Looking to Take the Series Lead 

The Bulldogs head into this week’s matchup 

with West Virginia Tech with the series tied at 

a game apiece. Both teams having won on their 

own home fields. 

In 2006, Union came up a yard short of tying 

and possibly winning the game as the Bears 

held on for the 43-37 decision. Last year, Union 

racked up nearly 550 yards passing en route to 

the 50-13 decision.

Bulldogs Not Fared Well in W.Va. 

Union doesn’t have a very good track record 

against teams from West Virginia, posting a 

2-7 all-time record. Also, the Bulldogs are 

just 1-4 in games played in West Virginia. The 

lone victory came in 1995 when the Bulldogs 

defeated West Virginia State 36-12. (By the way, 

the 1995 season marked that last time Union 

had a winning season.)

Union is currently enjoying a 6-game win 

streak, dating back to the 2007 season. In fact, 

the Bulldogs have won 8 of its last 10 contests. 

The last time Union collected 6 wins in a row 

came during the 1995 campaign when it posted 

a 6-game win streak. Ironically, 1995 was the 

last time Union recorded a winning record. 

However, the longest winning streak 

in program history is 7 games, which was 

accomplished twice. The first time came in 

1933-34. Union won the final 4 games of 

the 1933 season and the first 3 of the 1934 

campaign. During those 2 seasons, Union 

posted a combined 9-1-3 record and went 

undefeated in 1934 at 5-0-2. The last time 

occurred when Union won its final 4 games 

in 1992 and the first 3 contests in 1993. 

Union went a combined 13-7 during those 2 

seasons, winning a share of the 1992 MSC 

championship. 

Moving On Up ... In the Polls 

For the third week in a row, Union is 

ranked in the NAIA Football Top 25 Coaches’ 

Poll, moving up 4 spots to No. 12 this week. 

The Bulldogs garnered 226 total points in 

the voting, 14 more than No. 13 UVa-Wise 

- making Union the highest-ranked team from 

the MSC. 

This is the highest Union has been ranked 

since ending the 1995 season ranked 16th. 

When Union cracked the Top 25 on Sept. 

15 by coming in 18th, it marked the first 

appearance in the polls by a Bulldog football 

squad since the 1996 Preseason Poll. Union

then moved up to No. 16 in the Sept. 22 Top 25 

Poll. 

Clock management - Bulldog style 

During the first 3 games of the season, Union 

has won the time-management battle, holding 

the ball for over 34 minutes twice and for nearly 

32 minutes in the 23-13 win at Faulkner (Ala.) 

on Sept. 20. 

In the 27-21 at Lambuth, Union had the ball 

for 34 minutes and 5 seconds. Against Malone, 

the Bulldogs topped that with a 34:21 time of 

possession. 

However, against Malone, Union only 

had possession for 12:15 in the first half. 

The Bulldogs took over in the third quarter, 

controlling the ball for 12:57 in the period 

alone. Union held the ball for 22:06 in the 

second half and allowed Malone to get off a 

total of 18 offensive plays. 

Against Georgetown, Union did not 

finish with the lead in time of possession as 

Georgetown held the ball for 31:20. However, 

the Tigers had the ball for 18:18 in the first half 

- and 11:11 in the first quarter alone, but the 

Bulldogs ate up the clock in the second half by 

hanging on to the ball for 16:58. 

On the season, Union is averaging 32:08 in 

time of possession. 

Making Second-Half Adjustments 

Union owns the third quarter this season, 

outscoring its opponents 34-0. The Bulldogs 

hold a slight edge in the first half, outscoring 

opponents 38-35 in the first and 31-28 in the 

second for an overall first-half edge of 69-63. 

However, Union has yet to surrender a 

point in the third quarter. A big reason for this 

is due to the fact that the Bulldogs average 

9:07 in time of possession in the third quarter. 

TRANSLATION: Opponents can’t score if they 

don’t have the ball. 

Opponents do hold the advantage in the 

fourth quarter, outscoring Union 27-17. Yet, 

Union has owned at least a 7-point lead going 

into the fourth quarter. Versus Lambuth, the 

score was 24-7 (27-21 final), Union led 35-28 

heading into the fourth against Malone (that 

was the final score), the Bulldogs led 16-7 at 

Faulkner to start the fourth before winning 23- 

13, and Union was up 28-21 to begin the final 

period in the 35-28 win over Georgetown.

