(2-5, 0-2 MSC East)
Looking for some revenge
Union will be seeking some payback as it
visits Frostburg State on Saturday. In last year’s
meeting, the Bulldogs held a 3-0 lead with
just over 2 minutes to play when the Bobcats
blocked a punt and returned it for what proved
to be the game-winning touchdown.
The 2006 showdown proved to be a real
offensive struggle. Frostburg State outgained
Union 255-175 in total offense, and neither
team had the ball inside the opponent’s 20-yard
line. Additionally, Union punted the ball 9 times
with Frostburg State punting 5 times.
Waters’ aerial assault on record book
QB Joey Waters (5-11, 207, SR) continues to
rewrite the Bulldog record.
In last week’s 31-14 win over Campbellsville,
Waters threw for a 330 yards on 25-of-38
passes in becoming the program’s all-time
leading passer with 6,627 career passing yards.
He surpasses Lee Worley who amassed 6,515
career passing yards.
Through the first 7 games of the season, Waters
has completed 164-of-269 passes for 1,963
yards and 17 touchdowns.
Waters now holds four major career passing
records and is closing in on several singleseason
marks. Here is a list of the career and
season records Waters is chasing and his current
status:
Starting to convert turnovers into points
The Union defense has done well in causing
turnovers as opponents have turned the ball
over 18 times during the first 7 games, while
Union has turned the ball over 18 times.
Union has had issues cashing those turnovers
into points. The Bulldogs have turned the opponents’
18 miscues into just 64 points, while the
opponents have scored 51 points off of Union’s
18 turnovers.
In the past two games, Union has cashed in
its opponents’ 5 turnovers for 28 points, scoring
4 TDs. Meanwhile, the last two opponents were
only able to come away with one turnover but it
was converted into 7 points.
UC defense improving?
For the second week in a row time all
season, Union held an opponent under 300
yards in total offense. On Oct. 6, Union limited
Cumberland to just 257 yards in total offense in
the 21-14 win, while holding Campbellsville to
249 total yards in the Oct. 13 31-14 victory.
Last week’s game also marked the fourth
time - and third in a row, that Union held an
opponent to under 100 yards passing. That
trend could continue against Frostburg State as
the Bobcats are primarily a running team with
2007 UNION BULLDOG FOOTBALL
957 rushing yards on the season and just 467
passing yards.
The 249 yards in total offense allowed to
Campbellsville was the lowest total Union’s
held an opponent this season.
Scoring edge to Union
Union appears to have a solid scoring
advantage heading into this week’s matchup
against Frostburg State. The Bobcats have
scored just 64 points all season - averaging
10.7 points per game, while Union has scored
91 points in the first half alone - 44 in the first
quarter and 47 in the second. On the season,
Union has tallied 165 total points for a 23.6
point-per-game average.
Campbellsville has just scored a total of 16
first-half points with 7 coming in the first and
9 in the second. The Bobcats have scored 26
points in the third quarter and 22 in the fourth.
Unbalanced scoring attack
Speaking of scoring, a high percentage of
Union’s touchdowns have come through the
air this season. Through the first 7 games,
Union has found the end zone 22 times with 17
coming through the air, 1 on a kick return and
1 on a fumble return. The Bulldogs have just
3 rushing touchdowns with 2 coming in last
week’s 31-14 win over Campbellsville.
RB Terence Pollock (5-9, 214, SO) leads
the team in rushing with 422 yards and had 8
rushing TDs in 2006. However, pounding the
ball into the end zone on the ground has been a
struggle for Union this season.
Meanwhile, Union’s opponents have scored
32 touchdowns - 15 rushing, 11 passing and 6
on interception/fumble returns.
Red-zone effectiveness
Union has been in the red zone 25 times
during the first 7 games of the season, scoring
18 times - a 72.0 scoring percentage. Union’s
opponents have entered the red zone 32 times,
but have scored 23 times - a 71.9 scoring
percentage.
