I think the sky is falling! 

The carbon tax is being rolled out, two 

Australian newspaper stalwarts (Fairfax 

and News Limited) are finally yielding 

to the relentless online revolution 

(announcing their mainstay of delivering 

our news on paper will cease in the nottoo-distant 

future), and – oh my god 

– Annie the musical has closed, never to 

be seen again! 

All gags aside, those of you who use 

BIKEBusiness as a source of information 

or a tool for advertising – or any other 

print media, for that matter – must be in 

some kind of quandary right now as to 

the viability and future of print media. 

Rest assured, research around this 

matter indicates that the future of any 

print media outlet that continues to carry 

valuable news and information will be 

secure, and will efficiently service its 

readerships for years to come. 

And now to the carbon tax… If some of 

the pollies and news outlets are correct 

and prices increase across the board, is 

the motorcycle industry poised to offer a 

carbon-tax-effected community a more 

cost-effective transport option We’ve 

seen it before: when petrol prices rose 

several years ago many people flocked to 

bikes in general and scooters in particular 

to reduce their transport costs, giving the 

bike industry a major surge in sales. 

Maybe the Australian motorcycle 

industry could be in for a boost as the 

reality of the carbon tax unfolds. 

All speculation aside, the 2012

Quad bike safety a growing concern 

There is a growing concern about the 

safety of quad bikes commonly used on 

farms. 

According to a recent University 

of Sydney Australian Centre for 

Agricultural Health and Safety study, 

quad bikes have claimed 23 lives 

and caused 56 injuries in one year in 

Australia. This statistic makes them 

twice as dangerous as tractors. 

With 78 per cent of these accidents 

taking place on farms and 18 per cent 

involving children under 16 years of 

age, the study suggests we have to 

look closely at risk reduction strategies 

around quad bikes. 

All quad bike manufacturers must 

adhere to Australian Design Regulations 

and standards but some believe they 

have implemented better strategies. 

Hi-Sun believes that road testing 

each and every bike before it is packed 

for shipment improves its safety. 

Parklands Power Products, the Hi-Sun 

Australian distributor, also completes its 

own additional testing. 

Parklands CEO Ron Zacka, who 

has been in the industry for more than 

40 years, takes the safety issue very 

seriously. 

“I keep hearing about the roll bar 

or Crush Protection Device (CPD) 

again and again, but unless you have 

seatbelts fitted, they are not going 

to offer any greater protection. And 

of course, quad drivers would then 

actually have to use them, which may 

actually present the bigger challenge,” 

Zacka said. 

Parklands, who sells the majority 

of its quad bikes to the farming sector 

through a nationwide dealer network, 

has frequently witnessed unsafe use of 

these machines. 

“Another big issue is that people 

tend to overload the bikes with fodder, 

equipment and materials, making them 

prone to tip or roll, which is the biggest 

danger of these otherwise reasonably 

safe vehicles. Add to that a little extra 

speed and you take a perfectly safe 

quad bike into a danger zone,” said 

Zacka. 

“More and more farmers have 

switched to Utility Terrain Vehicles 

(UTVs), which are set out more like

a car, have a broader frame, better 

height/width ratio and are hence much 

more stable without compromising on 

capability. 

“These have side-by-side seating, 

allow for a wide range of utility 

attachments and have ample storage for 

fodder, materials, tools and equipment. 

Many of these come with protective 

frames, windshield and roof and are 

overall safer even with engines of up to 

800cc.” 

Despite warning stickers, 

recommendations and stringent testing 

as to the maximum capacity of quad 

bikes, unnecessary risks are created 

by attempting very steep slopes, 

overloading the quad bikes and driving 

them at too high speeds and often 

without protective gear. 

“We actually took our range of quads 

and UTVs through another test recently, 

getting bike and 4WD experts to push 

the quads to their limit at the 4WD track 

at Eastern Creek Speedway and on a 

farm near Sydney,” said Zacka. 

“The idea was to really test the bikes’ 

capacity and despite considerable 

experience among the drivers and no 

excessive loads, we managed to tip a 

few. 

