National Industry Conference & Exhibition - MelbourneBIKEBusinessb u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s sw e l c o m eKevin’s on his bike!Seems Kevin Rudd has put a few noses in the motorcycleindustry out of joint.Recent comments by the PM reveal he is looking at ways tocut the number of motorcyclists who die on Australia’s roads.Mr Rudd told Fairfax Radio that motorcyclists account forup to 15 per cent of the road toll.“Last year 240 motorcycle riders were killed and 5,000hospitalised, these are huge numbers,” he said.“We’re now working on a national road safety strategythrough the Australian Transport Commission. We’re going to look at a whole series of practical measuresfrom the community about how we can bring this appallingfatality and injury rate down.”Soon after, the Australian Motorcycle Council responded, welcoming the Prime Minister’s interest in motorcycle safetybut said his comments required clarification.Speaking in Hobart, AMC Chairman, Shaun Lennard alsoadded further detail to information released by InfrastructureMinister, Anthony Albanese, showing that the motorcycle crashdata in Australia was not as severe as had been represented.Mr Rudd was commenting on figures released that day byMinister Albanese, highlighting a 3.1% increase in motorcyclefatalities over the past 10 years.Mr Lennard sought to clarifysome of the statistics released by the Minister. “Whilst thenumber of motorcycle fatalities has increased by an average of3.1% over the past 10 years, the number of motorcycles on theroad has actually increased by an average of 5.1% each yearover the same period. Ten years ago there were around 300,000registered motorcycles and scooters in Australia. In 2008 it’s well over half a million – that’s a massive increase. It’s around 60% in ten years. The fatality rate has actuallyreduced over that period of time – for 2007 it was the lowestit had been in the past ten years. This is in part a reflection ofexcellent work being done by some of the state jurisdictions inconsultation with the AMC’s motorcycle rider groups. However”he conceded “there were still far too many motorcycle crashesin Australia. The AMC is past the ‘blame-game’; we want to workon realistic strategies that can bring about further reductions. In the National Road Safety Strategy, motorcyclists are listedas ‘vulnerable road users’ along with cyclists and pedestrians.‘Vulnerable’ doesn’t mean more likely to crash – it’s saying that ifyou are unfortunate enough to have a crash, then the outcome islikely to be more severe. This is why motorcyclist injury numbers are above those forcar drivers.” Mr Albanese’s comment last week that ‘your first(motorcycle) accident is likely to be your last’ were neither truenor helpful, Mr Lennard said, and only highlights that the Ministerhas not been fully briefed on motorcycle safety initiatives.BIKEBusinessb u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s sc o n t e n t sAUSTRALIA’S MOTORCYCLE PARTS & ACCESSORIES INDUSTRY MAGAZINEBIKEBusinessSafetySpotlightIncreasesSalesBBnice DemandCreates Date ShiftBBnice 08Issue 5 May - June 2008b u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s sOEM QUALITY FILTERSfor every motorcycleAbout the cover:Mahle Knecht OEMquality filters for themotorcycle industry. Now distributed inAustralia by MunichMotorcycles.Read about it onpage 21 of this issue.news 4 - 6bikes & atvs 8 - 10accessories 12 - 20service parts 21 - 28workshop 29 - 34Triumph Gets theJuice on BiofuelsPLUSThe Low Down on- Accessories- Parts- WorkshopPlease read andforward to:Management qService Dept qParts Dept qAccessoriesDept qFront Desk qPlease file qDistributed by Munich Motorcycleswww.munichmotorcycles.com.auadvertisers index - 35advertisers by brand - 35advertisers by product - 35Published by:Email:bikebusiness@westnet.com.auAll material appearing in Bike Business magazine is copyright. n e w sStudents Road Test Apple BiofuelA Triumph Daytona 675 poweredby bioethanol fuel has reached anastonishing speed of 255km/h at aproving ground in England. The biofuel used for this groundbreaking initiative was produced fromwindfall apples by students from PrinceWilliam School in Northamptonshire.Devised by Rupert Paul, contributingeditor of Bike magazine, Project FastFruit aimed to convert and run a highperformancevehicle on biofuel usingonly basic equipment.“We believe that achieving a speed158.7mp/h sets a record for a productionbike on home-brewed fuel. Althoughthey are still questionable from anenvironmental point of view, biofuels arehere to stay, and this experiment wasall about exploring how much powerwe could extract from them – as well ashaving some fun,” Mr Paul said.Triumph became involved with theproject by providing its Daytona 675 asthe test bike. The successful final run onApril 24 was the result of four monthsof hard work, with the school havingfermented and distilled around 6000crushed apples, while Bike modified theDaytona’s engine to run on bioethanol.