However, Union has only scored 105 points
while its opponents has tallied 151 points. The
difference is that 5 of Union’s red-zone scores
have been field goals with opponents racking
up 21 TDs (2 of the PATs were no good) to go
along with just 2 field goals.
In last week’s 31-14 win, Union went 4 for
5 in the red zone, scoring 3 TDs and 1 FG. The
one failed trip ended with a missed 34-yard FG
attempt. Campbellsville was 1 of 3 in the red
zone, scoring on a 6-yard TD run.
Kelly charging up the receiving list
As a target for Waters, WR Shawn Kelly
(5-8, 175, SR) is on pace to break some singleseason
receiving and career records.
With 43 receptions this season, Kelly now
ranks 3rd on the all-time career receptions list.
To date, he has 110 career receptions for 1,286
yards, a 11.7 yard-per-reception average and 9
TDs. Kelly became the 4th player to amass 100
MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
The Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week are James Haley (defensive) and Randy Hippeard (offensive)
of Virginia-Wise, and Cumberland University’s Michael Hinson (special teams).
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hippeard, the signal caller for the 11th-ranked Cavaliers, passed for 259 yards on 13 completions and 5 touchdowns
during a 69-28 win over Belhaven College (2-5). The 6’3 junior from Stafford, Virginia, set the Wise career passing
record with 6,694 passing yards in his career. He is currently third in the NAIA in passing (306 yards/game) and total
offense (311 yards/game) and this is his second player of the week award this season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The MSC Defensive Player of the Week is UVa-Wise’s James Haley. The 5’11 sophomore from Gladys, Va. led the
Cavalier defense with 10 total tackles in their 41-point victory over Belhaven. Haley added 1.5 tackles for a total loss of
9 yards, as well as one sack and two pass break ups. Haley also returned a fumble 46 yards to set up a Cavalier score.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Michael Hinson of Cumberland University (Tenn.) is the special teams player of the week. The 6’0 sophomore punter/
kicker, originally from Smyra, Tennessee, had five punts for 190 total yards with a long of forty-seven. He had three kickoffs
for 175 yards (58 yards/kick) and nailed his only field goal of the day from 45 yards out. Cumberland (1-5) will travel
to Bethel College this Saturday for an 8:00 pm kick-off.
previous best season came during the 2005
season when he hauled in 31 passes for 398
yards and 4 TDs. He also became just the 13th
player in program history to amass 40 or more
receptions in a season. His 43 catches currently
rank 11th on the all-time single-season receptions
list.
O’Neal tackles record
www.ucbulldogs.com 2

2007 UNION BULLDOG FOOTBALL
LB Patrick O’Neal (6-1, 215, SR) has led
Union in tackles in all three seasons he’s
played, and he’s continued that theme during
the first three games of the year. He already has
87 total tackles, racking up school-record 20
in the season opener against University of the
Cumberlands (Ky.).
In nine games last season, O’Neal recorded
102 tackles and ranked third in the Mid-South
and sixth in the NAIA with 11.3 tackles per
game.
With his 102 tackles in 2006, O’Neal became
the first players since Herman Lovett in 2002 to
record 100 or more tackles in a season. Lovette
had 101 total tackles in 2002.
For his career, O’Neal has 334 total tackles.
John Luttrell holds the season and career tackle
records at 135 and 392, respectively. If O’Neal
is to break the career record, he will need to bag
59 more tackles - which would break the season
mark.
O’Neal leads the MSC in tackles and ranks
2nd in the NAIA with his 12.4 tackles per game.
Young not showing his youth
DB Terry Young (5-8, 160, FR) came up big
in the 31-14 over Campbellsville on Oct. 13. He
had just 6 total tackles (3 solos), but Young was
responsible for 2 turnovers deep into Union territory.
In the second quarter, he forced a fumble
at the Bulldog 10-yard line as Campbellsville
was threatening to score. The ensuing drive
resulted in a 10-play, 90-yard scoring march. In
the third, Campbellsville was driving and had
the ball at the Union 8 when Young intercepted
a pass at the goal line, preventing a Tiger score.