Smith Collects MSC Defensive POW Honors 

It’s beginning to become part of the weekly 

routine at Union as LB Marekus Smith (SR, 5- 

10, 196) was named the Mid-South Conference 

Defensive Player of the Week. 

In the four weeks that the conference has 

handed out Players of the Week awards, the 

Bulldogs have garnered 5 of out of the 12 

possible honors. 

Smith received this week’s honor after 

recording 8 total tackles (6 solos) and a sack 

of 11 yards in the 35-28 win over then-No. 18 

Georgetown (Ky.). Smith also intercepted a 

pass, returning it 34 yards to set up the eventual 

game-winning touchdown.

By Air Or By Land - UC Getting It Done 

By and large, Union has been a pass-oriented 

team in recent years. However, judging by the 

first 4 games, things could be changing. 

Union tallied 1519 total yards on offense 

with 815 through the air and 705 on the ground 

- one of the more balanced attacks Union has 

displayed in some time. In the 23-13 win at 

Faulkner (Ala.), the Bulldogs racked up 334 

yards rushing and 517 yards in total offense. 

The last time Union ran for more than 300 

yards came in a 57-27 win over Bethel (Tenn.) 

on Oct. 11, 2003, as the Bulldogs amassed 377

MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK 

Campbellsville University’s Greg Fountain, Union College’s Marekus Smith and Lambuth University’s Ryan Nanney 

have been named Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week, the conference announced on Sunday. 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Fountain rushed for 255 yards and fi ve touchdowns to earn MSC Offensive Player of the Week. The Owensboro, Ky., 

senior running back set a program record with 40 rushes as he helped the Tigers to a 57-47 win over West Virginia 

University Institute of Technology. Campbellsville is 1-3 overall and tied atop the West Division at 1-0. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Smith, a native of Lithonia, Ga., recorded eight tackles -- six solo -- and had a sack to earn Mid-South Defensive Player 

of the Week. The senior linebacker also recorded an interception which set up the Bulldogs game-winning touchdown in 

a 35-28 win over Georgetown College. No. 16-ranked Union is 4-0 overall and tied for the East Division lead at 1-0. 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Nanney was a perfect 3-for-3 on fi eld goals and made all six point after attempts to earn MSC Special Teams Player of 

the Week. The Dresden, Tenn., junior placekicker connected on fi eld goals of 27, 38 and 27 yards in the Eagles’ 51-40 

win over No. 7-ranked University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Lambuth improves to 3-2 on the season with the win.

But against Georgetown (Ky.), Union had 

253 passing yards and only 97 rushing yards. 

A big reason for the balanced offensive attack 

improved and experienced offensive line. 

The Bulldogs o-line is anchored by LT 

Quintin Borders (SO, 6-6, 318), who was a First 

Team All-MSC East selection as a freshman in 

2007. C Brock Evans (JR, 6-1, 292) has proven 

to be a solid contributor on the line as has RG 

Joe Mullinax (SO, 6-0, 317). 

Currently, Evans is the lone junior on the 2- 

deep at any of the o-line positions and there are 

no seniors to speak of. Translation: the Bulldog 

offensive should be strong for seasons to come. 

Manning the line 

Union has done a good job owning the line of 



scrimmage on both sides of the ball. 

The Bulldog offensive line has only 

surrendered a total of 8.0 sacks for 42 yards. 

Meanwhile, Union has sacked its opponents 

10 times for 81 yards. In addition, Union has 

recorded 30 tackles for a loss of 123 yards. 

DL Arthur Johnson (JR, 5-10, 300), DL 

Patrick Burke (SR, 5-8, 213), DL Michael Gold 

(JR, 6-3, 248), DL Jason Hammontree (SO, 

6-0, 249) and DL Quentin Penn (R-FR, 6-0, 

232) have done a good job getting pressure 

upfront and creating avenues for the Bulldog 

linebacking corps to operate. Johnson, Burke, 

Gold, Hammontree and Penn have combined 

for 49 total tackles, but the quartet has 9.5 TFL 

and 3.5 sacks. 