“This just clearly reinforced to us 

all that when there is a speed and 

weight recommendation sticker on a 

machine, the idea is to stay below it, 

not to push well beyond it. Following 

the recommendations would make the 

use of quad bikes a lot safer, safer even 

than roll bars and seatbelts could make 

them.” 

Parklands offers advice and supplies 

and fits roll protection bars to its bikes 

and believes that it is crucial that the 

right bars for the right model are being 

fitted. Some bikes actually don’t have 

the capacity or frame to support these 

devices. 

Makeshift fitting of bars can increase 

the risk for drivers as a roll-over impact 

could damage the bike and render the 

quad bike very dangerous, even with a 

seatbelt. 

The quad-bike safety issue 

seems to have two sides to it: one 

of manufacturers going to greater 

lengths to improve suspension and 

doing stringent capability testing, and 

the second of operators of quad bikes 

riding them with more caution and 

common-sense.

BMW Motorrad: ABS available as standard in 

all models from MY2013 

Increasing importance is attached to the issue of safety 

in public and political debate. As a leading motorcycle 

manufacturer, BMW Motorrad has always been aware of its 

social responsibility in this connection. In 1988 the company 

presented the world’s first serial production motorcycles with 

the antilock brake system (ABS) – the most effective technical 

safety bonus to this day. 

The next logical step follows now: from model year 2013, 

BMW Motorrad will be offering ABS as a standard feature in 

all models. The company is being proactive here, significantly 

pre-empting the requirement for ABS likely to be introduced 

in 2016 for all newly registered motorcycles in Europe. The 

first new models in which this measure is to be applied are the 

parallel-twin-powered BMW F 700 GS and BMW F 800 GS.

Road bikes lead growth in 2012 motorcycle sales 

Motorcycle sales in Australia increased in the first half of 

2012, according to figures releases today by the Federal 

Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). 

In the six months to the end of June, 51,952 motorcycles

departure in early June Derk fabricated 

a chequerplate platform at Zuma’s 

headquarters for his customised 

luggage system, which includes an 

auxiliary 12v battery to power up his 

notebook computer and mobile phone, 

and to provide LED lighting when 

setting up camp. 

Derk estimates he’ll spend around 

six months on the road, his intention 

being to use the roads least travelled, 

and he also hopes to take in Cape York 

in Far North Queensland. 

Derk says he chose the Shineray

were delivered to Australian customers, representing an 

increase of 1,331 units (or 2.6 per cent) over the same period 

in 2011. 

Sales growth was mostly driven by the road bike segment, 

which increased 8.4 per cent (1,567 units) to 20,174 and the 

All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) segment, which increased by 3.4 per 

cent (357 units) to 10,951 compared with the first six months 

of 2011. 

Scooter sales saw a big drop to 5,233 units, being 13.6 per 

cent or 832 less scooters sold year to date compared with 

last year. 

The off-road segment accounted for 15,594 sales (to the 

end of June) for a 30 per cent market share. 

The road bike segment remains the single largest by 

market share, with half-year sales representing 39% of all 

motorcycles sold. 

ATV deliveries represented 21 per cent of the market, while 

scooters’ share decreased to 10 per cent. 

Honda was the number one brand, delivering 11,788 

motorcycles to the end of June. 

Yamaha was in second position to the end of June with 

8,692 sales, followed by Suzuki (6,105), Kawasaki (4,612) 

and Harley-Davidson (3,643).

Pirtek backs Tex and Bundy 

Pirtek Coffs Harbour has partnered with the well-known men’s 

charity campaigner Tex (Terry) O’Grady and his blue heeler 

Bundy. 

Tex and Bundy are famed for travelling around Australia on 

a Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa, raising funds and awareness 

for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and other 

charitable organisations that focus on men’s health issues. 

They are also campaigners for ‘Men’s Sheds’ and motorcycle 

road safety. 

Based in Macksville on the mid-north coast of New South 

Wales, Tex and Bundy raise in excess of $500,000 per year by 

travelling to major public events and hospitals, and they are 

among the star attractions at the Australian MotoGP each year 

at Phillip Island.

Retailer of the Year 2012 – Brisbane’s Bikers World. 

