Sydney Show heads to the Harbour 

Australia’s largest motorcycle and 

scooter show returns to Sydney with 

a new name and a new venue this 

November. 

The Sydney Motorcycle and Scooter 

Show will be held at the Sydney 

Convention and Exhibition Centre, 

Darling Harbour, from November 25- 

27. 

The CBD location makes the 

show’s scooter element especially 

significant, as more and more people 

discover the economic and timesaving 

benefits of two-wheel travel in 

the city.

Industries’ (FCAI) recent first-quarter

Motorcycle Tech Grand Prix finalists announced 

Yamaha Motor Australia is pleased to 

announce an elite list of eight finalists 

from Australia and New Zealand who will 

compete in the 2011 Yamaha Oceania 

Motorcycle Technician Grand Prix. 

The Oceania finalists named below 

earned their position by attaining a high 

level of achievement in Yamaha Technical 

Academy training programs, completing 

an online qualifying exam and scoring the 

highest mark for their respective region. 

The finals will take place in the Sydney

Gear up for safety 

An Australian study providing new 

evidence on the injury reduction benefits 

of motorcycle clothing in crashes was 

launched in Sydney recently. The study, 

led by Liz de Rome, Research Fellow, 

The George Institute for Global Health, 

University of Sydney, is the first of its 

kind and will be published in the journal, 

Accident Analysis and Prevention. 

This is the first study in over 25 

years to examine the effectiveness 

of specialised motorcycle protective 

clothing and, in particular, body armour. 

It is also the first to control other 

contributing factors that may affect the 

severity of injury, such as speed, type of 

impact and age of the rider. 

One of the key findings of the study, 

which was funded by Australia’s leading 

motorcycle insurer, Swann Insurance, 

and involved 212 motorcycle and 

scooter riders, was that riders were 

significantly less likely to be admitted 

to hospital if they crashed wearing a 

motorcycle jacket, pants or gloves. 

“One of the most important findings 

was the difference it made to be wearing 

body armour, particularly for hands and 

knees,” said Ms De Rome. 

When garments included fitted body 

armour there was a significantly reduced 

risk of any injury. 

This included a reduced risk of any 

injury to the upper body by 23%, legs 

by 39%, hands by 45% and feet by 45%. 

The results also found riders wearing 

shoes or joggers had a much higher risk 

of foot and ankle injuries, as any type of 

boot reduced the risk of injury by 53%. 

Queensland’s Gold Coast will host its third 

instalment of the Australian Motorcycle 

Expo, Australian Scooter Festival and 

Australian Personal Water Craft (PWC) Show 

over February 17-19, 2012. 

Event Manager Mark Petersen said 

visitor experience was a primary focus of the 

Expo, with demonstrations, attractions, test 

rides and guest appearances to accompany 

over 100 different manufacturer, accessory 

and service stands. 

“We’re excited to announce the return of 

the Australian Motorcycle Expo, Australian 

Scooter Festival and Australian PWC 

Show to the Gold Coast next February,” 

While there are limits to the extent to 

which can prevent injury in high impact 

crashes, it is in low impact crashes that 

protective clothing is thought to offer the 

greatest injury reduction. There is also 

evidence that the majority of motorcycle 

crashes do not involve high impacts. 

“Over 200 motorcyclists die and a 

further 8000 are seriously injured on 

Australian roads each year,” said Ms 

De Rome. “For many years, motorcycle 

safety research has been dominated 

by debate about the effectiveness 

of helmets, with less focus on other 

protection for the rider’s body. With 

the increasing human and economic 

costs of motorcycle injuries around the 

world, there was a need for research 

into the effectiveness of protective 

clothing. We hope that the results of 

this study will show riders that their gear 

protects them from more than just the 

weather, encouraging them to wear more 

protective clothing which will in turn help 

reduce injuries,” she added. 

The results of the study also send a

there has been plenty of interest in the

“As well as showcasing new motorcycles, 

scooters, PWC,s and parts, accessories and 

services, the event aims to inform, educate 

and entertain. Safety seminars, special 

guests, competitions, bike builds and action 

demonstrations from freestyle motocross, 

freestyle PWC, trials and mini bike riders will 

make this a must-visit for all riders and their 

families. 

