia. 

Here is a look at how Union’s fared against 

teams from Virginia:

UC Drops 7 Spots In The Polls 

For the seventh week in a row, Union is 

ranked in the NAIA Football Top 25 Coaches’ 

Poll, however, the Bulldogs fell a few spots in 

vs. 

UVa-Wise 

(7-1, 4-0 MSC East) 

this week’s rankings. After suffered a 33-27 

loss at then-No. 25 Shorter (Ga.), the Bulldogs 

garnered 83 total points in the voting to come in 

at No. 21, 4 more than No. 22 Shorter. 

When Union cracked the Top 25 on Sept. 

15 by coming in 18th, it marked the first 

appearance in the polls by a Bulldog football 

squad since the 1996 Preseason Poll. Union 

then moved up to No. 16 in the Sept. 22 Top 25 

Poll before jumping to No. 12 in Sept. 29 Top 

25 Poll. Union moved up to No. 11 in the Oct. 6 

rankings. However, a loss to Cumberlands (Ky.) 

dropped Union to No. 17 in the Oct. 13 ratings 

but moved back up to No. 14 on Oct. 20. 

Another Week, Another Ranked Opponent 

For the fifth time this season, Union will 

square off against a NAIA Top 25 team. The 

Bulldogs have faced then-No. 24 Malone 

(Ohio) on Sept. 13, then-No. 18 Georgetown 

(Ky.) on Sept. 27, then-No. 16 Cumberlands 

(Ky.) on Oct. 11 and then-No. 25 Shorter (Ga.) 

on Oct. 23, going 2-2 in those games. 

Now, Union will meet up against No. 10 

UVa-Wise on Saturday. Technically, Union has 

already played 5 ranked teams. However, when 

Union and now-No. 17 Lambuth (Tenn.) met up 

on Sept. 6, neither team was ranked, let alone 

received a vote. 

The last time Union defeated a Top 10 team 

came during the 2005 season when Union upset 

then-No. 5 Cumberlands (Ky.) 35-34 on Nov. 5, 

2005, in Williamsburg, Ky.

in 5 of the games. 

In the games Union has not led in time of 

possession, the team is 1-2. In the two losses, 

the Bulldogs have been held under 23 minutes 

in time of possession. 

Despite nearly rallying back to beat Shorter 

(Ga.) on Oct. 23, Union was limited to a 

season-low 22:13. 

Making Second-Half Adjustments 

Union owns the third quarter this season, 

outscoring its opponents 83-21. The Bulldogs 

hold a slight edge in the first half, outscoring 

opponents 139-115 during the first two quarters. 

However, Union has only allowed 21 points 

in the third quarter - 14 of them coming in 

the 45-27 win at West Virginia Tech on Oct. 

4. Although WV Tech scored 14 in the third, 

Union reeled off 28 points in the frame. A 

big reason for this is due to the fact that the 

Bulldogs average 7:56 in time of possession 

in the third quarter. Currently, Union averages 

16:07 in time of possession in the second half, 

but only average 13:30 in the first half. 

Opponents do hold the advantage in the 

fourth quarter, outscoring Union 73-40. Yet, 

Union has owned at least a 7-point lead going 

into the fourth quarter in all but 2 games. 

However, versus Cumberlands, the game was 

tied at 21 going into the fourth, and the Patriots 

outscored Union 14-7 in the fourth to pull out 

the 35-28 victory. This marked the first time all 

season Union trailed in the fourth quarter. 

Against Shorter, Union trailed 28-14 heading 

into the fourth as the Hawks held on for the 33- 

27 decision on Oct. 23.

By Air Or By Land - UC Getting It Done 

By and large, Union has been a pass-oriented 

team in recent years. However, judging by the 

first 8 games, things could be changing. 

Union tallied 2,796 total yards on offense 

with 1,654 through the air and 1,142 on the 

ground - one of the more balanced attacks 

Union has displayed in some time. In the 23-13 

win at Faulkner (Ala.), the Bulldogs racked 

up 334 yards rushing and 517 yards in total 

offense. The last time Union ran for more than 

300 yards came in a 57-27 win over Bethel 

(Tenn.) on Oct. 11, 2003, as the Bulldogs 

amassed 377 yards on the ground. 

But in the last 5 games, Union has been held 

to 534 yards rushing while the Bulldogs have 

passed for 1,093 yards. 

A big reason for the balanced offensive attack 

improved and experienced offensive line. 

The Bulldogs O-line is anchored by LT 

Quintin Borders (SO, 6-6, 318), who was a First 

Team All-MSC East selection as a freshman in 

2007. C Brock Evans (JR, 6-1, 292) has proven 

to be a solid contributor on the line as has RG 

Joe Mullinax (SO, 6-0, 317). Currently, Evans 

is the lone junior on the 2-deep at any of the 

o-line positions and there are no seniors.

Red-Zone Issues? 

The Bulldogs are doing a good job of getting 

points in the red zone, scoring 90.0% (27 of 30) 

of the time inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. 

However, of those 27 red-zone scores, 21 have 

been for TDs while Union has booted 6 FGs. 

On the flipside, opponents are scoring at a 

92.0% rate (23 of 25) inside the red zone with 

22 scores being touchdowns. In all, 22 of the 

29 touchdowns Union has allowed have come 

inside the 20. 

Versus Pikeville (Ky.) on Oct. 18, Union 

recorded its first red-zone stop as it forced the 

Bears to turn the ball over on downs. Pikeville 

did end up scoring 3 times in the red-zone, but

MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK 

Cumberland University’s James McClain, Shorter College’s Logan Lollis and Pikeville College’s Kyle Chilton have been 

named Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week, the conference announced on Sunday. 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

McClain scored four times -- two rushing and two receiving touchdowns -- to earn MSC Offensive Player of the 

Week. The Goodlettsville, Tenn., freshman running back rushed for 57 yards and caught four passes for 160 yards in 

Cumberland’s 46-43 win at Belhaven. McClain caught touchdown passes of 70 and 58 yards and ran for touchdowns 

from 18 and seven yards to help the Bulldogs remain atop the MSC West with a 3-0 record. Cumberland is 4-3 overall. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Lollis recorded 11 tackles -- seven solo and four assisted -- to earn MSC Defensive Player of the Week. The junior 

linebacker from Lyons, Ga., also recorded a sack in the Hawks’ 33-27 win over No. 14-ranked Union. Lollis ranks in the 

conference’s top-10 in tackles (9.1) and sacks per game (0.6). 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Chilton connected on a pair of pair of fi eld goals to earn MSC Special Teams Player of the Week. The junior placekicker/ 

punter, made fi eld goals of 45 and 46 yards for the Bears only points in a 14-6 loss to No. 11 UVa-Wise. The Clearwater, 

Fla., native, became the program’s all-time fi eld goal leader with his two makes. He also averaged more than 44.4 yards 

per punt including two inside the 20 yard line to earn his second straight weekly award. 

those scores came in the fourth-quarter against 

the second- and third-string defense. 