Six-year-old Bundy is a Stumpy Tail Blue Heeler or 

‘Smithfield’, who sits on the fuel tank of the motorcycle in her 

own custom-made jacket and ‘doggles’. It is estimated she 

has travelled over 500,000km in her lifetime. 

Pirtek Coffs Harbour will supply a wide range of hoses, 

fittings, mechanical spares and lubricants to keep Tex and 

Bundy on their crusade across the country. 

“Tex and Bundy are heroes of the New South Wales midnorth 

coast region and it’s fantastic for Pirtek Coffs Harbour 

to get involved with their outstanding work,” said Pirtek Coffs 

Harbour Operations Manager, Greg Marshall. 

“Pirtek is heavily involved with the Prostate Cancer 

Foundation so with Tex and Bundy being champions for 

the cause, it’s a great way that collectively we can continue 

to raise much needed money and awareness to battle the 

disease. 

“On September 14 we will be part of 92 Pirtek sites around 

the country in hosting a barbeque to raise funds for the 

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. We are working on 

having Tex and Bundy along for that event.” 

O’Grady served for 20 years as a Royal Australian Navy 

submariner and is a qualified mechanic. Also on his resume 

is a commercial light pilot’s licence and he is a Justice of the 

Peace (NSW). A keen motorcycle enthusiast, the 55-year-old 

has held various national and local titles in road racing. 

He nowadays specialises in long-distance endurance riding 

and is keen to point out that he still travels the most distance 

of any person on two wheels in Australia. 

Tex and Bundy are 100 per cent self-funded and support 

their crusade by only working part-time or on a contract basis. 

“I really appreciate the support from the group at Pirtek in 

Coffs Harbour,” said O’Grady. 

“Doing so much travelling we really do need to keep 

both the motorcycle and our support van in top shape. 

So we will certainly make use of everything that Pirtek can 

provide us with.”

Newspapers crumble but trade press going strong 

In the light of the recent announcements 

from the Fairfax and Murdoch stables 

of newspapers regarding their ongoing 

difficulties and impending job 

cuts in the face of digital media, some 

industry suppliers are concerned that 

other forms of print media – including 

trade titles like BIKEBusiness and other 

special-interest consumer magazines 

– can no longer effectively communicate 

with their intended target markets. That, 

however, is simply not the case. 

By understanding the difference 

between newspapers and magazines 

the differences in their modes of 

communication can be made clear. 

Until only recently daily newspapers 

were considered to be one of the best 

sources for daily news updates, but 

with increasing numbers of people 

now looking to online media for their 

news, and getting it far faster, the 

effectiveness of the newspaper has 

waned, as has its effectiveness as a 

platform for advertising. 

However, because magazines 

generally carry information of a less 

time-sensitive nature, the immediacy of 

their delivery isn’t such a crucial factor, 

and it certainly doesn’t hamper the 

medium’s efficiency in terms of effective 

communication. 

In actual fact, the effectiveness of 

both trade and consumer magazines 

both as a means of communication 

and as platform for advertising is 

only increasing, as they remain 

to be a favoured form of intrusive 

media. Traditional intrusive media 

like TV and radio are beginning to 

lose their competitive edge simply 

because of their audiences’ ability to 

avoid the advertising these mediums 

deliver. Alternatively, magazines that 

are purchased by choice or are of 

interest because of a trade alliance 

allow advertising to be viewed by 

their readers on every viewing of 

the publication. In effect, magazines 

effectively negate the electronic 

wizardry that otherwise diminishes the 

effectiveness of advertising – ironic, 

when you think about it! 

The bottom line is this: all print 

media is not the same, and while the 

days of the daily newspaper as an 

effective advertising medium dwindle, 

print media via magazines – both trade 

and consumer – is actually offering 

possibly one of the last genuine forms 

of high-quality and effective advertising 

communication.

The Trail Pro 150 is a 150cc, five-speed, three-quarter-sized trail

Honda reveals a new mini bike with massive appeal 

Honda is excited to reveal a brand new 

addition to the CRF family. Meet the new 

CRF110F, a mini bike with massive appeal. 