LBs definitely backing up the D-Line 

The LB trio of Willie Williams (SR, 6-4, 

220), Marekus Smith (SR, 5-11, 196) and 

Depaul Peyton (SR, 5-10, 222) are taking 

advantage of the opportunities the defensive 

line is creating for them. The three have 

combined for 91 tackles, 13.0 TFL of 44 yards, 

6.0 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, 

1 INT, 5 pass breakups and 2 blocked kicks. 

21 Is Generally the Limit 

When determining whether Union will 

be victorious or not, 21 has been the magic 

number. Under head coach Tommy Reid, Union 

is 16-5 when holding an opponent to 21 or 

fewer points. The last time Union lost a game 

when limiting a team to 21 or fewer came on 

Nov. 11, 2006, when UVa-Wise posted a 21-6 

win. 

Meanwhile, Union is 10-42 under Reid when 

opponents score 22 or more points. 

Thus far this season, Union has registered 

2 wins when allowing more than 21 points 

- recording identical 35-28 decisions against 

Malone (Ohio) and Georgetown (Ky.). The last 

time Union had 2 or more victories in a season 

in which the opponent scored 22 or more was 

2005. The Bulldogs went 4-6 that season and 

had the wins in which the opponent netted at 

least 22 points (44-33 win over Belhaven, 35-34 

win at Cumberlands, 47-28 win vs. UVa-Wise). 

Running Up the Charts 

RB Terence Pollock (JR, 5-10, 223) had a 

career day against Faulkner (Ala.) on Sept. 20 

as he racked up 198 rushing yards and 2 TDs on 

20 carries for his 8th 100-yard rushing game of 

his career and 2nd in 3 games this season. His 

first carry of the day was 97-yard TD gallop that 

immediately made him the 4th leading rusher in 

program history. 

Pollock followed that with another 2-TD 

performance against Georgetown (Ky.), but he 

only garnered 76 yards in the 35-28 win. 

Currenly, Pollock has 1,849 career rushing 

yards and 16 TDs on 416 attempts, overtaking 

Dominic Yuille for 3rd place. He also only 

needs 151 more yards to become the 3rd 

running back to amass 2,000 yards in a career 

- joining Scott Russell and Clarence Mackey on 

that list. 

In 2006, Pollock had arguably the best 

rushing season for a freshman in program

history as his 655 yards on the ground ranked 

him then 11th for most yards in a season. As 

a sophomore, he became the 9th player in 

program history to rush for 1,000 yards in a 

career during the 21-14 win over Cumberland 

on Oct. 6. Pollock finished the 2007 season with 

718 yards on 178 carries. His 718 rushing yards 

were the 7th-most by a running back in program 

history. 

With last week’s 198-yard peformance, 

Pollock has rushed for over 100 yards 8 times 

in his career. In the 2008 season opener, Pollock 

ran for 133 yards on 23 carries and 1 TD. He 

ran for 111 yards and 2 TDs on 24 carries 

against UVa-Wise on Oct. 27, 2007. On Oct. 

20, 2007, at Frostburg State, he recorded his 

5th 100-yard game of his career as he ran for 

101 yards on 17 carries. On Sept. 22, 2007, at 

Pikeville, Pollock rushed for over 100 yards for 

the 4th time his career. He ran for 127 yards on 

23 carries with a long of 19 yards. 

Pollock became the first player since Scott 

Russell in 1994 to rush for 100 or more yards in 

three consecutive games in 2006. He galloped 

for 158 at Belhaven (Miss.) on Oct. 7, 2006; 

131 yards at Lambuth (Tenn.) on Oct. 14, 2006; 

and 127 yards against Frostburg State on Oct.

After earning NAIA Defensive Player of 

the Week honors for his 13-tackle, 2-sack 

performance at Lambuth, LB Willie Williams 

(SR, 6-4, 220) continued that pace as he made 

14 stops, 1.5 TFL, 1 sack and blocked punt in 

the 35-28 win over Malone. 