“The Australian Motorcycle Expo 

attracts plenty of interstate interest along

clear message to the manufacturers of 

protective motorcycle clothing. 

The proportion of jackets (29%), pants 

(28%) and gloves (25%) that failed under 

crash conditions due to material damage 

indicates a need for improved quality 

control. 

While mandating usage of protective 

clothing is not recommended by the 

study’s authors, consideration could 

be given to providing incentives for 

usage of protective clothing, such as 

tax exemptions for safety gear, health 

insurance premium reductions and 

rebates.

Research at the George Institute, 

said the report highlighted the vital 

importance of high quality protective 

gear. “This is ground-breaking research,” 

she said. “It sends a clear message to 

riders that protection is important every 

time they ride, and highlights the need 

for further investment by Government 

to encourage riders to wear appropriate 

clothing, and to work with the industry 

to improve the quality of products 

available,” she added. 

Stuart Chapman, General Manager of 

Swann Insurance, said the motorcycle 

insurer was pleased to have supported 

this study. “We think it’s vitally important 

that riders have access to information 

such as the findings of this study so they 

can make informed decisions about what 

they should wear every time they ride,” 

he said.

BMW’s Berlin plant celebrates production of 2,000,000th motorcycle 

On Friday, May 6, the two millionth 

motorcycle left the assembly line of BMW’s 

Berlin Spandau plant. Since 1969, BMW 

motorcycles have been produced in the 

factory in Berlin Spandau for export all over 

the world; the significant milestone in the 

company’s history was marked by a special 

ceremony attended by the Governing Mayor 

of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and numerous 

invited guests. 

The special anniversary bike – an R 1200 

GS – was unveiled to a selection of VIPs and 

journalists by streetbike freestyle legend 

Chris Pfeiffer, after which it was handed over 

to Rene Gurka, Manager of Berlin Partner 

GmbH to be raffled in the industry quiz ‘Ich 

bin ein Berliner’ as part of the ‘be Berlin’ 

campaign to promote the city. 

“I’m really proud to present the two 

millionth BMW motorcycle here today. I have 

a really busy schedule but this kind of thing 

doesn’t happen every day so I really wanted 

to be here,” said Pfeiffer, who then parked 

up the GS and leapt onto his F 800 R stunt 

bike to perform a special show in front of the 

invited guests and members of the Berlin 

plant workforce.

ceremony, Hendrik von Kuenheim, Head 

of BMW Motorrad, said, “The BMW Group

are ambassadors of the BMW brand – and 

at the same time ambassadors of Berlin – all

‘Berlin’s air in their tyres’ to 130 countries 

and the long-standing relationship between 

Berlin and the BMW Group looks set to 

continue for a long time.” 

With 1900 employees the BMW factory 

in Berlin produces up to 510 motorcycles a 

day from all model series, as well as about 

24,000 brake discs for BMW’s car division. 

The annual motorcycle output in 2010 

amounted to 97,076 machines, whereas in 

the first year of production, in 1969, a total of 

12,000 motorcycles were produced in Berlin. 

“Berlin will remain the heart of BMW’s 

motorcycle manufacture. We are investing 

about 30,000,000 Euros in our factory per 

annum to continue to be competitive and 

in front,” said Hermann Bohrer, Head of the 

BMW factory in Berlin.

Evopos sets the standard 

About 10 years ago we were looking at 

how we could improve things at Evopos 

HQ and someone suggested going for 

the ISO9000 Quality Business standard. 

Well we looked at it and although the 

concept seemed good (to determine 

the best and most efficient way to do 

everything and then document and control 

it in procedures), we were horrified at the 

amount of paperwork and admin work it 

would require. 

Some businesses need this standard 

to be able to supply to large national 

companies, but we simply supply software 

systems to motorcycle dealers and we just 

wanted to be as efficient as we could be. 

So our first reaction was why spend 500 

hours trying to save 50 hours of work? 