Union made its second red-zone stop against 

Shorter (Ga.) on Oct. 23 when the Bulldogs 

blocked a 21-yard field goal attempt. 

Brinkley Putting Up Quality Numbers 

Although he’s been rather quiet and kind 

of flying under the radar, QB Mike Brinkley 

(R-FR, 6-1, 161) is weaving together a solid 

season. Through 8 games, he completed 59.6% 

(130 of 218) of his passes for 1,643 yards 

- making it 12th 1,500-yard passing season in 

program history. 

Brinkley also has thrown for 23 TDs, 



marking the third time in program history a 

quarterback has thrown for 20 or more scores 

in a season. Joey Waters accomplished the feat 

twice, tossing 21 touchdown passes in 2005 and 

27 in 2007. 

In addition, Brinkley ranks 14th in the NAIA 

in pass efficiency at 150.4. 

On Oct. 18, Brinkley tied a 22-year-old 

record with 5 TD passes in the 42-24 win 

over Pikeville (Ky.). Greg Duncum first 

accomplished the feat in a game versus 

Lambuth (Tenn.) in 1986. 

Brinkley has spread the wealth as no 

Bulldog has more than 28 receptions with five 

receivers having at least 16 catches on the year. 

In addition, he has thrown to eight different 

receivers and seven of whom have at least 1 TD 

reception.

Bulldogs Putting Up The Points 

Twice this season, Union put up 28 points 

in a quarter. The Bulldogs scored 28 points in 

the second quarter versus Pikeville (Ky.) on 

Oct. 18 en route to a 35-3 halftime lead and 

42-24 victory. On Oct. 4, Union reeled off 28 

third-quarter points against West Virginia Tech 

to break open a 14-7 halftime lead on its way to 

the 45-27 victory. 

On the season, Union has registered 262 

points for an average of 32.8 points per game. 

Currently, the 235 points rank 8th most in 

program history. Last season, Union posted 287 

points which ranks fifth in program history.

Manning The Line 

Union has done a good job owning the line of 

scrimmage on both sides of the ball. 

The Bulldog offensive line has only 

surrendered a total of 12 sacks for 83 yards. 

Meanwhile, Union has sacked its opponents 

16 times for 123 yards. In addition, Union has 

recorded 55 tackles for a loss of 210 yards. 

DL Arthur Johnson (JR, 5-10, 300), DL 

Patrick Burke (SR, 5-8, 213), DL Michael Gold 

(JR, 6-3, 248), DL Jason Hammontree (SO, 

6-0, 249) and DL Quentin Penn (R-FR, 6-0, 

232) have done a good job getting pressure 

up front and creating avenues for the Bulldog 

linebacking corps to operate. Johnson, Burke, 

Gold, Hammontree and Penn have combined 

for 104 total tackles, but the quintet has 14.0 

TFL and 5.0 sacks. 

Against Cumberlands, Hammontree came 

up huge as he also recovered a pair of fumbles 

with one resulting in a Bulldog touchdown. It 

marked the second time this season a Bulldog 

has recovered 2 fumbles in a game. LB Willie 

Williams (SR, 6-4, 220) recovered 2 fumbles 

in the 27-21 season-opening win at Lambuth 

(Tenn.). 

Catching Up With Callahan 

WR Kyle Callahan (JR, 6-0, 197) has hauled 

in a 28 passes for 329 yards and 9 TDs this 

season, moving him into the Top 10 all-time in 

receptions. He currently has 104 career catches 

for 1,418 yards and 19 TDs, putting him 5th on 

the all-time list. Also, the Covington, Ky. native 

is the 5th player in program history to haul in a 

100 passes. 

In addition, Callahan needs 206 receiving 

yards for second place. To overtake the top spot, 

Callahan would have to amass 665 receiving 

yards as Pete Greene holds that mark at 2,082. 

Callahan now owns at least a share of the 

single-season and career TD receptions records. 

He currently has 9 TDs on the season and 19 for 

his career, tying him with Courtney Elesby for 

the single-season mark as he is the sole owner 

of the career record. 

Last season, Callahan became the 14th player 

in program history to amass 40 receptions in 

a season when he hauled in 60 passes for 816 

yards and 8 TDs. If he is able to haul in 12 more 

passes this season, Callahan will become only 

the second player in program history to have 

two 40-reception seasons under his belt. 

In addition, he was just the 3rd player in 

program history to amass at least 60 receptions 

in a season and 4th to rack up over 800 

receiving yards.

Williams Trying To Stay On Pace 

LB Willie Williams (SR, 6-4, 220) has 

been a force to be reckoned with this season, 

registering 5 double-digit tackle performances 

as well as earning MSC and NAIA Defensive 

Player of the Week honors. 



GAME NOTES 

Through 8 games, Williams has 105 total 

tackles, 14.0 TFL and 7.5 sacks for an average 

of 13.1 stops, 1.79 TFL and 0.9 sacks per game. 

At his current pace, Williams could make 

a run at the single-season records for tackles, 

TFLs and sacks. The single-season marks are 

143 tackles (set by Patrick O’Neal in 2007), 

24.0 TFL (set by Brandon Webb in 2006) and 

17.0 sacks (set by Burley Burkhart in 1985). 

His 105 tackles ranks 6th in program history 

while his 7.5 sacks and 14.0 TFL rank 7th alltime.