“At the moment all Triumphmotorcycles are designed for optimumperformance with non-ethanol fuelbut are compatible with E10 (10 percentethanol)” PR & Communications Managerat Triumph Motorcycles communicationsmanager Andrea Friggi said.“We’re currently investigating makingall models compatible with E25 fuel,so while this is a fun experiment it doeshave a serious side and we’re lookingforward to reviewing the results.”Surprisingly, very little modificationwas required; just a remap of the fuelinjectionsystem. The engine was thentested using commercially availableE85 (85 percent ethanol) with veryencouraging results. The project then moved to the nextphase, with testing and optimisation ofthe engine using the fuel produced bythe students before the final run on theBruntingthorpe proving ground.“This is a really interesting project forour students to get involved in,”Head of Chemistry at Prince WilliamSchool Dr Anton McAleese said.“It’s important that industryrecognises the skills and creativity thatour students can offer.Further, it’s often young people todaywho are the most concerned about thefuture of our environment, so it’s a topicclose to their hearts.”Industry awaits Safety Summit RecommendationsThe industry awaits a series ofrecommendations to be delivered followingthe nation’s first Motorcycle and ScooterSafety Summit held in Canberra last month. The summit, conducted in conjunctionwith the federal government, was promptedby safety concerns as motorcycle andscooter sales continue to grow.“The summit on April 10 and 11 wasthe first of its kind in the motorcycle andscooter arena,” FCAI motorcycle managerRay Newland said. The key issues discussed were dataand analysis, rider protection, trainingand licensing, risk taking, education, enforcement, road infrastructure and roadside hazards.A list of short and medium term projectsare due to emerge from the two-day event.Protective clothing was one of the areasexamined showed the need for ridersto wear appropriate clothing while onthe road.“The emerging feeling was a need topromote and identify adequate protectiveclothing,” Mr Newland said. This issue along with a host of othersafety issues will then be considered fora National Road Safety Strategy for 2010to 2015.TAC Ad Makes Sales ImpactMore than one month in and theTransport Accident Commission’s initiativeto promote protective clothing seemsto be making an impact on the sale ofmotorcycle accessories.Featuring graphic examples of theperils of a road accident, the newadvertisement breaks down the varioustypes of potential injuries incurred when arider is not wearing protective gear.“The TAC advertisement has had alarge impact on us,” Draggin Jeansmarketing manager Fiona Mackintoshsaid. “It reached a different audience, people who don’t necessarily considerBIKEBusinessb u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s s4 May/June 2008themselves enthusiasts but insteadcommuters.”The TAC initiative had caused a rise inthe sale of Draggin Jeans products andbrought about greater awareness of saferiding, she said.“Commuter groups now knowthere’s clothing that looks normal buthas motorcycle protection because ofmaterials like Kevlar.”

n e w sCrunch Time for Safety SummitRecognising that motorcycles andscooters are becoming an increasinglypopular transport choice, the OECD’sInternational Transport Forum is hosting itsfirst-ever international Motorcycle SafetyWorkshop in Norway in June.AMC Shaun Lennard will representAustralian and New Zealand riders atthe workshop. “Finally governmentsare recognising that they need to workwith motorcycle groups. I will be able tobring back from Europe information andstrategies to improve motorcycle safetybased on the best information anddata available.”Beware of Internet ScammersThe parts and accessories world is yetanother area to be at risk from internetscammers. One of our readers has kindly given usthe heads up on a group wanting Aussieparts sent to Nigeria. The concern is that the bank detailswill be sourced for payment and lead topotential rorting of the account. Here’s a copy of an email received byour reader recently.Don’t say nobody warned you.HELLO, THIS IS JOHN JAMES, I WILL LIKE TOORDER FOR PART BELOW:SPARK PLUG BELOW: NGK BKR5E.Part Number 7938, NGK BKR5E...Part Number 6962, NGK BKR6EGP...Part Number 7092 CHAMPION: RC12YC.I WILL LIKE TO NO THE ONE YOU HAVE INSTOCK AND IF YOU CAN ORDER ANY OFTHE SPARK PLUG FOR ME AND I WANTYOU TO GET ME THE SHIPPING COST TOLAGOS NIGERIA 23401 VIA UPS EXPRESS 3DAY SHIPMENT AND WHAT TYPE OF CREDITCARD DO YOU ACCEPT,HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU BACK.THANKS JOHN JAMESTOKYO, Japan.Cumulative worldwide production ofHonda Cub series motorcycles*1 reachedthe 60 million-unit milestone at the end ofApril 2008.Honda Super Cub C100, first