We’re a team at Bike Business and we’ve been working together on trade magazines for years; we’ve worked on
trade magazines for machine tooling and other industries, and on a magazine which is quite similar to Bike Business but
for the automotive aftermarket.
That’s when we realised that there was nothing that specifically serviced the trade side of the bike business.
Workshops and retailers seemed to lack a publication that could advise them of what was new – not the glamour side of
the bike business with stories on Moto GPs and road tests, but the nuts and bolts of the industry.
Likewise there was nothing to give the importers, manufacturers and distributors of parts, accessories, tools and
equipment a voice to communicate with the workshops and retailers.
So this is it – Bike Business.
Now we’re in your hands, in more ways than one. Bike Business is as much your voice in the industry as it is ours.
Without your input it won’t work the way it should.
So let us know what’s new in your world and we’ll tell the rest of the bike world. Let us know what you’d like to see in

Hyosung Sales Growth
Hyosung was the fastest growing
motorcycle marque in Australia last year,
recording a massive 103.7 percent
increase in sales compared with 2005
according to the company.
With 2196 units retailed in 2006,
Hyosung - which came under the
ownership of the Melbourne-based PS
Importers on April 1 last year - is now
the eighth biggest seller of on-road
motorcycles in Australia.
Hyosung’s astonishing result came
on the strength of an outstanding year
for the GT250R. A total of 878 GT250Rs
were sold in 2006 - a 354.9 per cent
increase on 2005. The GT250R was
also the seventh biggest seller in the entire
road bike market.
The GV250 Aquila cruiser also
performed with distinction in the 250cc
category (359 units), while the 650cc
family - the GT650R, GT650, GT650S
Tourer and GV650 Aquila - kept sales
on the boil. “This is a fantastic result for
Hyosung,” said PS Importers’ Marketing
Manager, Mark Fattore.
“We knew that we were onto a good
thing with Hyosung from the start, but
the response from the marketplace has
simply been overwhelming.
The sales figures were collated by
research group ERG International for
the Federal Chamber of Automotive
Industries.
Sales strong in Australia
With the second half of the year

the September quarter, the Australian

track to eclipse 130,000 units for the
first time.

to grow, with sales rising 8.2 percent to

Bike Expo Heads South
Crowds flocked to the Brisbane
Convention and Exhibition to check out
the latest motorcycles, scooters, ATVS,
products and services at the Australian
Motorcycle Expo Brisbane.
The first of Australia’s three premier
motorcycle showcase events was
extremely well received by the public.
Organisers were greeted by large
crowds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
mornings, eager to be the first to sample
new additions to the motorcycle market
for 2008, as well as interesting concept
machines and race models.
Harley-Davidson’s unique countdown
clock kept the crowd guessing until it lifted
the crates from over its new Fat Bob and
Rocker machines.
MV Agusta showed off the world’s most
expensive production motorcycle, the
F4CC, and BMW Motorrad added the HP2
Megamoto to its lineup, as well as two
new additions to the G 650 range.
Suzuki lifted the covers off its allnew
B-King, and the latest generation
Hayabusa. Triumph presented the Street
Triple, and Piaggio with its interesting
new MP3 Scooter. A highlight of the event
was undoubtedly the screening of Casey
Stoner’s MotoGP title win on the Western
QBE Stage and Screen on Sunday
afternoon.

response to the Australian Motorcycle
Expo Brisbane had been
very encouraging and
looked forward to further
success at the next
event in Melbourne from
October 5-7.

The Australian Motorcycle Expo
Melbourne will be hosted by the
Melbourne Exhibition and Convention
Centre from October 5-7.
Even more model releases are
scheduled for the event, with a range of
manufacturers confirming their latest 2008
machines to be displayed. The event
then heads to New South Wales from
November 2-4 for the Sydney Motorcycle
Show, the final event on the calendar.

BMW Motorrads new G 650 models.
Building on the warm welcome Australians have given the new
generation BMW G 650 Xchallenge in the past six months, BMW
Motorrad Australia has added two further models to the range.
The BMW G 650 Xcountry and the BMW G 650 Xmoto both
came into the spotlight at the Brisbane Motorcycle show on
September 21, 2007.
Both models use the same powertrain as fitted to the BMW G
650 Xchallenge, and all offer the same high levels of durability
and longevity not to mention 10,000 km service intervals.
The liquid-cooled 652cc single cylinder engine delivers 39
kW (53hp) at 7000 rpm and 60 Nm of torque at 5250 rpm. Fuel
economy is impressive, giving more than 200 km between refills.
Just as with the BMW G 650 Xchallenge, the two new models
are driven by an O-ring chain.
The new bikes weigh less than 148 kg dry.
The bridge-type tubular steel frame with cast aluminium side
sections and bolted-on aluminium rear frame, together with the
light alloy cast rear-wheel swing arm ensure the machines remain
light on their wheels.
The BMW G 650 Xcountry is aimed at sport-oriented city
dwellers who break loose on Saturday and Sunday. The G 650
Xcountry is as much at home in the city as off the beaten track.
The BMW G 650 Xmoto is aimed at sporty, modern riders who
need a small, light bike that delivers superb agility as well as
outstanding handling for cutting through the twists and turns of
congested city streets, or twisty backroads.
The greatest differentiation outside the styling of the bodywork
is the suspension set up. Where the existing BMW G 650
Xchallenge uses a rear air shock, the BMW G 650 Xcountry and
BMW G 650 Xmoto feature a spring strut adjustable for length.
Differences in suspension geometry are ensured by the
spring travel, the size of the various wheels, as well as modified
mounting points for the front wheel.