However, he only managed just 8 total stops 

and 1.5 sacks at Faulkner (Ala.). Yet, Williams 

picked up the pace against Georgetown with 15 

total tackles and a 0.5 sack. 

Williams has 50 total tackles, 8.0 TFL and 

5.0 sacks for an average of 12.5 stops, 2.0 TFL 

and 1.25 sacks per game. 

At his current pace, Williams could make 

a run at the single-season records for tackles, 

TFLs and sacks. The single-season marks are 

143 tackles (set by Patrick O’Neal in 2007), 

24.0 TFL (set by Brandon Webb in 2006) and 

17.0 sacks (set by Burley Burkhart in 1985).

GAME NOTES 

Catching Up with Callahan 

WR Kyle Callahan (JR, 6-0, 197) has hauled 

in a 16 passes for 189 yards and 4 TDs this 

season, moving him into the Top 10 all-time in 

receptions. He currently has 92 career catches 

for 1,278 yards and 14 TDs, tying him with 

Mike Jones for 8th. He needs 4 more catches 

to put him in 5th place all-time as Kevin 

Bradshaw had 93 career receptions, David 

Fairbanks 94 and Ernie Samuel 95. for 7th. 

Also, the Covington, Ky. native is 8 catches 

shy of becoming only the 5th player in program 

history to haul in a 100 passes. 

In addition, Callahan needs 364 receiving 

yards for second place. To overtake the top spot, 

Callahan would have to amass 805 receiving 

yards as Pete Greene holds that mark at 2,082. 

Callahan has a shot at the single-season and 

career TD receptions records. He currently 

has 4 TDs on the season and 14 to his credit, 

needing only 3 to surpass the mark of 16, which 

is held by Greene and Courtney Elesby. Elesby 

set the single-season mark at 9 in 2005. 

Last season, Callahan became the 14th player 

in program history to amass 40 receptions in 

a season when he hauled in 60 passes for 816 

yards and 8 TDs. 

In addition, he was just the 3rd player in 

program history to amass at least 60 receptions 

in a season and 4th to rack up over 800 

receiving yards.

Pollock Among MSC Leaders, Chasing 1,000 

RB Terence Pollock (JR, 5-10, 223) is second 

in the Mid-South Conference in rushing with an 

average of 119.0 yards per game. Through the 

first 4 contests, Pollock has racked up 476 yards 

and 5 TDs on 83 carries. 

At his present pace, Pollock could shatter the 

single-season rushing mark of 1,158 yards set 

by Clarence Mackey back in 1993. To eclipse 

Mackey’s record, Pollock will need to average 

97.5 yards per game this rest of season. In 

addition, Pollock needs to average 74.9 yards 

per game to become just the 3rd player in 

program history to rush for a 1,000 yards in a 

season. 

Setting the Pace in the MSC 

In addition to RB Terence Pollock (JR, 5-10, 

223) being second in the Mid-South Conference 

in rushing, the Bulldogs have a number of 

players atop or near the top in several statistical 

categories. 

QB Mike Brinkley (R-FR, 6-1, 161) is 7th in 

Total Offense, averaging 207.5 yards per game. 

Brinkley is also 6th in passing with a 203.5 

ypg average. 

RB Ben Kelly (JR, 6-0, 192) is 7th in

Converting Turnovers Into Points 

Union won the turnover battle in its season 

opener as Lambuth coughed the ball up 4 times 

(2 fumbles, 2 INTs) while Union didn’t lose the 

ball once. The Bulldogs lost the turnover battle 

against Malone, turning it over twice to the 

Pioneers’ 1. However, Union scored 7 points off 

Malone’s miscues while Malone got nothing. 

The Bulldogs made the most of Lambuth’s 

miscues, cashing in the 4 turnovers for 21 

points. 

In the 23-13 win at Faulkner, Union lost 

the turnover battle as the Eagles did not turn 

the ball over once while the Bulldogs threw 1 

interception. However, nothing came of the pick 

as it came just prior to the half. 

Versus Georgetown, both teams turned the 

ball over twice resulting in 7 points for each. 

In Union’s last 9 games, Union has converted

Union has played in 5 overtime games and is 

2-3 in such contests. 