introducedin Japan in 1958, has gained worldwideacceptance both as a business-usemotorcycle and for daily transportation, andhas been enjoyed by customers in morethan 160 countries around the world.Cubs Reach 60 Million MarkThis August will mark the 50th anniversaryof launching of Honda Cub series. When Super Cub was originallylaunched, the 2-stroke engine was themainstream power plant for motorcycles. However, the first generation Honda SuperCub C100 was equipped with an innovativeand high-performance 50cc 4-strokeengine which was highly economical anddurable. a c c e s s o r i e sAussie Bike Lift Inventor Hits NZNewcastle motorbike enthusiast IanBartrop has given New Zealand a lift withthe invention of a super-light, portablehydraulic jack.Bartrop’s devices, originally inventedto fit his own Harley-Davidson, are nowstocked in all Harley dealerships anddozens of other bike supply shopsaround Australia. The bike lifts, which retail for A$360on both sides of the Tasman, feature ahydraulic jack which sits horizontallyrather than vertically inside the device, reducing the total weight from around40 kgs for an old-fashioned bike lift tojust 15kg. “It started with me getting sickof wheeling my bike up and down thedriveway to clean it where I could lie iton its side stand in the garage,” Bartropsays.“But when I went to the shop toinvestigate buying a hydraulic bike lift,I found they were all huge things worth$600 plus. I thought, I can make onecheaper than that.”Bartrop then sat down and used whatsteel he had lying around his backyard.“The first one I made just collapsed, but I got there in the end,” he says. But going from bike enthusiast tosmall business operator has been a nicejourney for the former motorcross rider. These days, the trained boilermakerworks during the week as a quantitysurveyor/estimator and spends hisweekends riding his Harley-Davidsonaround the country visiting motorcycleconventions and bike shops to plug thecontraptions.“It’s pretty nice work. We made an11,500 kilometre trip over to Perth to visitbike shops and convince them to stockthe Bike Lifts,” Bartrop says. But it was on a trip to New Zealand lastyear that Bartrop decided to attempt theexport market. With the help of Austrade, Bartropmade contact with importer AucklandMotorcycle and Power Sports, which began distributing the I. B. BikeLifts to New Zealand retailers.“Next conquest is America, if I have myway,” he says“I’m going to the U.S. next month tosee what the level of interest is.I would love America to take off,but I’ll probably have a heart attack ifit does happen.”For more information contact:I.B. Bike lifts on 0410 559 269. Loose terrain is handled welldue to the spacing and configuration of thetread blocks and the unique Terrapactor designconcept. The centre tread provides good drivetraction in sand and wet muddy conditions. Thebest feature of this tyre is its hill climbing ability, especially in rough rutted terrain and off camberinclines. Many riders have remarked at its abilityto take off in the middle of a steep hill climbwithout wheel spin. This is achieved througha combination of inherent grip from a naturalrubber compound and the terrain wedgingeffect of Terrapactor design concept.TRACTIONATOR ENDURO 110/90-19This tyre shares the features of the 140/80-18 and was designed for those crazy blokesaround Alice Springs who like to race theirmotorcross bikes in the Finke desert rally. The spacing and placing configuration hasbeen fine tuned to be biased toward softerloose terrain. It will perform well in motorcrossevents in loose to intermediate.TRACTIONATOR ENDURO 120/90-18This tyre is very similar to the 110/100-18but with a flat CRS to cater for 250-450cc bikes(especially CRF450, WR450, EXC450). Sometread blocks have been enlarged to handleadditional horsepower for better wear.TRACTIONATOR ENDURO 140/80-18This tyre was designed for big bore bikes (ourchief designer rides an EXC 525 and spent ahuge amount of time perfecting this tyre and wesuspect he made specifically for the EXC525).It just fits in the KTM swing arm without needing toremove the chain guard. It shares all the featuresof the other Tractionator Enduro sizes, but thetread blocks have been enlarged further to handlemore horsepower. Some spacing and tread blockangles have also been changed to handle theincreased engine braking and tail drift of the bigfour strokes decelerating into fast corners.TRACTIONATOR ENDURO 80/100-21This front is excellent for bikes that tendto be thrown around a lot. It is designed formountainous terrain, to hang on in mixed andhard terrain cornering at all lean angles and givegood wear life. It will climb out of ruts and changedirection on demand while negotiating steephill climbs and steep downhill sections. It tendsto regain traction if there is a front slip situation, instead of slipping and totally losing traction. For more information contact Pro AccessoriesAustralia:Phone: 07 3277 0675 - QLD/NT/Northern NSW.Phone: 02 9604 8860 - NSW/SA/TAS WAemail: sales@proaccessories.com.au or visitwww.proaccessories.com.au

