Two concerts and playing for Commencement and Baccalaureate were
on this year's program for the University Orchestra, which was directed
by Carl Claus. Shirley Fowler was soloist for the first semester concert
which included works by Mozart, Haydn and Dvorak. A new type of
program was presented in the annual spring concert which featured
operatic excerpts. The Vandaleers appeared with the orchestra in the
famous prison duet and chorus from "II Trovatore" with Jack Gregory
and Shirley Fowler as soloists. Other student soloists for this concert
were Joanne Peters, Chuck LaFollette and Gerald Goecke. The University
Orchestra, the Vandaleers and the University Singers combined
for the finale which was the Pilgrims' Chorus from the opera "Tannhauser"
by Richard Waqner. This same number was presented at the
Commencement exercises.