The Bulldogs won their first 2 extended 

period games, defeating Cumberland (Ky.) 

College 24-23 in 1996 and Pikeville (Ky.) 

College 17-16 in 2001. However, since then, 

Union has lost its last 3 overtime games. In 

2002, Union lost 32-29 to NCAA Division II 

Concord (W.Va.) College. The Bulldogs lost 

9-3 at Campbellsville (Ky.) University in 2003. 

Union’s last overtime game was in 2004 when it 

fell 32-25 to Pikeville. 

Kicking FGs Begins with ‘J’ 

When P/K Jacob Appleby (FR, 5-10185) 

made 3 field goals Saturday at Faulkner (Ala.), 

it mark the seventh time in program history 

the feat had been accomplished. Appleby is the 

fourth player to boot 3 field goals in a game, 

and coincidentally, all 4 players have something 

in common - their first names begin with the 

letter ‘J’. Appleby joined James Hager, Junior 

Distefano and Jeremy Macejewski on this 

exclusive list. Macejewski accomplished the 

feat three times during his career. 

Special Teams Truly Becoming a Specialty 

Union has had a history of big plays on 

special teams. Whether it’s big returns, blocked 

kicks or quality punting, the Bulldogs have 

shined on special teams in years past and 2008 

doesn’t look any different. 

P/K Jacob Appleby (FR, 5-9, 155) had an 

impressive debut as he made 2 of 3 field-goal 

attemps in the season opener. In addition, he 

was a perfect 3-for-3 on PATs as he accounted 

for 9 of Union’s 27 points. He add 5 PATs 

against Malone. Against Faulkner, Appleby had 

3 FGs and 2 PATs, giving him 25 points on the 

year. He was a perfect 5-for-5 on PATs against 

Georgetown. Also, he’s averaging 58.6 yards 

per kickoff with 1 touchback. 

WR Chris Thomas (FR, 5-11, 162) is proving 

to be a dangerous threat returning kicks and 

punts, averaging 24.8 yards per kick return and 

8.8 yards per punt return. 

P/K Chad Boyington (FR, 5-9, 155) is only 

averaging 28.3 yards per punt, but 5 of his 18 

punts have pinned opponents inside their 20. 

On the flipside, opponents have yet to make 

a field goal against the Bulldogs. Lambuth 

attempted a 50-yarder but missed it. Malone 

tried from 51 yards, but it was blocked by LB 

Marekus Smith (SR, 5-10, 196), and DL Jason 

Hammontree (SO, 6-0, 249) blocked Faulkner’s 

40-yard attempt.

Waters and the other nine Union 

College seniors enjoyed their ‘day’ to 

the fullest Saturday as the Bulldogs 

registered a 50-13 rout over the 

visiting West Virginia Tech Bears in 

Mid-South Conference East action. 

A week after becoming the first 

player to throw over 400 yards in 

a game, Waters (McDonough, Ga.) 

became the first Bulldog to throw 

over 500 yards as he completed 34- 

of-57 passes for 518 yards and four 

touchdowns. The 34 completions tied 

the single-game record while the four 

touchdowns equaled Waters’ career 

high. 

Union (3-7 overall, 1-3 MSC East) 

dominated the line of scrimmage, 

outgaining West Virginia Tech 565- 

185 in total offense. 

Waters wasn’t the only senior to 

have a big day in the Bulldogs’ final 

home game of the season. Ryan 

Chambers (McDonough, Ga.) hauled 

in six passes for 141 yards and two 

scores, while Shawn Kelly (Cold 

Springs, Ky.) caught six passes for 76 

yards. Running back David Hammer 

(Edmonton, Ky.) scored his first 

career touchdown as he ran for 13 

yards on five carries. 

Meanwhile, senior linebacker 

Patrick O’Neal (Lula, Ga.) posted 

double-digit tackles for the eighth 

time this season has he made 15 total 

stops with 2.5 going for a loss of four 

yards. He now has 123 tackles on the 

year. 

Although it was “Senior Day,” one 

freshman had a career day as well. 

James Hager (Micanopy, Fla.) tied 

the school record for field goals made 

in a game with three. Add to that five 

PATs, and Hager scored 14 points on 

the day. 