LBs Definitely Backing Up The D-Line 

The LB trio of Willie Williams (SR, 6-4, 

220), Marekus Smith (SR, 5-11, 196) and 

Depaul Peyton (SR, 5-10, 222) are taking 

advantage of the opportunities the defensive 

line is creating for them. The three have 

combined for 200 tackles, 26.0 TFL of 110 

yards, 10.5 sacks, 5 forced fumble, 4 fumble 

recoveries, 1 INT, 6 pass breakups and 3 

blocked kicks. 

Versus Cumberlands (Ky.), LB Matt Green 

(FR, 5-10, 250) had his best game to date, 

recording 9 total tackles. Heading into the Oct. 

11 game, Green had just 1 total stop and 1 QB 

hurry to his credit. 

Running Up The Charts 

RB Terence Pollock (JR, 5-10, 223) became 

the 3rd player in program history to rush for 

over 2,000 yards in a career. The junior back 

registered his 9th 100-yard game with 161 yards 

and 1 TD on 15 carries versus Pikeville (Ky.) 

on Oct. Pollock now has 2,202 career rushing 

yards, needing 653 for the top spot. 

He now only trails Scott Russell (2,854 

rushing yards) and Clarence Mackey (2,822 

rushing yards) on the all-time rushing list.

Pollock Piecing Together Memorable Season 

RB Terence Pollock (JR, 5-10, 223) is not 

only compiling some serious career numbers, 

but he is on pace to record one of the top 

rushing seasons in program history. 

Through 8 games, Pollock has ran for 829 

yards and 8 TDs on 130 carries, making it the 

6th best rushing season in program history. At 

his current pace of averaging 103.6 yards per 

game, Pollock could finish with over 1,139.6 

which would by shy the single-season mark of 

1,158 set by Clarence Mackey in 1993. 

To date, there have been only two 1,000-yard 

rushing seasons in program history - Mackey’a 

1,158 yards in 1993 and Scott Russell’s 1,046 

yards in 1994. 

To eclipse Mackey’s record, Pollock will 

need to average 110.0 yards per game this rest 

of season. In addition, Pollock needs to average 

57.0 yards per game to become just the 3rd 

player in program history to rush for a 1,000 

yards in a season.

Special Teams Truly Becoming A Specialty 

Union has had a history of big plays on 

special teams. Whether it’s big returns, blocked 

kicks or quality punting, the Bulldogs have 

shined on special teams in years past and 2008 

doesn’t look any different. 

Special teams played a huge role in Union’s 

comeback attempt at Shorter (Ga.) on Oct. 

23. The Bulldogs blocked a punt and a field 

goal with both eventually resulting in a Union 

touchdown. On the season, Union has blocked 

a total of 6 kicks with LB Marekus Smith (SR, 

5-11, 196) and DB Cain Smith (FR, 6-0, 186) 

each blocking 2. 

P/K Jacob Appleby (FR, 5-9, 155) has had 2 

multi-field goal games, including 3-for-3 outing 

against Faulkner (Ala.) on Sept. 20. He is 6-for- 

8 on field goals this season and 34-for-35 on 

PATs as he is averaging 6.5 points per game. 

WR Chris Thomas (FR, 5-11, 162) is proving 

to be a dangerous threat returning kicks and 

punts, averaging 22.9 yards per kick return and 

5.5 yards per punt return. 

P/K Chad Boyington (FR, 5-9, 155) is only 

averaging 34.1 yards per punt, but 12 of his 36 

punts have pinned opponents inside their 20. He 

has averaged 40.5 yards per punt in his last 3 

games. Against Cumberlands (Ky.) on Oct. 11, 

he averaged 42.0 yards per punt with a seasonlong 

of 50 and pinning Cumberlands inside 

the 20 once. Versus Pikeville (Ky.) on Oct. 18, 

Boyington averaged 43.8 yards per punt with 

a long of 68 yards - 6 yards shy of the school 

record, and pinned Pikeville on its 1-yard line. 

Against Shorter (Ga.) on Oct. 23, Boyington 

averaged 36.0 yards per punt with a long of 51 

while pinning the Hawks inside their 20 twice. 

He has had a punt of 50 or more yards in each 

of the last 3 games. 

On the flipside, opponents have only made 2 

field goals against the Bulldogs. 

Harris “Picking” Up Where He Left “Off” 

DB Ty Harris (JR, 5-10, 163) wasted little 

time “picking” on opposing quarterbacks as he 

netted an interception against Malone (Ohio) on 

Sept. 13. 

Harris now has 8 career INTs. The school 

record is 12, which is held by Ernest Johnson. 

He needs just 1 more INTs to tie Tally Adams 

for 5th in program history. 

Twice in the past 2 seasons, DB Ty Harris 

(5-10, 163, JR) tied the school record for 

interceptions in a game with 3. On Sept. 9, 

2006, he picked off 3 passes at NCAA Division 

II Chowan (N.C.) as a freshman. Harris then 

picked off 3 passes vs. Cumberlands (Ky.) on 

Sept. 1, 2007. 

He joins Lavarus McCloud and C.J. 

Westerman as the only ones in program history 

with a 3-INT game. 

Versus Cumberlands on Oct. 11, Harris had 

a solid performance against the run-oriented 

Patriots. He had 6 total tackles, 0.5 TFL, 2 pass 

breakups and forced a fumble that prevented 

Cumberlands from scoring on what would’ve 

been an 80-yard pass play. 

Secondary Holding Its Own 

In addition to DB Ty Harris (JR, 5-10, 163), 

the Bulldog secondary has done a good job 

containing the opposition. DB Terry Young 

(SO, 5-8, 170) is fourth on the team in tackles 

with 32 total stops with 2.0 TFL, 1 INT, 1 pass 

breakup, 1 fumble recovery and 1 defensive 

TD. DB Jeremy Agbomi (JR, 6-0, 167) is third 

on the team in tackles with 34 total tackles with 

4.5 TFL, 1 INT, 1 breakup, and 1 QB hurry,

while DB Michael Clark (FR, 5-6, 162) has 25 

stops, 1 INT, 2 breakups and a forced fumble. 