Littleton no little man
DB Josh Littleton (5-11, 185, SO) might’ve
had just 3 total tackles against Cumberland on
Oct. 6, but he arguably came up with two of the
biggest defensive plays of the game. With the
game scoreless in the second, Cumberland was
driving deep into Union territory when Littleton
picked off a Matt Eads pass at the goal line,
returning it 33 yards in setting up the Bulldogs’
first scoring drive of the game.
Late in the third with Union up 14-7, Littleton
forced a fumble which was recoverd by DB
Garry Barnett (5-9, 157, FR), setting up Union’s
final scoring drive of the game.
Running toward history
RB Terence Pollock (5-9, 214, SO) had arguably
the best rushing season for a freshman in
program history as his 655 yards on the ground
rank him 11th for most yards in a season. He
became the 9th player in program history to
rush for 1,000 yards in a career during the 21-
14 win over Cumberland on Oct. 6.
Thus far, Pollock has rushed for 422 yards
on 116 carries this season, averaging 3.6 yards
per carry. He currently has 1,077 career rushing
yards on 271 carries - an average of 3.9 yards
per carry.
UC’s big-time return men
DB Marekus Smith (5-10, 198, JR) set a
school record for the longest fumble recovery
return in the 41-17 loss at Shorter on Sept. 29
when he picked up a loose ball and sprinted 85
yards for a touchdown. The previous mark had
been 77 yards when Lionel Watkins returned a
fumble 77 yards for a score against Shorter on
Oct. 29, 2005.
This marked the second time this season that
a Union player had a return of 85 yards. In the
week 2 loss to Lambuth, DB/RS Antonio Dishman
(5-10, 164, SO) returned a kickoff 85 yards
for a touchdown. On the season, Dishman is
averaging 26.8 yards per kickoff return, ranking
him 13th in the NAIA.
Harris’ Pick Three
DB Ty Harris (5-11, 164, SO) tied the school
record for interceptions in a game with 3 vs.
Cumberlands in week one. He joins Lavarus
McCloud and C.J. Westerman as the only ones
in program history with a 3-INT game.
However, Harris is the first to have accomplished
the feat twice. He picked off three
passes in a 23-20 win at NCAA Division II
Chowan (N.C.) on Sept. 9, 2006.
Harris has 7 career INTs. The school record
is 12, which is held by Ernest Johnson.
Harris currently ranks 9th in the NAIA in
passes defended with 1.8 per game as he has
defended 7 passes (3 INTs, 4 pass breakups).
GAME NOTES
Sept. 1, 2007
GAME 1 - CUMBERLANDS
UNION 19
CUMBERLANDS 24
CORBIN, Ky. - A trio of Bulldogs netted milestones in Union
College’s season opener; however, it was the Patriots of University
of the Cumberlands (Ky.) that were celebrating as Cumberlands
pulled out the 24-19 decision Saturday to hang on to the Brass
Lantern at Campbell Field in Corbin, Ky.
Senior linebacker Patrick O’Neal (Lula, Ga.) tied the school record
for tackles in a game with 20, equaling the mark set by John Fey
which was set back in 1997. Sophomore defensive back Ty Harris
(Monroe, Ga.) picked off three passes to equal the school record.
Harris has now twice accomplished the feat and joins Lavarus
McCloud and C.J. Westerman as the only ones to achieve the milestone.
Senior quarterback Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) became
the first player in school history to amass 40-plus touchdown passes
as he now stands alone in that category with 41.
But it went all for naught as Cumberlands was able to hold strong
and pull out the five-point win to keep the Brass Lantern for the
second year in a row.
The contest was also a Mid-South Conference East showdown
as Cumberlands improved to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in MSC East play.
Union dropped to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Although Union won the turnover battle as Cumberlands coughed
it up four times to Union’s two, the last Bulldog miscue ultimately
proved costly.
Down 17-13 with just over four minutes to play, Brian Abshire
picked off a Waters pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown to
give Cumberlands a 24-13 cushion with 3:58 to play.