Up 9-0 in the second, Terence 

Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) scored on 

a 2-yard run to put Union ahead 16-0 

with 7:48 left in the half. Hammer 

added a 2-yard scoring yard while 

Waters hit Chambers for a 68-yard 

touchdown pass as the Bulldogs took 

a 30-0 into the intermission. In the 

third, a pair of Hager field goals put 

Union up 36-0. 

Chris Anderson put West Virginia 

Tech (1-9 overall, 0-4 MSC East) 

on the board when he returned an 

interception 87 yards for a score, 

making it 36-7 with 17 seconds left 

in the third. 

Waters hit Pollock out on the flat, 

and the Bulldog tailback raced for 

the end zone for the 47-yard score, 

stretching the margin to 43-7 with 

9:06 to go in the game. 

West Virginia Tech then mounted 

a six-play, 67-yard scoring drive, 

capped by a James Thorne 30-yard 

pass to Rashard Gould with 6:55 

remaining. 

A 33-yard scoring pass to P.J. 

Burrowes (Middlesboro, Ky.) capped 

the scoring as Union won 50-13.

JACKSON, Tenn. - Union College shook off some voodoo 

Saturday as it opened the 2008 season with a 27-21 victory at 

Lambuth (Tenn.) University, marking the fi rst time since 1997 Union 

has defeated Lambuth. 

Lambuth (0-2 overall) took the early lead, marching 87 yards in 10 

plays to grab a 7-0 lead. Marquis Williams scored on a 27-yard run 

with 7:02 remaining in the fi rst. 

Union (1-0 overall) struck twice in the second quarter en route to 

a 14-7 halftime lead. At the 9:06 mark, Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) 

hit Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.) for a 17-yard touchdown pass to 

tie the game at 7-7. After a Lambuth fumble, the Bulldogs found the 

end zone in no time. Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) capped a 

four-play, 20-yard drive with a 4-yard plunge as Union seized a 14-7 

advantage with 6:03 left in the half. 

Jacob Appleby (Harvest, Ala.) hit a 20-yard fi eld goal at the 11:15 

mark in the third to make it 17-7. Midway through the third, Brinkley 

and Callahan hooked up again; this time from 10-yards out as Union 

built a 24-7 cushion. 

Early in the fourth, Lambuth cut the margin to 24-14, but Appleby 

booted an 18-yard fi eld goal to push the lead to 27-14 with 5:38 

remaining. 

Lambuth caught a break as it blocked a punt and ended up scoring 

to pull within 27-21 with 2:23 to play. 

However, the Bulldogs held on for the win, the fi rst at Lambuth 

since 1994.

Union narrowly outgained Lambuth 341-337. The Bulldogs had a 

balanced attack with 147 yards rushing and 194 yards passing. 

Offensively for Union, Brinkley completed 25-of-40 passes for 194 

yards and two scores. Callahan hauled in eight passes for 85 yards 

and two touchdowns, while Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville, Ky.) had six 

receptions for 60 yards. 

Pollock recorded his seventh 100-yard rushing game of his career, 

racking up 133 yards on 23 carries. In addition, Pollock now has 

1,506 career rushing yards. 

Defensively, newcomer and senior Willie Williams (Miami, Fla.) 

had an impressive debut with 12 total tackles, 2.5 for a loss, two 

sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. 

For Lambuth, Adam Wiese completed 13-of-19 passes for 107 

yards and two touchdowns. Wiese also led the Eagles in rushing 

with 51 yards on eight carries. Cedric Fisher led Lambuth defensively 

with 13 stops and one blocked punt.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College put together a dominating 

second-half performance to upset visiting No. 24 Malone (Ohio) 

College 35-28 Saturday, extending the Bulldogs win streak to four 

games. 

Union is off to its fi rst 2-0 start since 1994 when it went 7-3. 

Malone is now 0-1. 

Trailing 28-21 at the half, Union struggled offensively during the 

fi rst 30 minutes. The Bulldogs had the ball for only 12 minutes and 

15 seconds and amassed just 91 yards in total offense. Meanwhile, 

the Pioneers ate up 17:45 off the clock in the fi rst while racking up 

285 yards. 