DB Khambrel Simpkins (JR, 5-10, 185) 

has 17 stops with 2 breakups, and Harris has 

22 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1 INT, 7 breakups and a 

forced fumble. DB Josh Littleton (JR, 5-11, 

185) rounds out the corps with 22 stops, 2.5 

TFL, 0.5 sacks and 5 breakups. 

Converting Turnovers Into Points 

Union has been winning the turnover battles 

this season has the Bulldogs have created 16 

takeaways and only had 11 giveaways. Also, 

Union has been able to turn those takeaways 

in to 59 points this season, while opponents 

have only registered 28 points off of Union’s 

miscues. 

In Union’s last 13 games, Union has 

converted its opponents’ 29 turnovers into 125 

points - scoring 17 TDs and 2 FGs. 

The Union defense did well in causing 

turnovers in 2007 as opponents turned the ball 

over 26 times in 11 games, while Union has 

turned the ball over 23 times.

21 Is Generally The Limit 

When determining whether Union will 

be victorious or not, 21 has been the magic 

number. Under head coach Tommy Reid, Union 

is 16-5 when holding an opponent to 21 or 

fewer points. The last time Union lost a game 

when limiting a team to 21 or fewer came on 

Nov. 11, 2006, when UVa-Wise posted a 21-6 

win. 

Meanwhile, Union is 12-44 under Reid when 

opponents score 22 or more points. 

Thus far this season, Union has registered 

4 wins when allowing more than 21 points 

- recording identical 35-28 decisions against 

Malone (Ohio) and Georgetown (Ky.) as well 

as a 45-27 victory at West Virginia Tech. Union 

also defeated Pikeville (Ky.) 42-24. The last 

time Union had 2 or more victories in a season 

in which the opponent scored 22 or more was 

2005. The Bulldogs went 4-6 that season and 

had the wins in which the opponent netted at 

least 22 points (44-33 win over Belhaven, 35-34 

win at Cumberlands, 47-28 win vs. UVa-Wise). 

Union Racking Up MSC POW Honors 

The Bulldogs have garnered a number of 

individual honors thus far this season. Union 

has amasses a total of 6 Mid-South Conference 

Player of the Week honors and 1 NAIA Player 

of the Week award.

Recent OT History Not Kind To UC 

Union has played in 5 overtime games and is 

2-3 in such contests. 

The Bulldogs won their first 2 extended 

period games, defeating Cumberland (Ky.) 

College 24-23 in 1996 and Pikeville (Ky.) 

College 17-16 in 2001. However, since then, 

Union has lost its last 3 overtime games. In 

2002, Union lost 32-29 to NCAA Division II 

Concord (W.Va.) College. The Bulldogs lost 

9-3 at Campbellsville (Ky.) University in 2003. 

Union’s last overtime game was in 2004 when it 

fell 32-25 to Pikeville. 

Kicking FGs Begins with ‘J’ 

When P/K Jacob Appleby (FR, 5-10185) 

made 3 field goals Saturday at Faulkner (Ala.), 

it mark the seventh time in program history 

the feat had been accomplished. Appleby is the 

fourth player to boot 3 field goals in a game, 

and coincidentally, all 4 players have something 

in common - their first names begin with the 

letter ‘J’. Appleby joined James Hager, Junior 

Distefano and Jeremy Macejewski on this 

exclusive list. Macejewski accomplished the 

feat three times during his career.

Head Coach 

Tommy Reid 

Entering his seventh 

full season as the Union 

College head football 

coach, Tommy Reid 

is beginning his 13th 

season overall with the 

program. 

Reid is the seventh head coach for the 

Bulldogs since Union reinstated football as 

a sponsored sport in 1984, and he is the 10th 

different person to lead the team during the 

46-year history of the program. 

As the Bulldogs’ head coach, Reid has 

compiled an 28-49 overall record. Reid has 

had two players earn NAIA All-American 

Honorable Mentions during his tenure, while 

two others were named a NAIA First Team 

All-American by Don Hansen’s National 

Weekly Football Gazette. Additionally, 

three more were selected for the Third 

Team with 16 more earning NAIA All- 

American Honorable Mentions in Don 

Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. 

Eight players were honored by Victory 

Sports Network with two landing on the 

Second Team, one making the Third Team, 

two on the Fourth Team and three others 

as honorable mentions. Additionally, 21 

players have been named to the Mid-South 

Conference First Team under Reid’s watch. 

In addition to the head coaching duties, 

Reid is the team’s offensive coordinator 

and the offensive line coach. He also serves 

the Union Department of Athletics as an 

assistant athletic director. 

Prior to becoming the head coach, Reid 

served as the team’s defensive coordinator 

and special teams coordinator for two-plus 

seasons. He has been at Union since the 1996 

season when he joined the staff as a graduate 

assistant. Before his arrival in Barbourville, 

Reid coached one year at Glenville State 

(W.Va.) College, his alma mater. 

At Glenville State, Reid was a three-year 

starter, being named an All-Conference 

Honorable Mention following his sophomore 

and junior seasons. He had a solid senior 

campaign, earning All-Conference First 

Team honors. Reid helped Glenville State to 

the NAIA Division I championship game in 

1993 and was a member of Glenville State’s 

playoff team in 1994. 

In 2004, Reid was inducted into the 

Vinton County (Ohio) High School Athletic 

Hall of fame. 

Reid is married to the former Jennifer 

Patterson, and the couple resides in 

Barbourville.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union 

College reeled 34 unanswered, secondhalf 

points, but it wasn’t enough as No. 9 

UVa-Wise held on for the 42-37 Mid-South 

Conference East victory Saturday. 

The Bulldogs (2-7 overall, 0-3 MSC 

East) trailed 35-3 at the half and was down 

42-3 with 12:53 to play in the third before 

rallying 

The Cavaliers (8-1 overall, 3-0 MSC 

East) scored on all five of its first-half 

possessions en route to a 35-3 advantage. 

All five drives were 65 yards or longer, yet 

UVa-Wise didn’t burn much time off the 

clock as it controlled the ball for just 12 

minutes and 46 seconds in the first half. 

Union, on the other hand, struggled. 