Not ready to give up, Union covered 60 yards in four plays to cut
into the deficit. Waters hooked up with Kyle Callahan (Covington,
Ky.) for a 33-yard touchdown pass, making it 24-19 with 2:58
remaining. The Bulldogs went for two but Waters was stopped just
short of the goal line.
Union, though, would not get a chance to take the lead. Cumberlands
took the ensuring possession and ran out the clock. A Kyle
King 24-yard run sealed the victory as it put the ball on the Union 8
with just over a minute left with one timeout left for Union.
Cumberlands outgained Union 323-312 in total offense with 248
yards coming on the ground. King led Cumberlands with 92 yards
and two scores on 25 carries. Bob Evans ran for 61 yards on five
carries. King also completed 5-of-15 passes for 75 yards.
Waters tossed 24-of-39 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns.
Callahan hauled in seven passes for 70 yards and two
scores, while Chris Collopy (Manchester, Ky.) pulled down six for 47
yards. Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) had four catches for 71 yards.
Union rushed for 63 yards with Lee Miles (Ross, Ohio) leading the
way with 52.
GAME 2 - LAMBUTH
Sept. 8, 2007
LAMBUTH 48
UNION 44
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Christening its new synthetic turf field,
Union College covered the field numerous times Saturday. However,
it was visiting Lambuth (Tenn.) University that left happy as it
outlasted Union 48-44.
A common belief is that play is faster on synthetic turf rather than
grass. And it sure appeared to be the case at Burch/Nau Field as
Union and Lambuth combined for 800 yards in total offense as well
as 440 kickoff return yardage.
The Eagles (1-1 overall) racked up 451 yards in total offense with
244 coming on the ground and 207 through the air. Meanwhile, the
Bulldogs (0-2 overall) compiled 349 yards in total offense with 335
coming through the air and just 14 rushing.
Senior quarterback Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) had a field
day as he completed 26-of-35 passes for 335 yards and four touchdowns.
More importantly, he had no interceptions.
Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) had a big day as he hauled in seven
passes for 139 yards and two scores. Kyle Callahan (Covington,
Ky.) pulled down a team-high eight catches for 79 yards, while
Rolondo Dyer (Lawrenceburg, Ga.) had three receptions for 51
yards and a touchdown.
Running back Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) led the Bulldog
ground attack with 43 yards on 20 carries as he also caught three
passes for 27 yards and a score.
Both teams came out firing on all cylinders. The two squads
combined for 28 first-quarter points and Lambuth held a 34-30 edge
at the half.
The Bulldogs took the opening possession of the second half
and drove the ball 57 yards on eight plays to take the lead. Waters
capped the drive with a nine-yard bootleg run, making it 37-34 with
11:30 to play in the third.
With 7:45 to go in the third, Kevin Haynes scored his third touchdown
of the game on a three-yard run, capping a nine-play, 65-yard
march by the Eagles. Following Chris McGinn’s PAT, Lambuth led
41-37.
Union reclaimed the lead just before time expired in the third.
With three seconds remaining, Waters hooked up with Pollock on
a screen play that covered 15 yards for the score, giving Union a
44-41 lead.
But on the ensuing kickoff, Allen Ervin returned the ball 50 yards
to the Union 38 to give the Eagles a short field to work with. Eight
plays later, Mark Kelley hit Clint Anderson in the back of the end
zone for a four-yard scoring strike as Lambuth claimed a 48-44 lead
with 10:53 to play.
GAME 3 - MALONE
Sept. 15, 2007
UNION 21
MALONE 55
CANTON, Ohio - Malone (Ohio) College reeled off 27 first-quarter
points as it defeated visiting Union College 55-21 Saturday at
Fawcett Stadium.
The Pioneers (2-1 overall) jumped out to a 20-0 lead before the
Bulldogs (0-3 overall) cracked the scoring column. Malone tacked
on Derek Deardorff 14-yard touchdown reception in the second as it
took a 34-7 cushion into the half.
Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) hit Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.)
for 10-yard touchdown pass at the 13:12 mark in the third, cutting
the margin to 34-14. However, Malone scored twice in the period to
stretch the margin to 48-14.