The engine,2. The clutch,3. The gearbox. These three distinct componentshave individual needs but in mostpower plants share one lubricationenvironment.Castrol Trizone Motorcycle Oils areformulated to meet each and everyindividual demand, common and diverse, made by these three main zones.FROM THE ENGINE ZONECastrol Trizone oils maintain highflow in all conditions to deliver completelubrication under the enormous stressesexerted by huge mechanical loadings, high piston speeds and extremecombustion temperatures common inmodern motorcycle engines.FOR THE GEARBOX ZONEMotorcycles use constant meshgearboxes which must have a lubricantthat can combat shearing, sliding andhammering forces to protect precisioncomponents against wear whilewithstanding these impacts itself tomaintain intact molecular stability.IN THE CLUTCH ZONEMutli-plate “WET” clutches demanda lubricant to provide cooling as well assustaining the ideal balance between slipand grip necessary for smooth, reliableoperation with long service life.CASTROL TRIZONE RANGEACTIV 4T 4T 15W-50Exceeds API SG and JASO MA2Standards. s e r v i c e p a r t sT.F.I. Fuel Injection Control UnitYour Electronically Fuel-Injected vehicle canboast improved drivability and power with theDobeck Performance TFI.The TFI features simple plug and playinstallation and quick and easy adjustment. No need for computers and complexmaps. Uses carburetor tuning logic for easy tounderstand fuel adjustments. If your customersplan to modify their new Electronically Fuel-Injected vehicle our TFI Control Unit is a must. This easy-to-use control unit plugs directly into theOEM wiring harness between the ignition and fuelinjection control of the engines fuel managementsystem. The fuel curve can be changed with thefaceplate buttons. This is a simple adjustment thatcan move the fuel curve richer or leaner in eacharea of the map.Key benefits include:• Allows addition of fuel required with enginemodifications without upsetting stock fuel map.• Integrated buttons provide easy adjustmentand fine-tuning of fuel delivery curve withoutexternal programming devices.• LED lights indicate fuel delivery settingswhile tuning• Won’t interfere with vehicle’s stock sensorsand inputsThe Pro Tuner Fuel Injection (TFi) controlbox sets a new standard in fuel injectionadjustment.Manufactured by Mark Dobeck, of DobeckPerformance (the founder of Dynojet), this systemis different in its method of adjustment by dealingdirectly with the fuel injection signal after it leavesthe factory ECU. It adjusts the fuel requirementswithout tricking sensors or modifying the factorysettings, which can limit the ECU’s effectivenessat compensating for changing altitude or weatherconditions. The digital circuitry construction allows aspecific range of adjustment of the fuel deliverycurve in the areas that most effect drivability andperformance.Idle/Cruise: As fuel injection is very efficient, itconsiders idle and cruise to be virtually identicalas far as their A/F ratio requirement goes (asopposed to carburetion), so the low speedadjuster (Green Adjustment LED) can be setsimilar to an idle mixture screw on a carburetor. As the vehicle accelerates under light to mediumload, the ECU maintains an A/F ratio consistentwith its emissions focus, and the TFi box makesslight modifications to that focus based on thedrivability requirements.Midrange:With fuel injection midrange fueling is onlyrelative to fast acceleration at or near full throttle. At certain speeds and loads as the factoryECU makes transitions between cruise andperformance A/F ratios.Using the yellow adjustment LED and the RPMselect adjustment the TFi box has the ability toselect and alter fuel at these points of transition. This effect is similar to the effects that a needleposition change and an accelerator pump canhave in a carburetor.Main/Top End:Once the throttle is opened abruptly or anengine RPM/load is achieved that demands aperformance bias A/F ratio, the main fuel adjustercan come into play.(Red Adjustment LED) Similar to carburetion, air filters, race exhaust, cams, etc. can effect thefuel requirements in the performance range. Themain fuel adjuster can compensate for thesetypes of modifications just like changing a main jetin a carburetor.See the demo of the faceplate adjustments, go to:www.DobeckPerformance.com/Gen_demo/For more information contact: Moto hansa02 9638 4488.Springs H Valves H Seals H Bushes H Tools H Performance UpgradesAustralia’s most extensive range of Suspension ComponentryTerry Hay’s SHOCK TREATMENTPhone: 02 4773 9115 www.shocktreatment.com.auBIKEBusiness25 May/June 2008 b u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s s