We are all about using systems to help 

dealers to be more profitable, and this 

simply did not add up. 

However, we had seen some really 

good stuff in the ISO9000 standards so 

we set up a meeting and asked if we 

could still do it if we automated a lot of 

the work and made it paperless. At first 

the approvers said no – people needed 

access to these massive procedure 

manuals at all times and they have been 



doing it that way for years. But after we 

showed them what is possible by using 

the latest technologies, they relented and 

agreed to let us try. 

The result was amazing, especially 

when we took on new members of 

staff. Everyone could see exactly how 

everything should be done and all 

management had to do was evaluate 

how well people were adhering to the 

documented procedures. Everything 

was documented from how we answer 

the phone to the best ways to deal with 

customers and how we book holidays. 

Staff were happier because they knew 

exactly what they had to do. They could 

also see their ‘Skills Chart’, so they

knew what they needed to learn in order 

to progress in the business. Even the 

approvers were impressed, and we were 

very proud to be their first ever paperless

system, even with the technical resources 

at our disposal. 

This got us thinking that we should 

offer an off-the-shelf ‘Business Control’ 

system designed specifically for 

motorcycle dealers and built to the 

latest ISO9000 standards, which could 

be incorporated into our Evopos Dealer

time and money.

Iridium ain’t always Iridium… 

Aftermarket motorcycle screen and 

bodywork specialist Powerbronze says 

there’s no shortage of misinformation 

concerning so-called ‘Iridium’screens 

and lens shields, with many suppliers 

not even knowing where or how the 

products they’re selling are produced. 

Genuine Iridium utilises Perspex (a 

high-quality acrylic) screens or lens 

shields that have been thermoformed 

into shape then laser trimmed and 

drilled to perfection – and in any 

colour in which Perspex is produced 

(Powerbronze use eight Iridium colours). 

The Iridium fusion technology then 

stretches a special transparent foil over 

the inside surface, which – in dustfree 

laboratory conditions – is then 

slowly vacuum formed and heated by 

a computer-controlled process to ‘fuse’ 

the foil onto the acrylic. 

This gives a rich, reflective finish from 

the front and great clarity when looking

Imitation Iridium finishes are often 

simply ‘spray painted’ on the outside of 

a screen. These generally scratch and 

peel very quickly – even a squashed 

insect can cause problems.

is genuine or not – it should simply look 

reflective from the outside! Turn it over 

and if it has a silver appearance on the 

inside, you can relax in the knowledge 

it’s a genuine Iridium screen. If it’s not 

silver it’s an imitation and will therefore 

need to be handled very carefully.

Steering dampers made simple 

What is a steering damper? It’s a 

compact, fully adjustable, hydraulic 

shock absorbing stabilizer that mounts 

to the steering head right above 

the handlebar mount. By helping to 

stabilize the front end of the a dirt 

bike, the rear of the motorcycle will 

track straighter, allowing the rest of 

the suspension to work the way it was 

designed to. It has also been proven 

to help minimize rider fatigue and the 

dreaded arm-pumping situation that 

occurs while wrestling the front end of 

the bike. Once mounted, it eliminates 

the unwanted phenomenon known as 

‘head shake’ that is commonly found on 

off-road production motorcycles. This 

is more common these days due to the 

steeper head angles found on the latest 

production bikes. A steering damper will 

also help a dirt bike maintain a straight 

course over whoops while smoothing 

out rocky sections by eliminating 

handlebar-wrenching jolts. 

A steering damper basically 

operates under the same principle 

as a front fork. Valving inside the unit 

reacts to the slightest of jolts that are 

transferred through the fork and crowns 

of a motorcycle. Internal circuitry and 

hydraulic valving absorbs the energy 

that would have been transmitted 

through the handlebars. 

The link arm that connects 

the stabilizer to the frame reacts 

instantaneously, absorbing any 

unwanted movement. 

Suspension was designed to 

handle the vertical movement of 

the motorcycle. A steering damper 

completes the suspension package 

by controlling the unwanted horizontal 

movement that is continually transferred 

to the handlebars.