Waters hit Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) for a 5-yard scoring strike
in the fourth for the Bulldogs’ final tally. But it was too little, too late
as Malone recorded the 55-21 victory.
Malone outgained Union 479-247 in total offense. Malone racked
up 362 yards through the air and 117 on the ground, while Union
had 240 yards passing and only seven yards rushing.
Waters completed 20-of-34 passes for 221 yards and three scores
while having three passes picked off. Callahan pulled down six
GAME NOTES
GAME 4 - PIKEVILLE
Sept. 22, 2007
UNION 12
PIKEVILLE 34
PIKEVILLE, Ky. - Senior Joey Waters reached a couple more
milestones, and sophomore Terence Pollock recorded over 100
yards rushing, but it wasn’t enough as host Pikeville (Ky.) College
handed Union College a 34-12 Mid-South Conference East defeat
Saturday.
The loss extended the Bulldogs’ losing skid to 10 games as they
are now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in MSC East play, while the Bears
improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Waters (McDonough, Ga.) completed 23-of-43 passes for 260
yards and two touchdowns, making him the first player in program
history with 50 career scoring tosses. Also, he moved into second
place on the all-time passing list with 5,729 career passing yards,
overtaking Stanley Niece who amassed 5,524 passing yards. Waters
needs 787 more yards to become the all-time leading passer.
Lee Worley sits atop the list with 6,515 passing yards.
Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) had his best day rushing the ball this
season as he galloped for 127 yards on 23 carries.
However, it wasn’t enough as Pikeville’s defense bent but didn’t
break in posting the 22-point decision.
Union amassed more first downs than Pikeville with a 24-19 edge.
And the Bears only outgained the Bulldogs 383-372 in total offense.
Still, Union was unable to put points on the board in large part due
to turnovers.
The Bulldogs fumbled the ball away three times and had two
passes intercepted. Add to that the fact Union turned the ball over
on downs twice, it resulted in a rough night offensively.
Union scored first when Waters hit Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.)
on a 10-yard scoring play. The PAT was blocked, leaving it 6-0 with
7:46 to go in the first.
Pikeville’s begin clicking in the second as it posted two scores to
take a 14-6 lead into the half. Dan Wideman hit Demarc Anderson
for two 16-yard scoring passes - the second one coming with
14 seconds to play in the second, to lift the Bears to the 14-6
advantage.
After a scoreless third quarter, Wideman found De’Von Joseph
for a 22-yard strike to make it 21-6 with 9:53 to play. De’Rail Sims
scored on a 1-yard plunge to extend the Bears’ lead to 28-6 at the
6:32 mark.
The Bulldogs continued to show some fight as they covered 60
yards in four plays for their next score. Waters hit Rolondo Dyer
(Lawrenceburg, Ga.) for a 40-yard scoring play to pull Union within
28-12 with 5:42 remaining. Once again, the PAT was blocked.
Pikeville sealed the victory when Brando Richards returned an
interception 48 yards for a touchdown with 52 seconds to play. The
two-point conversion was no good, making the final 34-12.
Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) hauled in eight catches for 79 yards,
while Callahan pulled in six for 53 yards and a score.
For Pikeville, Wideman completed 15-of-29 passes for 140 yards
and three scores while rushing for 146 yards on 20 carries.
GAME 5 - SHORTER
Sept. 29, 2007
UNION 17
SHORTER 41
ROME, Ga. - Host Shorter (Ga.) College racked up over 300 yards
rushing Saturday as it handed Union College a 41-17 loss in a Mid-
South Conference interdivisional contest.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs 0-5 on the season, while the
Eagles improved to 4-1 overall.
Shorter outgained Union 385-318 in total offense with 315 yards
coming on the ground. The Eagles did not have a 100-yard rusher
but did have three to run for over 60 yards and four over 50 yards.
Eagle quarterback Drew Elrod led the team with 86 yards rushing as
he completed just 3-of-4 passes for 70 yards and touchdown.