s e r v i c e p a r t sShock TreatmentThe top race teams in the USA change their fluids after every race meeting to ensure optimumresults are achieved. The oil on your suspension components has to perform a number offunctions such as damping, lubrication, heat absorption and suspending of contaminants. The obvious message here is tochange your oil regularly. Changes tosuspension performance can be madebe altering oil weight and volume. If you use a thicker oil it will increase thedamping effect resulting in slower forkaction. This effect will be more apparent onrebound than compression.By adjusting oil volume you can varyyour forks bottoming resistance andfirmness. How this works is simple. Inside thefork they have a certain volume of air.The air works like a second spring.Under pressure (compressionstroke) the air will compress building uppressure and offering resistance.By raising oil volume you decreasethe available area for the air to compressinto, raising the air pressure andincreasing its resistance to compression. The raising of the oil will affect forkperformance right through the strokebecoming more apparent in the latterpart of the fork travel. It is very importantto be aware of maximum oil volumesbefore making changes.Changes should only be made insmall increments and effects monitored. If still unhappy with the suspensionaction and simply want it to workmore effectively a trained suspensiontechnician will be able to adjust thesuspension for increased performance.Over all the effect will result inincreased Control, Comfort, RiderConfidence and of course Speed. For more information contact ShockTreatment on: 02 4773 9115.Increase Brake Performance......withBRAIDED BRAKE HOSESWhy upgrade your old brake hoses?Want to find a local Braided Hose dealer?Need a Braided Hose designedto your specifications?¸ Improved safety with enhanced performance¸ Can reduce braking distance during a panic stop¸ Eliminates sponginess under firm/heavy braking¸ Allows immediate brake lever response¸ Certificate of Compliance includedCall us on 1300 0 BRAIDED(1300 0272 4333)or contact our network of specialistmanufacturers via our website at...BIKEBusiness26 May/June 2008b u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s s

De-burr and removeALL sharp edges on the liner and portradii.Plated Bores (ie: Electrofusion,Nikasil etc.)Hone the cylinder barrel with a“Flexihone” multi-ball type deglazer.Inspect wearing surface for signs ofdamage or signs of hardening flakingoff the surface (particularly around portedges).Have cylinder sleeved if there areANY signs of visible damage, flaking orrecoated. Then have the cylinder bore measuredin at least 6 places ... 2 readingsperpendicular to each other and in 3places in the bore (total readings).Take the average of all the reading andthat is your nominal bore size. If any of thereadings exceed factory wear limits, havebarrel sleeved or recoated.Deduct required piston/bore clearance,as per original factory specifications andwhat remains is your gradient PROXpiston size required.Thoroughly clean cylinder barrelprior to installation. Wash in your usualchemical wash bath, ensuring all portsand galleries are spotlessly clean. Then wash barrel in warm soapy waterand dry-off.Apply clean engine oil to a clean ragand wipe it up and down the bore.Continue with this procedure until nomore dark honing residues are showingon the rag.Do NOT use any form of assemblylubricant (ie: moly-slip etc.) in theengine assembly.Use the piston circlips that camewith the new piston kit. Do NOT re-usethe old circlips. If the piston rings have any markingson them, fit the ring with the writing facingupwards, Always CHECK ring end-gap inbore prior to piston installation.Be extremely careful when sliding thebarrel onto the piston. Ensure the pistonrings are properly spaced (4 strokes) orproperly located by the ring groove pins(2 strokes).Failure to ensure this could result insevere engine damage.Check ignition timing is set accordingto factory specifications. Clean andinspect carburetor for correct jetting andfloat height. Inspect intake manifold andair filter tract and ensure good sealing.Inspect reed valves for wear and properseating. w o r k s h o pSometimes, it is truly difficult to make something simple.Bike-Grab is a compact, advancedengineering design that embraces thelaws of physics to do its work. Roll eitherwheel of your motorcycle into Bike Grab’svice–like grip and Bike-Grab will keep itsafely upright until you’re ready for yournext ride. Bike-Grab’s wheel captureplates firmly grip tyre sizes from 80mmbike fronts to 195mm road racer rears. This is the broadest range of fitmentavailable in all similar products. You areassured of at least front tyre compatibilityon any bike you will ever own, making thisa lifetime investment.Half the price of the most competitors’both-wheels chock, Bike Grab is the leastcomplex and most effective alternative. With Bike-Grab you simply