Designed for the younger generation 

of off-road riders, this new CRF boasts a 

brand new engine with electric start, a new 

chassis plus CRF450R motocross styling 

all rolled into one appealing package that is 

ready to outperform the competition. 

With the aim of replacing Honda’s 

CRF70, the CRF110F’s air-cooled, twovalve, 

SOHC engine now displaces 

109cc, rather than 72cc of its predecessor. 

With power and torque figures rising 

significantly, the result is greatly improved 

performance throughout in the rev-range, 

and much stronger and more consistent 

drive out of corners. 

The automatic twin clutch system 

features two types of independent clutch, 

one for starting and the other for shifting, 

making changing gears easier and 

smoother than a conventional system. 

To make best use of the CRF110F’s 

extra power and torque a new chassis 

was required. The new steel backbone 

frame and swingarm blends a high balance 

of rigidity with a certain amount of tuned 

flex, allowing the rider to fully exploit the 

engine’s capabilities. 

The suspension has been completely 

upgraded, for better traction and stability. 

The telescopic front fork diameter is 31mm, 

4mm larger than the CRF70F, and has 

100mm of travel, while the rear shock 

absorber features a 28mm piston damper, 

up 7mm, with 90mm travel. Drum brakes 

front and rear provide ample and measured 

braking force. 

Echoing the styling of the 2013 

CRF450R, the CRF110F encompasses 

similar ‘triangular proportions’ and has a 

crisp and modern appearance. 

The newly designed graphics employ 

the same Extreme Red and Ross White 

colour scheme as past CRFs but have been 

rearranged to express the fresh character of 

the new addition to the line-up. 

Aimed at riders aged eight to 10, 

Honda’s new CRF110F will ensure ease 

of use thanks to wide-set footpegs that 

increase control and the redesigned 

kick-starter that is easier to use. Seat 

height is only 5mm taller than the CRF70F 

but remains the lowest in class, and the 

wheelbase is only 7mm longer at 1070mm. 

The tyre size remains the same at 14in for 

the front and 12in at the rear. 

This brand new addition to Honda’s 

mini bike range, the CRF110F will provide 

a valuable stepping-stone up to more 

competition-focused CRFs while also being 

ideal for leisure riding. Due for release in 

Australia in late 2012, more information

Extra bite for Pirelli Scorpion 

Italian tyre maker Pirelli has added a 

new Scorpion MX Mid Hard 554 tyre to 

its range, and it says the new off-road 

hoops deliver improved traction and 

power delivery in mid-hard terrain. It’s 

also added a new, lightweight 110/85-19 

size for 250cc four-strokes, for improved 

handling and agility. 

The MX Mid Hard 554 replaces the 

MX Mid Hard 454 as Pirelli’s motocross 

racing tyre for maximum performance on 

mid-hard terrain. 

Pirelli says the Scorpion MX Mid Hard 

554 is a motocross racing tyre with new 

tread patterns for maximum performance 

on mid-hard terrain, with a higher level of 

traction available as the track’s surface 

packs down during a race. The tyre 

performs at its best on intermediate 

surfaces such as grass or dry ground 

and medium-hard compact dirt and 

stones – conditions often experienced at 

everyday off-road tracks. Pirelli says its 

increased performance consistency over 

long races, a new dedicated compound 

with outstanding grip to control sliding, 

and a special linked layout to resist knob 

tearing all represent major improvements 

over the existing Scorpion MX Mid Hard 

454 it replaces. 




The compound of the Mid Hard 554 

uses a new blend of synthetic polymers 

with the latest generation of resins and 

heat stabilisers to guarantee increased 

grip on hard terrain, says Pirelli, 

balanced by consistent performance in 

longer races. This is then combined with 

natural rubber and silica for a very robust 

compound, capable of transferring 

power to the ground without overheating 

or losing knob stiffness at high 

temperatures. Pirelli says the resistance 

and firmness of the compound permits 

extended use on mid-hard terrain, while 

affording consistent wear and minimising 

knob tearing. 

The Mid Hard 554 tyre has a multiply 

carcass for maximum absorption of 

forces during jumps and over bumps, 

and Pirelli says the weight of the tyre has 

been reduced to improve handling and 

agility. 