But it was a different story in the second half. 

The Bulldogs dominated the third quarter, hanging on to the ball 

for 12:59 in the period. Taking the opening kick of the half, Union ate 

8:19 off the clock while march 65 yards in 15 plays in tying the game 

at 28-28. Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) hit diving Kyle Callahan (Covington, 

Ky.) in the left side of the end zone at the 6:40 mark. 

After forcing Malone to go three plays and out, Union continued its 

ball-control offense. Taking possession with 5:05 on the clock, the 

Bulldogs mounted an 11-play, 77-yard drive. Brinkley capped the 

march with a 19-yard scoring pass to Rolando Dyer (Lawrenceburg, 

Ga.) for a 35-28 lead with 27 seconds remaining in the third. 

Union continued to eat up the clock in the fourth. After reeling off 

47 offensive plays in the fi rst half, Malone had the ball just three 

times in the second half with drives of three, seven and eight plays. 

With 5:16 remaining, the Bulldogs got the ball on their 23-yard line 

and appeared to be on the move to seal the win with a fi eld goal. 

Instead, Union just chipped away at the clock, executing 11 plays in 

running out the clock to capture the 35-28 victory. 

Union had the ball for 34:21, marking the second game in a row 

it had over 34 minutes in time of possession. In spite of the large 

edge in time of possession, Malone outgained Union in total offense 

353-297. 

Despite throwing two fi rst-half interceptions, Brinkley fi nished the 

game 17-of-25 for 170 yards and four touchdowns. Callahan tied a 

22-year-old record with three touchdown catches as he pulled down 

four passes for 39 yards. He joins Albert Pellingrino as the only 

Bulldogs with three touchdown receptions in a game as Pellingrino 

accomplished the feat against Lambuth (Tenn.) University in 1986. 

Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) had just 69 yards rushing but 

58 came in the second half. Darrell Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) helped 

out with 23 yards on four carries. Ben Kelly (Cold Springs, Ky.) had 

a good all-round day seven yards rushing and 53 yards receiving 

on six catches. 

Senior Willie Williams (Miami, Fla.) had 14 total stops, a sack 

and a blocked punt to lead the Bulldog defense. Marekus Smith 

(Lithonia, Ga.) and Jeremy Agbomi (Cincinnati, Ohio) each had eight 

total tackles with Smith recording 2.5 tackles for a loss and forcing 

a fumble.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Terence Pollock ran for a career-high 198 

yards and scored twice as visiting No. 18 Union College held off 

Faulkner (Ala.) University 23-13 Saturday. 

Pollock’s (Orange Park, Fla.) fi rst carry of the day was one for the 

highlight reel as he galloped 97 yards for a touchdown on Union’s 

fi rst play from scrimmage. After the PAT, Union led 7-0 with 10:02 

remaining in the fi rst. 

The 97-yard run is the longest run in Pollock’s career. Prior to this 

season, Pollock had not had a run longer than 26 yards. Howver, he 

had a 33-yard run in the win at Lambuth (Tenn.) Universty on Sept. 

6 and now a 97-yard gallop. 

Pollock’s long sprint is close to the longest run in Bulldog history, 

but Dayna Overton had 99-yard touchdown run against Tiffi n (Ohio) 

University in 1998. 

The junior running back fi nished the day with 198 yards on 20 

carries, just 16 yards shy of James Fletcher’s single-game record of 

214, which he set against Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1985. 

As a team, Union rushed for 334 yards. The Bulldogs entered the 

game with 274 rushing yards. Union only rushed for more than 200 

yards once in 2007 (214 versus Campbellsville (Ky.) University on 

Oct. 13, 2007). The last time Union ran for more than 300 yards 

came in a 57-27 win over Bethel (Tenn.) College on Oct. 11, 2003, 

as the Bulldogs amassed 377 yards on the ground. 

Union outgained Faulkner 517-167 in total offense. Mike Brinkley 

(Anthony, Fla.) completed 12-of-30 passes for 183 yards. He had 

one interception, but it came just prior to the half and didn’t amount 

to anything. Darrell Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) helped out with 48 yards 

rushing on six carries, while Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville, Ky.) caught 

three passes for 66 yards and ran for 33 yards on one carry. 