roll your frontor rear wheel up and over a small built-inramp and into a pair of adjustable sideplates. At the same time, the tyre aboveaxle-level,is held vice-like by our unique Vshaped capture tube. After a simple settling shake on thehandlebars, Bike-Grab, utilizing themotorcycles own weight, firmly holds thebike perfectly vertical.Free standing or anchored, Bike Grab isyour personal bike attendant.SafetyBike-Grab quite literally preventsaccidental tip-overs. Countless motorcycledealers can recall horror stories aboutprospective customers who accidentallyretracted kickstands, on brand newmodels! As an economical, unobtrusive bikestand, dealers can now prevent accidentaltip overs and allow their customers tofreely try a new model’s riding positionwith their feet firmly planted on both restsat the same time. Bike-Grab is also aspace saver. Compared to a bike leaningon its side stand, motorcycles restingsafely in Bike-Grab can use up to 20 percent less floor space.MaintenanceAround the shop, the Bike-Grab is thatextra pair of hands you always need.A perfect companion to EazyRizer Lifts,Bike-Grab holds the bike securely in placewhile the EazyRizer is positioned underthe bike. Whether it’s holding your bikefirmly while you jack-up the front wheel, orsecuring it on your workbench, Bike-Grabgives you all the help you need. Bike-Grab can also be used in conjunction withsportbike paddock stands, front or rear.TransportComputrack is the world leader in bikeset-up. They fine-tune the settings forfactory race teams with their laser framealignment rig. Computrack is adamantabout the damage done to a bike’ssuspension when compressing the forkswith traditional tie-down methods.Alignment issues generally show up onlong and raked out bikes (cruisers) at tyrechange time. Odd and uneven wear is agood sign of this issue. More sensitiveriders may notice a tendency to trackto one side when letting go of the bars.Sport bikes will let you know they havesuffered much sooner. It only takes 1mmto make a noticeable difference with theshort wheelbase and very steep front-endgeometry of today’s modern sport bikes.By anchoring the Bike-Grab to the bed of atrailer the bike can be safely and securelytransported, suspension free.Roll the bike up the entry ramp and intothe upper V-shaped front stop. Then gentlypull the bike forward into the Bike-Grabwith straps form the rear in a forward, down and out orientation.Top-heavy bikes will require someadditional strapping to catch side-to-sidemovement at the handlebars. This is goingto occur with any of the other like-productsas well. Forks will not have to undulycompress you simply want to reduce thisundesired motion. Doing this will take outless travel than a rider sitting on the bike.Once securely in place your bike canabsorb harsh road inputs just like you areriding it down the road. The rear end doesn’t dance thejitterbug, your springs aren’t loosingtension from being collapsed and yourseals are under normal pressure.Misalignment will never happen and thebike will come off the trailer with the samecrisp handling before the trip.Bike grab Options:Quick Release PlateBolt this plate to a garage floor, or on avehicle/trailer deck. The Grab simply clipsonto the plate and locked down by justthe one nylock nut. This allows the Grabto be quickly removed to make space,or use in another location. Some cleverpeople use a combination of three quickrelease plates with two Grabs in a trailer orvehicle, this allows the use of one grab inthe central position when just the one bikeis loaded or two on the outside positionsfor two bike transportingReducer KitIf the bike tyre is 110 mm wide, or less, this reducer kit must be used to capturethe tyre in the upper frame of the Grab.If the tyre is not pinched by the topframe, the bike will be unstable whenstanding un-supported in the grab. For more information contact:OneUp Motorcycles ProductsPhone: 0417 320 742.or visit www.oneup.com.auBIKEBusiness29 May/June 2008b u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s s

w o r k s h o p t e c h o t a l kElectrical Testing - Ground CircuitsWritten by Clive Ward and Robert Prudius of Coda Products Pty Ltd for more information call: 02 4962 2575 (www.coda.com.au)Most service technicians seem to havevery little problems in solving or locatingfaults in various positive power supplycircuits; they just use a multi meter andmeasure the potential on the componentbeing tested. Unfortunately, the samecannot be said for problem solving in thevarious ground circuits of a faulty system.Any electrical circuit, regardless of sizeand power requirements, is dependenton a free flowing current of electrons tofunction correctly. Any impedance toelectron flow in any electrical or electroniccircuit, will affect the performance of thatcircuit. In addition to poor performance, any resistance to current flow, between anarea, that is supposed to