Twice, the Bulldogs turned the ball over on 

downs in Cavalier territory. Union creeped 

into the red zone twice in the first half but 

only managed three points as it trailed 35-3 

at the break. 

As the second got underway, it looked 

bleak for the Bulldogs as a muffed kickoff 

allowed the Cavs to take over on the Union 

36. Seven plays later, Randy Hippeard 

hooked up with Jason Lovett for the fourth 

time on the afternoon for a 29-yard scoring 

pass as the lead swelled to 42-3 with 12:53 

to play in the third. 

But then, Union began to slowly crawl 

back into the game. 

Taking advantage of back-to-back 

fumbles on kick returns, the Bulldogs 

scored twice within a minute and 25 

seconds to make it 42-17 with 6:34 to go in 

the third. Union’s first touchdown came on 

an 11-yard pass to Shawn Kelly (Owenton, 

Ky.), while Terence Pollock (Orange Park, 

Fla.) scampered 19 yards for the second 

touchdown. 

After UVa-Wise turned the ball over 

on downs, Pollock capped a seven-play, 

81-yard drive with a two-yard plunge to 

make it 42-24 with 1:56 remaining in the 

third. The Cavaliers again turned the ball 

over on downs, giving the Bulldogs the ball 

on their own 37. Seven plays later, Joey 

Waters (McDonough, Ga.) hit Kelly for 

a 25-yard scoring strike to make it 42-30 

with 13:00 left in the game. The PAT was 

blocked. 

UVa-Wise’s defense then stepped up, 

picking off Waters on Union’s next two 

possessions. Jahmal Potter and Ryan 

Vanover came up with the interceptions. 

Not ready to give up, Union mounted a 14- 

play, 85-yard scoring drive to cut the deficit 

to 42-37 with 1:50 to play. Waters hit Kyle 

Callahan (Covington, Ky.) for a 7-yard 

strike for the score. 

But that was as close as Union could get 

as it fell 42-37.

JACKSON, Tenn. - Union College shook off some voodoo 

Saturday as it opened the 2008 season with a 27-21 victory at 

Lambuth (Tenn.) University, marking the fi rst time since 1997 Union 

has defeated Lambuth. 

Lambuth (0-2 overall) took the early lead, marching 87 yards in 10 

plays to grab a 7-0 lead. Marquis Williams scored on a 27-yard run 

with 7:02 remaining in the fi rst. 

Union (1-0 overall) struck twice in the second quarter en route to 

a 14-7 halftime lead. At the 9:06 mark, Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) 

hit Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.) for a 17-yard touchdown pass to 

tie the game at 7-7. After a Lambuth fumble, the Bulldogs found the 

end zone in no time. Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) capped a 

four-play, 20-yard drive with a 4-yard plunge as Union seized a 14-7 

advantage with 6:03 left in the half. 

Jacob Appleby (Harvest, Ala.) hit a 20-yard fi eld goal at the 11:15 

mark in the third to make it 17-7. Midway through the third, Brinkley 

and Callahan hooked up again; this time from 10-yards out as Union 

built a 24-7 cushion. 

Early in the fourth, Lambuth cut the margin to 24-14, but Appleby 

booted an 18-yard fi eld goal to push the lead to 27-14 with 5:38 

remaining. 

Lambuth caught a break as it blocked a punt and ended up scoring 

to pull within 27-21 with 2:23 to play. 

However, the Bulldogs held on for the win, the fi rst at Lambuth 

since 1994.

Union narrowly outgained Lambuth 341-337. The Bulldogs had a 

balanced attack with 147 yards rushing and 194 yards passing. 

Offensively for Union, Brinkley completed 25-of-40 passes for 194 

yards and two scores. Callahan hauled in eight passes for 85 yards 

and two touchdowns, while Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville, Ky.) had six 

receptions for 60 yards. 

Pollock recorded his seventh 100-yard rushing game of his career, 

racking up 133 yards on 23 carries. In addition, Pollock now has 

1,506 career rushing yards. 

Defensively, newcomer and senior Willie Williams (Miami, Fla.) 

had an impressive debut with 12 total tackles, 2.5 for a loss, two 

sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. 

For Lambuth, Adam Wiese completed 13-of-19 passes for 107 

yards and two touchdowns. Wiese also led the Eagles in rushing 

with 51 yards on eight carries. Cedric Fisher led Lambuth defensively 

with 13 stops and one blocked punt.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College put together a dominating 

second-half performance to upset visiting No. 24 Malone (Ohio) 

College 35-28 Saturday, extending the Bulldogs win streak to four 

games. 

Union is off to its fi rst 2-0 start since 1994 when it went 7-3. 

Malone is now 0-1. 

Trailing 28-21 at the half, Union struggled offensively during the 

fi rst 30 minutes. The Bulldogs had the ball for only 12 minutes and 

15 seconds and amassed just 91 yards in total offense. Meanwhile, 

the Pioneers ate up 17:45 off the clock in the fi rst while racking up 

285 yards. 

But it was a different story in the second half. 

The Bulldogs dominated the third quarter, hanging on to the ball 

for 12:59 in the period. Taking the opening kick of the half, Union ate 

8:19 off the clock while march 65 yards in 15 plays in tying the game 

at 28-28. Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) hit diving Kyle Callahan (Covington, 

Ky.) in the left side of the end zone at the 6:40 mark. 

After forcing Malone to go three plays and out, Union continued its 

ball-control offense. Taking possession with 5:05 on the clock, the 

Bulldogs mounted an 11-play, 77-yard drive. Brinkley capped the 

march with a 19-yard scoring pass to Rolando Dyer (Lawrenceburg, 

Ga.) for a 35-28 lead with 27 seconds remaining in the third. 

Union continued to eat up the clock in the fourth. After reeling off 

47 offensive plays in the fi rst half, Malone had the ball just three 

times in the second half with drives of three, seven and eight plays. 

With 5:16 remaining, the Bulldogs got the ball on their 23-yard line 

and appeared to be on the move to seal the win with a fi eld goal. 

Instead, Union just chipped away at the clock, executing 11 plays in 

running out the clock to capture the 35-28 victory. 

Union had the ball for 34:21, marking the second game in a row 

it had over 34 minutes in time of possession. In spite of the large 

edge in time of possession, Malone outgained Union in total offense 

353-297. 