Offensively for Union, Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.) set the alltime
career completions record as he connected on 24-of-44 passes
for 210 yards and one score. He now has 516 career completions,
surpassing the previous mark of 496 which was held by Stanley
Niece. Waters also inched closer to the 6,000-yard mark as he currently
has 5,939 career passing yards.
Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) hauled in nine passes for 58 yards,
vaulting him up the all-time receiving list. He slid up four spots to
fourth as he now has 97 career receptions. Terence Pollock (Orange
Park, Fla.) led Union’s ground game with 94 yards on 24 carries.
Before the ten-minute mark in the first quarter, the Hawks drove it
into the end zone on an A.J. Cooley three-yard carry, followed by a
Lukas Gonzalez extra point to put Shorter ahead 7-0.
With two minutes remaining in the first, Shorter furthered their lead
on another Cooley two-yard touchdown carry to start the second
quarter, 14-0.
The Bulldogs’ first of two touchdowns came in the second quarter
on a Shorter fumble that was recovered by Union’s Marekus Smith
(Lithonia, Ga.), which he returned 85 yards to the end zone. The
85-yard fumble return is the longest in Bulldog history, besting a
77-yard return by Lionel Watkins against Shorter in 2005.
A little over a minute later, with 12:07 left in the half, Shorter’s
Fabian Daniel ran a five-yard touchdown carry to make the game,
21-7. After a Union College field goal from James Hager, Shorter
scored their final points of the half on an eight-yard run from Chris
Chapman, with the Hawks up 28-10.
In the third, the only points for either side came on a long 59-yard
pass from Elrod to Chris Chapman, Shorter leading 35-10.
Gonzalez’s two field goals in the fourth (from 27 and 30 yards) and
a 11-yard touchdown pass from Waters to Chris Collopy (Manchester,
Ky.) made the final 41-17.
GAME 6 - CUMBERLAND (TN)
Oct. 6, 2007
CUMBERLAND (TN) 14
UNION 21
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - On a day full of milestones, Union College
ended its 11-game losing streak with a 21-14 decision over visiting
Cumberland (Tenn.) University Saturday in Mid-South Conference
interdivisional action.
Union (1-5 overall, 0-2 MSC East) had not tasted victory since
winning 39-17 over Pikeville (Ky.) College on Sept. 30, 2006. The
11-game slide was the second longest streak in program history.
Union had a 25-game losing streak that stretch through the 1998,
1999 and 2000 seasons.
During the win, three Union Bulldogs achieved milestones. Sophomore
running back Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) rushed for
74 yards on 19 carries as he became the ninth player in program
history to run for 1,000 yards in a career. Pollock now has 1,018
career rushing yards on 259 carries.
Senior wideout Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) became just the fourth
player in program history to haul in 100 career passes as he caught
six passes for 93 yards and one touchdown. The 5-foot-8, 175-
pound receiver now has 103 career receptions for 1,188 yards.
However, it was senior quarterback Joey Waters (McDonough,
Ga.) as he completed 22-of-36 passes for 358 yards and three
scores as he became only the second player in program history to
throw for more than 6,000 yards in a career. Waters now has 6,297
career passing yards and needs just 219 more to pass Lee Worley
for first place on the all-time list.
After a scoreless first quarter, Union cracked the scoring column
with 6:05 left in the half as Waters hit Kelly on a one-yard pass
play. After James Hager’s (Micanopy, Fla.) PAT, Union led 7-0 at
the break. Union can thank its defense for setting up the score.
Cumberland was driving and had the ball at the Union 9, but Josh
Littleton (Waverly, Ga.) picked off a Matt Eads pass at the goal line
and returned to Union’s 33 to set up the scoring drive.
Cumberland (1-4 overall, 0-1 MSC West) tied the game by taking
the opening kick of the second half and driving 61 yards in nine
plays for a score. Dexter Elston capped the drive with a six-yard run,
making it 7-7 with 11:15 on the clock.