be a groundedarea and the true ground (0.00 volts) ofthe system, will cause a voltage potentialto exist on the supposedly groundedarea. The result of voltage being presenton the ground circuit has dramatic effectson anti-lock braking control solenoids, electronic fuel injector ground circuits, idle speed control devices and oxygensensors. Bizarre, erratic flaring of idle, leanor rich air fuel ratios and excessive fuelconsumption, can all be caused by faultsfound in Motorcycle engine and or chassisground circuits.Electrical Current Flow:There are Two Theories On Current FlowCONVENTIONAL THEORY:Conventional Theory states currentto be the movement of positive chargedparticles, referred to as positive ions (+),that move from the positive polarity to thenegative polarity of the applied voltage. This is the theory used most often in theautomotive service industry to indicate thedirection of current in a circuit. The pointingof the arrow below indicates currentdirection. Notice the voltage drop acrossthe resistor is positive on the left withrespect to the right side, and the polarityon the right side is negative with respect tothe left side. Fig 1BIKEBusiness30 May/June 2008b u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s sELECTRON THEORYThe other theory of current, called theElectron Theory, has current moving in theopposite direction. It states that currentis the movement of negatively chargedparticles, or electrons (-). In this theory, current moves from the negative polarity tothe positive polarity. It is this theory, whichis the basis for most electronic books todescribe circuit and component operation,The pointing of the arrow in the aboveillustration (Fig 2) indicates current directionfor the electron theory. Notice the polarity ofthe voltage drop across the resistor. The leftside is positive with respect to the right sideand the right side is negative with respectto the left side.Electrical Current is Like Water CurrentA simple analogy helps to understandthe concept of current. Current movingin a wire is like water flowing in a gardenhose. The water flowing through the hoseis pushed, or forced, by the water pressure.Fig 3In an electrical circuit, the applied voltage(the pressure) dislodges valence electrons(the outer ring) to induce a current in theconductor.Using the analogy of water flowingin a garden hose being like current ina conductor, and water pressure forcingthe water to move like the voltage pressuremoving current in a conductor, it iseasier to understand the concept of currentand voltage. How Do Cables and Connectors CauseCurrent Flow Problems.Circuits that handle high current levelsfound in automotive starting and chargingsystems, are adversely affected by poorconnections and improper wiring. Thehigh current demanded by these types ofautomotive circuits can cause high voltagedrops to occur, even when there is onlythe resistance of a dirty connection in thepath of the high current or the wrong wiresize selected to carry the current. For example, with 200 amps of startermotor current flowing through 0.01 ohmof resistance, a voltage drop of 2.0 voltsis produced. The desired voltage dropshould ideally be 0.0 volts. If the resistanceis merely 0.02 ohm, the voltage drop is 4.0volts. This illustrates that even the slightestresistance in a starter motor feed circuit cancause a significant undesired voltage drop, resulting in poor starter motor performance. The voltage drop consumes voltageneeded for proper circuit performance. The consumption of just two voltsneeded by the starter motor, due todirty connections and wiring, will greatlyhamper starter motor performance. When replacing the starter motor doesn’tsolve the problem of a sluggish startermotor, an undesired voltage drop isfrequently the problem.OHM’ S LAW helps explain the voltagedrop principle. The basic form of Ohm’sLaw, E = I x R. The current, I, multiplied bythe resistance, R, equals the voltage drop,E. For circuits that carry high currents,it is best to have no resistance, or 0.0ohms, in the connections and wiring.Looking at Ohm’s Law explains why.E = 1 x 0.0 ohms resistanceE = 0.0 volt, or no voltage dropE = 100 x 0.0 ohms resistanceE = 0.0 volt, or no voltage dropIf there is no resistance in the circuit, there is no voltage drop, whether there isone amp of current or one hundred ampsof current. When a small resistance develops inthe path of a large current, Ohm’s Lawagain explains what happens.I x R = E (Volts Dropped)1 amp x 1 ohm - 1.0 volt dropped200 amp x 0.01 ohm - 2.0 volts dropped200 amp x 0.02 ohm - 4.0 volts dropped