Despite throwing two fi rst-half interceptions, Brinkley fi nished the 

game 17-of-25 for 170 yards and four touchdowns. Callahan tied a 

22-year-old record with three touchdown catches as he pulled down 

four passes for 39 yards. He joins Albert Pellingrino as the only 

Bulldogs with three touchdown receptions in a game as Pellingrino 

accomplished the feat against Lambuth (Tenn.) University in 1986. 

Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) had just 69 yards rushing but 

58 came in the second half. Darrell Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) helped 

out with 23 yards on four carries. Ben Kelly (Cold Springs, Ky.) had 

a good all-round day seven yards rushing and 53 yards receiving 

on six catches. 

Senior Willie Williams (Miami, Fla.) had 14 total stops, a sack 

and a blocked punt to lead the Bulldog defense. Marekus Smith 

(Lithonia, Ga.) and Jeremy Agbomi (Cincinnati, Ohio) each had eight 

total tackles with Smith recording 2.5 tackles for a loss and forcing 

a fumble.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Terence Pollock ran for a career-high 198 

yards and scored twice as visiting No. 18 Union College held off 

Faulkner (Ala.) University 23-13 Saturday. 

Pollock’s (Orange Park, Fla.) fi rst carry of the day was one for the 

highlight reel as he galloped 97 yards for a touchdown on Union’s 

fi rst play from scrimmage. After the PAT, Union led 7-0 with 10:02 

remaining in the fi rst. 

The 97-yard run is the longest run in Pollock’s career. Prior to this 

season, Pollock had not had a run longer than 26 yards. Howver, he 

had a 33-yard run in the win at Lambuth (Tenn.) Universty on Sept. 

6 and now a 97-yard gallop. 

Pollock’s long sprint is close to the longest run in Bulldog history, 

but Dayna Overton had 99-yard touchdown run against Tiffi n (Ohio) 

University in 1998. 

The junior running back fi nished the day with 198 yards on 20 

carries, just 16 yards shy of James Fletcher’s single-game record of 

214, which he set against Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1985. 

As a team, Union rushed for 334 yards. The Bulldogs entered the 

game with 274 rushing yards. Union only rushed for more than 200 

yards once in 2007 (214 versus Campbellsville (Ky.) University on 

Oct. 13, 2007). The last time Union ran for more than 300 yards 

came in a 57-27 win over Bethel (Tenn.) College on Oct. 11, 2003, 

as the Bulldogs amassed 377 yards on the ground. 

Union outgained Faulkner 517-167 in total offense. Mike Brinkley 

(Anthony, Fla.) completed 12-of-30 passes for 183 yards. He had 

one interception, but it came just prior to the half and didn’t amount 

to anything. Darrell Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) helped out with 48 yards 

rushing on six carries, while Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville, Ky.) caught 

three passes for 66 yards and ran for 33 yards on one carry. 

Freshman Jacob Appleby (Harvest, Ala.) tied a school record with 

three fi eld goals as he accounted for 11 points in the 10-point victory. 

Appleby connected on fi eld goals of 22 and 34 yards in the fi rst 

half as Union built a 13-0 lead with 10:55 left in the half. 

Just before the half, Faulkner cracked scoring column just before 

the half when Phillip Moore scampered 21 yards for a touchdown 

with 46 seconds on the clock, making it 13-7 at the half. 

With 2:26 to go in the third, Appleby booted another 22-yard fi eld 

goal to up the margin to 16-7. 

Union appeared to be on its way to extend its lead early the fourth 

as it had the ball fi rst and 10 on the Faulkner 15. Twice the Bulldogs 

got the ball into the end zone only to have the play nullifi ed by a 

penalty. Facing fourth and 31 at the Faulkner 36, Union punted and 

pinned the Eagles on their 12-yard line. 

Faulkner turned the ball over on downs on its own 16, and Pollock 

scored on the very next play to put Union up 23-7 with 6:23 

remaining. 

On the ensuing drive, Faulkner marched 64 yards in nine plays for 

a touchdown. Moore hit Josh Cooper for an 8-yard pass. The Eagles 

went for two on the PAT, but the run failed to leave the score 23-13 

with 4:09 left.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - No. 16 Union College’s magical season 

continued Saturday with a 35-28 Mid-South Conference East victory 

over visiting No. 18 Georgetown (Ky.) College. 

The win improved Union to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in MSC East play, 

while Georgetown is now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the MSC East. 

Tied 21-21 at the half, Union forced Georgetown to go three plays 

and out on the opening drive of the second half. The Bulldogs then 

moved the ball 70 yards in 12 plays, eating up six minutes and eight 

seconds off the clock en route to the go-ahead score. 

A pass interference call against the Tigers gave Union the ball on 

the Georgetown 9. Two plays later, Terence Pollock (Orange Park, 

Fla.) punched the ball in from 4 yards out, making it 28-21 with 7:21 

left in third. 

Early in the fourth, Marekus Smith (Lithonia, Ga.) picked off a Mike 

Lewis pass and returned it to the Georgetown 26. But a personal 

foul penalty against Union moved the Bulldogs back to the Tiger 41. 

The penalty turned out to be a non-issue as Mike Brinkley 

(Anthony, Fla.) hit a wide open Rolando Dyer (Lawrenceburg, Ga.) 

down the middle of the fi eld for a 41-yard touchdown pass, putting 

Union us 35-21 with 13:16 to play. 

Georgetown answered on its next possession. Aided by a 42-yard 

kickoff return by A.J. Brooks, the Tigers needed only six plays to 

go 52 yards for a score. Lewis capped the drive by hitting Kaelin 

Ammons for a 24-yard strike with 10:19 remaining, cutting the 

margin to 35-28. 

The Bulldogs went into ball-control mode, eating up a lot of the 

clock during the fi nal 10 minutes of the game. However, Georgetown 

got the ball back with 44 seconds left on its own 27 and got within 

striking distance. A personal foul on Union with under 10 seconds 

to play put the ball on the Union 28-yard line. However, Terry Young 

(Orange Park, Fla.) picked off Lewis’ pass on the 5-yard line to end 

the game and seal the 35-28 Bulldog victory. 