Xcountry has 19-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke wheels.
The brake systems also differ, with the BMW G 650 Xmoto
fitted with a four-piston front brake calliper grabbing a 320 mm
disc, while the BMW G 650 Xcountry has the same single front
disc set up as the Xchallenge: a 300 mm disc, matched with a
double-piston brake calliper.
At the rear there is a 240 mm brake disc and floating-calliper.
As with most BMW models, Anti-Lock Brakes are available as an
option. Again reflecting the usual standard of BMW Motorrad,
the G 650 X models may also be customised by a wide range of
accessories and special features tailored to each model.
“These G 650 models are just the first of a range of new
exciting machines from BMW in the near future,” said Miles Davis,
Marketing Manager, BMW Motorrad Australia and New Zealand.

On Yer Bike
It’s spring so hundreds of Victorian riders jump back on their bikes after a winter
break, and unfortunately this is associated with a spike in crashes during the start of
the warmer months.
In an effort to address this occurrence HART and local RoadSafe groups are again
holding their Annual Ride For Life event.
This year’s event will be held at Tullamarine on Sunday October 21st and at Kilsyth
on Sunday November 11th. Now in its seventh year at Tullamarine and second year at
Kilsyth, the event offers road safety information, discounts on training and protective
gear, and services for two-wheeled fans and enthusiasts.
Over 1500 people attended Ride For Life between HART’s two Melbourne Centres
in 2006. As well as partnering with local RoadSafe groups, participants this year will
include, McLeod Accessories, Draggin Jeans, Pirelli, and the No-Fear Honda Race
Teams. Honda will provide Motorcycle Service Workshops for those who want to learn

Cramping Your Style
CrampBuster is just what it says, it
provides a way for comfortable throttle
control while dramatically reducing wrist
fatigue caused by long rides.
No tools are required for installation.
Just spring it open and slip it on.
The original CrampBuster started life
as a ‘one size fits all’ motorcycle cruise
assist. It was originally designed 1 1/8”
in diameter with the paddle portion
protruding back toward the rider. This
first model fits all metric bikes as well as
standard Harley grips.
When Harley introduced their
oversized grips a few years ago,
some people complained of having
to work too hard to stretch the
Standard CrampBuster to install it.
So CrampBuster responded with an
oversized model, which is still the same
shape as the standard but increased to
1 3/8” in diameter.
The next modification came when

pretty interesting looking CrampBusters.
While most liked the CrampBuster just

late 1980s and now being adopted by
the competition, resists ‘stepped-wear’

wet braking and shorter stopping distances.
The Storm-ST rear benefits from Avon’s Enhanced Aqua Flow
pattern, first used in sports tyres, which rapidly clears away surface
water to further increase confidence in the wet.
Also developed for sports tyres and now built into Storm-ST
is Avon’s Advanced Tread Arc Combination profile which varies
the tread profile across the tyre for the ultimate in handling and
stability, whatever the lean angle. The ATAC profile results in neutral
contours, ensuring smoother transition on lean angle changes, and
noticeably increases stability, especially under heavy braking.
Finally, all components are fine-tuned by Avon’s Enhanced
Stability System to deliver a tyre in which the carcass, sidewalls and
tread pattern work together to reduce localised flexing within the tyre
structure to optimise grip, durability and warm-up capabilities.

This year has been an exciting year for Ikon Suspension, one of Australia’s motorcycle

Speedway champion Leigh Adams.

Standing Up to the Competition
Chris Anderson started making bike
stands more than 25 years ago and first
advertised them in a national magazine
under his business name Anderson Bike
Stands. By 1988 he had renamed the
business CBA Engineering, and the bike
stands were still a substantial part of that
business.
CBA continues to manufacture bike
stands in-house but has diversified
substantially offering a broader range of
engineering services.
To enable these services to prosper
CBA has moved to larger premises
at Minto. Anderson Stands are
manufactured in-house and sold directly
from CBA to retailers, this means that
any issues or questions can be tackled
directly by the designer.
Big Wheel Ezi Lift Universal Rear
Stands
According to CBA the company was
the first to make an adjustable width rear
swing arm stand with interchangeable
forked and L shaped pick-up
attachments.
That was in 1987 and since then the
design is just about everywhere.

the wheels, they have improved the
mechanical advantage at the first part of

The technical evolution has certainly
hit the bike business and the demands
placed on the workshop are higher and

The need for routine maintenance, service deadlines and
diagnostic alarms for systems equipping modern motorcycles

- system failure alarm warning light

Need a full size bike lift but have no space?