w o r k s h o p t e c h o t a l kResistance values of 0.01 or, 0.02 of anohm cannot be measured without the use oflaboratory instruments. The typical serviceohmmeter cannot accurately measure0.01 or 0.02 of an ohm so some othermethod is needed to detect resistance inthe connections and wiring of high currentcircuits. The technique to detect a highresistance connection in a high currentcircuit is to measure the voltage dropacross the connection or wire with a digitalvoltmeter. If a voltage drop is measured itindicates resistance is present. The voltage drop measured is a directreflection of the connection’s resistanceto current. The higher the resistance, thehigher the voltage drop present. It isalso possible to measure the voltage dropof a length of cable to be sure it hasn’tdeveloped undesired resistance.VOLTAGE DROPS IN CABLESA heavy-duty cable is shown with a breakin the individual wires of the cable. Noticeseveral strands are not making contact. Thisgreatly reduces the high current handlingcapability of the cable because there areless paths for the current to flow throughthe cable. Fig 4In the above illustration only twostrands are left to pass the high current. The interrupted paths, represented bythe broken wires, presents substantialresistance to high current levels passingthrough the cable. An ohmmeter will notdetect these broken wires because thetwo remaining strands can easily pass theohmmeter test current and the ohmmeterwill read 0.0 ohms. This explains why theohmmeter is not a valid instrument to testfor troubleshooting cables and connectionsfor resistance. Here is how a cable with broken strandselectrically appears to high current. Fig 5The resistance offered by the tworemaining strands, as it tries to handlethe high current demands of the circuit, develops a voltage drop which can bedetected by a digital voltmeter as long asthe normal high current of the circuit isflowing when the measurement is made.Measuring across the cable with the digitalvoltmeter will reveal a voltage drop directlyproportional to the resistance present inthe cable, as shown below. Fig 6VOLTAGE DROPS IN CONNECTIONSThe diagram below ( Fig 7) shows a dirtyground connection. At any point wherean electrical connection exists, corrosionor other foreign material, such as paint, grease, rust inhibitor, etc, can preventa good electrical connection. A poorconnection between the cable and theconnecting lug can also create resistance. This is quite a common problem; so alwaystest between the cable and ground thenbetween the connecting lug and ground tolocate the exact position of the problem. The poor electrical connection presents aresistance to circuit current, which developsa voltage drop that can be measured witha digital voltmeter. An ohmmeter may notreveal any resistance being present becausethe very small ohmmeter test current is ableto pass through the smaller area with novoltage drop. Here is what abad ground lookslike electrically. Thebad connection isrepresented by theresistance symbol. The voltage dropdeveloped bythe connection’s resistance isdetected by thedigital voltmeter.Fig 8The resistance is detected by measuringthe voltage drop completely across theground connection. Remember, if testingwith an ohmmeter, the ground connectionwill probably check good since thesmall ohmmeter test current can passthrough the ground connection withoutencountering resistance. You cannot rely on an ohmmeter todetect current impedance faults that onlyoccur when the current is flowing. Use avoltmeter instead. You will find resistance faults everytime. This is a good time to point out thatyou should have a good quality DigitalMulti Meter as part of your toolbox, if youhaven’t invested in one already, do sosoon.Testing Engine Ground Circuits. With the engine running and allavailable lights & accessories turnedon, place the negative probe of a highimpedance digital voltmeter on thebattery POST.Place the positive probe on the engineblock. If you read a voltage potential ofgreater than 0.05 volts, there is a problemin the engine ground circuit.Locate and rectify the problem. It willbe in either the ground cable, cable lugs, between the lug and the engine block orbetween the battery negative post andthe battery terminal.Testing Chassis (or Frame Ground)Ground Circuits. With the engine running and allavailable lights and accessories turnedon, place the negative probe of a highimpedance digital voltmeter on the batteryPOST. Place the positive probe on theMotorcycle chassis (Frame). If you reada voltage potential of greater than 0.05volts, there is a problem in the chassisground circuit.Locate and rectify the problem. It will bein the ground cable, cable lugs, betweenthe lug and the chassis or between thebattery negative post and the batteryterminal. Make the location of poorengine and chassis ground faults the firsttest to perform when you are diagnosingany electrical faults on any Motorcycle. If the ground circuit/s are faulty, locateand rectify the fault, clear the ElectronicControl Unit’s adaptive memory and retestthe Motorcycle. You may just saveyourself a lot of time and trouble.BIKEBusinessb u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s s31 May/June 2008