With the loss, Georgetown dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the 

MSC East. 

Georgetown owned the time of possession in the fi rst half, holding 

the ball for 18:18. However, in the second half, Union held possession 

for 8:00 in the third quarter and 8:58 in the fourth. 

Union outgained Georgetown 350-322 in total offense. Brinkley 

had his best game of the season as he completed 17-of-22 passes 

for 253 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. 

Dyer hauled in six passes for 98 yards and two scores, all of which 

are career highs for the sophomore. Pollock had a decent day as he 

ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He also caught 

one pass for seven yards. 

Defensively, Willie Williams (Miami, Fla.) led the way with a 

season-high 15 total stops with a half sack and three quarterback 

hurries. Smith helped out with eight total tackles, one sack, a pass 

breakup and an interception.

MONTGOMERY, W.Va. - No. 12 Union College continued its winning 

ways Saturday as the Bulldogs held off host West Virginia Tech 

45-27 in a wild Mid-South Conference East battle. 

Union is 5-0 overall and 2-0 in MSC East play, marking the fi rst 

time since 1991 that the Bulldogs won their fi rst two conference 

games of the season. Union also matches its longest winning streak 

in program history, having won seven straight dating back to last 

season. Union also won seven during the 1933-34 seasons and the 

1992-93 campaigns. 

The loss dropped West Virignia Tech to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the 

MSC East. 

Freshman quarterback Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) threw for a 

career-high 258 yards on 16-of-30 passing. He also matched his career 

high for touchdown passes with four. The 6-foot-1 singal-caller 

also tossed four touchdown passes in a 35-28 win over then-No. 24 

Malone (Ohio) College on Sept. 13. 

Turnovers proved to be a deciding factor in the contest as West 

Virginia Tech turned the ball over four times while Union was 

mistake free. 

The fi rst half was slugfest as neither team could take control. 

The Bears drew fi rst blood, scoring with 28 seconds left in the fi rst 

quarter on an 8-yard pass from Michael Scott to Gary Joshway to 

make it 7-0. 

Union evened the score at the 12:38 mark in the second when 

Brinkley hooked up with Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) for a 

36-yard scoring pass. 

With 2:07 remaining in the half, Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville, Ky.) 

punched the ball in on a 6-yard run to put Union up 14-7. The score 

was set up by a Michael Clark (Winchester, Ky.) interception as he 

picked off Scott at the Bear 40 and returned it to the 6-yard line. 

The teams doubled their output from the fi rst half in the third 

quarter alone as Union outscored West Virginia Tech 28-14 in the 

period to take a 42-21 advantage into the fourth. 

Jacob Appleby (Harvest, Ala.) booted a 32-yard fi eld goal with 8:23 

remaining in the game to put Union up 45-21. 

Scott and Joshway hooked up for the third time in the game to 

make it 45-27 at the 5:12 mark. This last touchdown pass covered 

3 yards. However, Cain Smith (Lafayette, Ga.) blocked the PAT to 

make the fi nal 45-27. 

Union narrowly outgained West Virginia Tech 334-328 in total offense. 

Pollock paced the Bulldog ground game with 98 yards and a 

touchdown on 22 carries. He also caught one pass for 36 yards and 

a score. P.j. Burrowes (Middlesboro, Ky.) hauled in fi ve passes for 

66 yards and score, while Nathan Ponzer (Covington, Ky.) caught 

three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - No. 16 University of the Cumberlands 

(Ky.) ate up the yardage and the clock as the Patriots upended host 

and No. 11 Union College 35-28 Saturday in Mid-South Conference 

East action. 

With the victory, Cumberlands improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in 

league play, while Union dropped to 5-1 on the year and 2-1 in the 

MSC East. 

The Patriots also hold on to the Brass Lantern - the series traveling 

trophy, for the third year in a row. Cumberlands leads the series 

with a 21-9 record. 

Looking the statistics, Cumberlands dominated as it outgained 

Union 548-235 in total offense. The Patriots held the ball for 37 

minuts and 5 seconds, reeling off 83 offensive plays. 

Helping Cumberlands maintain possession was their execution on 

third and fourth downs. The Patriots converted 10-of-16 third-down 

situations and was 3-for-5 on fourth down, scoring twice on fourth 

down. Meanwhile, Union was only 4-for-11 on third down and 0-of-1 

on fourth down. 

Tied at 21-all heading into the fourth, Cumberlands was facing 

fourth and 9 to go when Kyle King hit Maurice Berryhill for a 28-yard 

scoring strike to make it 28-21 with 10:49 remaining. King thread 

the needle to Berryhill, who was covered heavily by Terry Young 

(Orange Park, Fla.). 

Union countered with a seven-play, 61-yard drive to even the 

score at 28-28. Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) held his composure 

in the pocket as he was being pressured and found Kyle Callahan 

(Covington, Ky.) open in the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown pass 

with 6:57 to play. 

Cumberlands wasted no time in responding, needing only four 

plays to seize the lead for good. King completed back-to-back 

passes of 15 and 45 yards to put the Patriots down on the Union 4. 

Two plays later, Freddy West punched the ball in from 1-yard out, 

giving Cumberlands a 35-28 advantage with 5:38 still on the clock. 

The Bulldogs tried to mount one more comeback, moving the 

ball down to the Patriot 35. On third and 8 at the Cumberlands 35, 

Brinkley appeared to have hit Demetrius Hicks (Frankfort, Ky.) for 

a fi rst down or possible a touchdown at the 2-yard line, but Shovon 

Patton nailed Hicks before he could fully secure the ball. On fourth, 

Brinkley scrambled away from pressure and found Callahan open, 

but the pass was just behind the senior wide receiver as the ball 

went through his hands as Union turned the ball over on downs with 

3:16 left. 

Union never had possession again as Cumberlands grinded out a 

pair of fi rst downs to run out the clock. 

The Bulldogs were held to just 50 yards rushing on 23 tries. 