Along with 110/90-19 and 120/80- 

19 rear sizes, a new and innovative 

110/85-19 size rear MX Mid Hard 554 

tyre has been specifically developed 

for MX2 races and 250cc four-stroke 

engines, where a 10 per cent reduction 

of unsprung mass brings improved 

handling by decreasing inertial forces. 

Pirelli says this new size is in line 

with the latest motocross trends and 

developments, with attention to weight 

reduction as a primary way of improving 

agility and acceleration, allowing superior 

performance for the less-powerful 250cc 

four-stroke models.

Following the successful upgrade of its Universal rear and front 

stand range, Anderson Stands has now redesigned both its 

single-sided swingarm stand models. Anderson Stands says they 

were always the strongest stands of their type on the market, but 

they were time consuming and difficult to make. 

Now, using a new technique of construction dubbed ‘plate 

lattice’, the new stands are stronger and lighter, as well as being 

easier and faster to make – allowing Anderson to maintain the 

same competitive pricing for these models. 

The standard model (the 4S) was redesigned in 2011 and has 

met with enthusiastic customer response. It weighs 2kg less than 

the old model. 

The Spacesaver model (6S) sits on three castors and allows 

the bike to be moved in any direction as before, but the recentlyreleased 

new model addresses a few problems of the old model. 

Now over 2kg lighter it also has a better geometry, allowing the 

lifting effort and the size of the frame to be reduced. The righthand 

castor now has room to be a braked castor, which means it 

stays in the correct position at the beginning of the lift. 

Both these stands will accept lifting shafts to suit all singlesided 

swingarm models, such as those from Honda, Ducati, 

Triumph, MV Agusta, and BMW. There are also right-handed

iBOOST throttle body insert kit 

is an off-the-shelf, easy-to-install 

throttle body enhancement kit 

that gives modern, fuel-injected 

dirt bikes more power and better

According to Triga, the device 

improves the volumetric efficiency 

of the bike’s engine by applied 

PWT (Pressure Wave Tuning). The 

up and down running pressure 

wave in the intake system is tuned 

to ensure the positive peak of the 

pressure wave is there when the 

intake valve opens. 

The flow engineered Triga 

butterfly valve and axle are CNC 

precision machined to eliminate 

high-end flow loss by lowering flow

Know your spark plugs: carbon fouling 

Carbon fouling accounts for around 90 per cent of all spark plug 

troubles. During combustion of the air/fuel mixture, carbon deposits 

can build up on the firing end of the insulator nose. As these 

deposits accumulate, a conductive path is formed from the centre 

electrode, down the insulator nose to where the insulator meets the 

metal shell. This build-up provides a path for the electrical current 

to leak through. When voltage is applied, under certain conditions, 

the carbon path may sink enough current so as to prevent sufficient 

voltage to build up at the gap, and misfire occurs. This leakage path 

is shown in in the accompanying diagram. 

NGK says its spark plug designs incorporate a number of 

features to combat carbon fouling. Some design examples are 

the semi-surface discharge, supplementary gap, longer insulator 

nose, and extended shell. Spark plug anti-fouling design features 

are requested by engine manufacturers during the design 

and development of new engines. With standard vehicles, the 

recommended plug should be used and if fouling is a problem, a 

check on the engine conditions as outlined below should be made: 

• Rich fuel mixture 

• Excessive lubrication oil entering the combustion chamber 

• Clogged air filter 

• Weak/deteriorated ignition components 

• Too cold a spark plug 

• Over-retarded ignition system 

• Prolonged low-speed riding or idling 

The most effective property of a spark plug to prevent fouling is 

its ability to self-clean. Self-cleaning is the term used to describe the 

burning of carbon deposits off the insulator nose when the cylinder 

temperatures rise above approximately should be 450 0 C. Dep 

ending on the vehicle, self-cleaning will only occur at speeds above 

approximately 50km/h. 

During times of prolonged idling and low-speed riding, the 

engine temperature is relatively low and carbon deposits may start 

building up on the insulator nose. On the other hand, highway and 

high-speed riding increase the cylinder temperature enough for the 

carbon deposits to be burnt away and self-cleaning occurs.