Union then struck twice as Waters hooked up with P.J. Burrowes
(Middlesboro, Ky.) on a pair of scoring passes the covered 31 and
34 yards, respectively. The first touchdown came at the 8:53 mark
with the second coming with 44 seconds remaining in the third,
lifting Union to a 21-7 advantage heading into the fourth.
Eads scored Cumberland’s first fourth-quarter points of the year
on a one-yard plunge, pulling the visitors within 21-14 with 12:49
to play.
Union dominated statistically, outgaining Cumberland 479-257
in total offense and maintaining possession for 35 minutes and 53
seconds.
Waters’ 358 yards passing marked a career-high for the Union
signal-caller, and his three touchdowns gives him 15 on the year
and 54 for his career. Burrowes had a big day with four catches for
82 yards and two scores, while Ben Kelly (Owenton, Ky.) had four
catches for 40 yards and Stephen Hunter (Pineville, Ky.) caught
three balls for 33 yards. Waters shared the wealth fairly well as he
hit seven different receivers in the game.
GAME NOTES
GAME 7 - CAMPBELLSVILLE
Oct. 7, 2007
CAMPBELLSVILLE 14
UNION 31
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Senior quarterback Joey Waters
cemented his place in the record books as Union College used a big
first half to send it to a 31-14 win over visiting Campbellsville (Ky.)
University Saturday in Mid-South Conference interdivisional play.
Waters (McDonough, Ga.) completed 25-of-38 passes for 330
yards and two touchdowns as he became the all-time leading
passer in Bulldog history as he now has 6,627 career passing yards,
surpassing Lee Worley’s mark of 6,515.
One of Waters’ favorite targets, Shawn Kelly (Owenton, Ky.)
hauled in seven passes for 98 yards to move into third place on the
all-time receptions list. He jumped past Jon Smith for the third spot
as Kelly now has 110 catches.
Union (2-5 overall, 0-2 MSC East) dominated the game offensively,
outgaining Campbellsville 569-249 in total offense. The
Bulldogs racked up a season-high 218 yards rushing, nearly a 100
more than the team’s previous best.
Meanwhile, Campbellsville (0-6 overall, 0-1 MSC West) struggled
all day to move the ball. In the first half, the Tigers has just 80 yards
in total offense with the bulk of their production coming in the fourth
quarter.
The Bulldogs took the opening kick and needed just three plays to
find the end zone. On a first down and 10 at the Tiger 48, Ben Kelly
(Owenton, Ky.) broke through the line and found an outside lane
in scoring the game’s first points with 14:02 still to go in the first.
James Hager’s (Micanopy, Fla.) made it 7-0.
After Campbellsville went three and out, Union appeared to be on
its way to another score. However, William Griffin picked off Waters
at the Tiger 15 and returned it 85 yards to even the score at 7-7 with
9:12 left in the first.
Union rebounded nicely as it countered with a nine-play, 60-yard
scoring drive. Waters capped the drive by finding Kyle Callahan
(Covington, Ky.) for a 10-yard scoring pass to make it 14-7 with 4:28
on the clock.
Antonio Drane (Louisville, Ky.) putting the finishing touches on
another long Bulldog drive a one-yard plunge with 5:40 remaining in
the half. Taking advantage of a Tiger fumble, the Bulldogs needed
just two minutes and 44 seconds to cover 90 yards in 10 plays.
Union took a 28-7 lead into the half following a Stephen Hunter
(Pineville, Ky.) 17-yard scoring reception at the 2:10 mark in the
second. In the third, Hager added a 21-yard field goal to extend the
lead to 31-7 with 7:39 on the clock.
Campbellsville’s offense finally put points on the board midway
through the fourth quarter as Greg Fountain punched the ball in from
6 yards out, capping an eight-play, 80-yard drive with 6:22 remaining.
Taylor Pruitt’s PAT made it 31-14.
Drane led the Union ground attack with a career-high 93 yards on
17 carries. Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) had 59 yards on 12
rushes, while Ben Kelly had 58 yards on six attempts. Callahan had
eight catches for 128 yards, and Ben Kelly pulled down seven balls
for 78 yards.