Freshman Jacob Appleby (Harvest, Ala.) tied a school record with 

three fi eld goals as he accounted for 11 points in the 10-point victory. 

Appleby connected on fi eld goals of 22 and 34 yards in the fi rst 

half as Union built a 13-0 lead with 10:55 left in the half. 

Just before the half, Faulkner cracked scoring column just before 

the half when Phillip Moore scampered 21 yards for a touchdown 

with 46 seconds on the clock, making it 13-7 at the half. 

With 2:26 to go in the third, Appleby booted another 22-yard fi eld 

goal to up the margin to 16-7. 

Union appeared to be on its way to extend its lead early the fourth 

as it had the ball fi rst and 10 on the Faulkner 15. Twice the Bulldogs 

got the ball into the end zone only to have the play nullifi ed by a 

penalty. Facing fourth and 31 at the Faulkner 36, Union punted and 

pinned the Eagles on their 12-yard line. 

Faulkner turned the ball over on downs on its own 16, and Pollock 

scored on the very next play to put Union up 23-7 with 6:23 

remaining. 

On the ensuing drive, Faulkner marched 64 yards in nine plays for 

a touchdown. Moore hit Josh Cooper for an 8-yard pass. The Eagles 

went for two on the PAT, but the run failed to leave the score 23-13 

with 4:09 left.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - No. 16 Union College’s magical season 

continued Saturday with a 35-28 Mid-South Conference East victory 

over visiting No. 18 Georgetown (Ky.) College. 

The win improved Union to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in MSC East play, 

while Georgetown is now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the MSC East. 

Tied 21-21 at the half, Union forced Georgetown to go three plays 

and out on the opening drive of the second half. The Bulldogs then 

moved the ball 70 yards in 12 plays, eating up six minutes and eight 

seconds off the clock en route to the go-ahead score. 

A pass interference call against the Tigers gave Union the ball on 

the Georgetown 9. Two plays later, Terence Pollock (Orange Park, 

Fla.) punched the ball in from 4 yards out, making it 28-21 with 7:21 

left in third. 

Early in the fourth, Marekus Smith (Lithonia, Ga.) picked off a Mike 

Lewis pass and returned it to the Georgetown 26. But a personal 

foul penalty against Union moved the Bulldogs back to the Tiger 41. 

The penalty turned out to be a non-issue as Mike Brinkley 

(Anthony, Fla.) hit a wide open Rolando Dyer (Lawrenceburg, Ga.) 

down the middle of the fi eld for a 41-yard touchdown pass, putting 

Union us 35-21 with 13:16 to play. 

Georgetown answered on its next possession. Aided by a 42-yard 

kickoff return by A.J. Brooks, the Tigers needed only six plays to 

go 52 yards for a score. Lewis capped the drive by hitting Kaelin 

Ammons for a 24-yard strike with 10:19 remaining, cutting the 

margin to 35-28. 

The Bulldogs went into ball-control mode, eating up a lot of the 

clock during the fi nal 10 minutes of the game. However, Georgetown 

got the ball back with 44 seconds left on its own 27 and got within 

striking distance. A personal foul on Union with under 10 seconds 

to play put the ball on the Union 28-yard line. However, Terry Young 

(Orange Park, Fla.) picked off Lewis’ pass on the 5-yard line to end 

the game and seal the 35-28 Bulldog victory. 

With the loss, Georgetown dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the 

MSC East. 

Georgetown owned the time of possession in the fi rst half, holding 

the ball for 18:18. However, in the second half, Union held possession 

for 8:00 in the third quarter and 8:58 in the fourth. 

Union outgained Georgetown 350-322 in total offense. Brinkley 

had his best game of the season as he completed 17-of-22 passes 

for 253 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. 

Dyer hauled in six passes for 98 yards and two scores, all of which 

are career highs for the sophomore. Pollock had a decent day as he 

ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He also caught 

one pass for seven yards. 

Defensively, Willie Williams (Miami, Fla.) led the way with a 

season-high 15 total stops with a half sack and three quarterback 

hurries. Smith helped out with eight total tackles, one sack, a pass 

breakup and an interception.