Brinkley connected on 13-of-27 passes for 185 yards and two 

scores. Hicks caught three passes for 42 yards, while Chris Thomas 

(Hopkinsville, Ky.) caught three for 25 yards. Defensively, Willie 

Williams (Miami, Fla.) had a big day as he racked up 18 total stops, 

forced a fumble, recovered and returned another for a touchdown.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - It was a day of records and milestones 

as No. 17 Union College celebrated homecoming with a 42-24 Mid- 

South Conference East victory over visiting Pikeville (Ky.) College 

Saturday. 

With the win, Union improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the MSC 

East, while Pikeville dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in league play. 

The win guarantees a winning season for the Bulldogs for the fi rst 

time since 1995. 

Senior Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.) only caught four passes for 

31 yards, but he hauled in two touchdown passes to give him 17 for 

his career to set the program record. 

Freshman quarterback Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) had a very 

effecient day as he completed 15-of-17 passes for 230 yards and 

fi ve touchdowns, tying the single-game record for scoring passes 

in a game. Greg Duncum tossed fi ve touchdowns for Union against 

Lambuth (Tenn.) University during the 1986 season. 

Lastly, junior running back Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) 

cemented his name into the record book as he became the third 

player in program history to rush for 2,000 yards in a career. He 

ran for 161 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, giving him 2,126 

career rushing yards. Pollock trails only Scott Russell (2,854 rushing 

yards) and Clarence Mackey (2,822) on the all-time rushing list. 

The Bulldogs dominated the fi rst half, outgaining the Bears 326-60 

en route to a 35-3 halftime lead. Union fi nished the game with a 

443-329 edge in total offense. Union substituted freely during the 

fi nal 25 minutes of the game with second- and third-string offensive 

and defensive units getting some playing time. 

One area of concern is the number of penalties the Bulldogs were 

whistled for. Union was fl agged 13 times for 119 yards. Conversely, 

Pikeville committed seven penalties for 72 yards. 

Up 7-0 after the fi rst quarter, the Bulldogs reeled off 28 points in 

the second in building a 35-3 halftime advantage. Pollock powered 

the ball in from 13 yards out to make it 14-0 with 14:05 left in the 

half. With 10:14 to go, Callahan hauled in an 8-yard toss for his 

second touchdown pass of the day as the lead swelled to 21-0. 

Kyle Chilton put Pikeville on the board with a 49-yard fi eld goal 

into the wind, putting the score at 21-3 with 5:49 remaining. 

P.J. Burrowes (Middlesboro, Ky.) pulled down a 23-yard touchdown 

pass with 3:56 on the clock as Union built a 28-3 lead. Brinkley 

ended the half by hitting Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville, Ky.) on a 

65-yard scoring play, giving the Bulldogs a 35-3 lead at the break. 

Taking the opening possession of the second half, Union marched 

65 yards for its fi nal score. Brinkley hit Rolando Dyer (Lawrenceburg, 

Ga.) for a 29-yard scoring play for his fi fth touchdown pass of 

the game. Jacob Appleby (Harvest, Ala.) connected on his sixth PAT 

of the game to make it 42-3 with 9:55 remaining in the third. 

Pikeville scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to make the fi nal 

42-24.

ROME, Ga. - No. 14 Union College nearly pulled off the miracle 

comeback, but host No. 25 Shorter (Ga.) College held on for the 

33-27 victory Thursday. 

Shorter controlled the fl ow of the game with 404 yards rushing. 

The Hawks had just 3 yards passing and ended up outgaining the 

Bulldogs 405-235 in total offense. 

A.J. Cooley paced the Hawks with 122 yards rushing and three 

touchdowns on 30 carries. Ben Williams added 103 yards on 21 

attempts. 

Union was held to 79 yards rushing with Terence Pollock (Orange 

Park, Fla.) accounting for 76 yards on 20 carries. Mike Brinkley 

(Anthony, Fla.) completed 15-of-27 passes for three touchdowns 

and 156 yards. 

The game started off well for Union as Shorter took the opening 

possession and went three and out. The Bulldogs moved the ball 62 

yards in 11 plays, scoring on a Brinkley 8-yard pass to Rolando Dyer 

(Lawrenceburg, Ga.) for a 7-0 advantaged with 7:54 left in the fi rst. 

Shorter answered with a four-play, 56-yard drive to pull within 

7-6. Cooley punched the ball in for 10 yards out, but the two-point 

conversion was no good to leave it 7-6 with 6:07 on the clock. 

In the second quarter, it was all Shorter as Cooley added two 

scores on runs of 10 and 1 yards to give Shorter a 21-7 halftime 

lead. The second half didn’t start well for Union as Brinkley was 

picked off on the second play from scrimmage as the Hawks took 

over on its own 44. Eight plays later, Raymond Nesbitt scored on a 

14-yard run to put the Hawks up 28-7 with 9:55 left in the third. 

Union’s offense was stagnant during much of the third, but 

Marekus Smith (Lithonia, Ga.) blocked a punt and Union got the ball 

back on the Shorter 2-yard line. Two plays later, Pollock powered 

the ball in from the 1, cutting the margin to 28-14 with 2:45 to go. 

A Lukas Gonzalez booted a 30-yard fi eld goal early in the fourth to 

make it 31-14 before Union began to rally back. Mounting a 10-play, 

80-yard drive, Union pulled within 31-21 as Brinkley hit Kyle Callahan 

(Covington, Ky.) for a 16-yard scoring pass with 6:27 remaining. 

Shorter appeared as if it was going to ice the game as Gonzalez 

attempted a 20-yard fi eld goal, but Cain Smith (Lafayette, Ga.) 

blocked it and Ty Harris (Monroe, Ga.) picked it up and returned it to 

the Shorter 14. On the next play, Brinkley and Callahan hooked up 

again, making it 31-27 with 1:24 to play. The PAT was no good. 

Union attempted an onside kick, but Shorter recovered it on the 

Union 37. However, the Hawks went three and out and had to punt 

with 28 seconds remaining. Gonzalez’ punt appeared to be heading 

toward the end zone, but the ball took a Shorter bounce and went 

out of bounds at the 1-yard line. 

The Bulldogs tried to pull out a miracle, attempting to latteral its 

way to a score on the fi nal play. Yet, Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville, 

Ky.) ended up being downed in the end zone to give Shorter a 

safety, making the fi nal 33-27.