Sustainable recruitment practices and how to win and retain 

stars in the “war for talent” 

Recruitment is not an exact science. Often decisions are 

made on candidates that are based more on gut feel than 

objective judgement. Yet this can be one of the most costly 

mistakes you can make. 

So where should you start when reviewing your recruitment 

practices And what do you need to do to give yourself the 

best chance of retaining the best performers 

Business strategy and cultural alignment 

How many people and what sort of skills and behaviours are 

you going to have to bring in your business to achieve your 

strategic plan for your business This is as important as these 

are the people who are responsible for the delivery of this 

strategy. 

It is equally important that you break down the personal 

attributes you will be seeking, such as evidence of leadership 

qualities. Do not forget to include their wider company 

obligations, such as upholding OHS standards, and any 

expectation you have of them that fall outside the standard 

template. If your job descriptions lack role clarity you risk your 

people not being not focused on the higher value activities 

that you require. 

A lot of time can be wasted, or worse, if a dispute arises 

and it can increase frustration levels for all involved. 

Being clear about what you need a staff member to do and 

achieve is paramount in getting business goals achieved, and 

a good position description should help 

you do that. 

• Your method of sourcing these 

people needs to be defined as 

well. For instance, do you need 

to find experienced sales people 

with networks in your industry 

• What have you put in place to 

identify these people and attract 

them to your business 

• Are executive recruiters an 

important part of this or can you find 

them using social-media networking 

sites such as LinkedIn 

• It is well documented how important 

workplace culture is to the 

performance and reputation of a 

business. How much time have you spent really defining 

the qualities that you want your people to have, and why 

Advertising the role 

If you are advertising the role directly it is important to 

take some time to produce something that represents your 

business in the way you would like to be portrayed. Do not fall 

into the trap of just giving a factual summary of the role with 

no explanation of the advantages the role represents. 

Think about all of the positives of the role and select three 

that you think are key draw cards to potential candidates. 

Ensure you get the basics right, and clearly identify the 

location and any important considerations such as travel. 

Research shows that advertising the salary or contract 

rate improves the hit rate of candidates, and I am yet to 

hear a convincing argument for not including it in your 

advertisement. 

Job descriptions 

Once you have identified the key skills and personal 

characteristics required for a role you are ready to develop a 

job description, or review an existing one. 

You must have clear, measurable key performance 

indicators for which are mainly tactical and task-based 

for employees, and key result areas for management roles.

Successfully hiring a strong candidate 

depends, in part, on having positive 

interview experiences with your preferred 

candidates. 

The following steps are key to 

achieving this: 

Plan the process 

If you are sure about what you want you 

are more likely to identify professionals 

who fit the bill. If you are still working 

out politics, funding or personalities, you 

are better off waiting to start the hiring 

process. 

There are also marketing issues involved in making a 

successful hire. If the previous candidate had difficulties, or 

the organisation is in transition, you need to think about how 

you will present this to a prospective candidate. 

The more you have thought about key issues, and the 

more you have addressed glaring weaknesses in reporting 

systems, operating priorities or personal interaction, the better 

your chances of making an outstanding hire. Candidates 

understand there are challenges in every role... they may not 

understand procrastination or avoidance. 

Evaluate all candidates on the same objective criteria: 

When you ask all candidates similar questions you can 

compare their responses more precisely. If all candidates are 

treated with similar respect and are asked to meet similar 

criteria you can trust your result when one emerges as the 

consistent candidate of choice. This approach is helpful then 

you are reviewing two equally qualified candidates. Avoid 

questions that raise issues of marital status, religion, politics, 

gender or sexual orientation. These questions are simply 

illegal. 

They will have reviewed the website, read your literature 

and have a working familiarity with your operations. 

Depending on the nature of the role, use your questions to 

figure out which candidates are responding with standard 

answers and those who are thinking critically about the 

challenges you put to them.

Successful candidates will be prepared without being 

robotic in their responses. 

They will have thought through the issues carefully. They 

will offer thoughts and strategies for improvement without 

being judgmental. They will also reveal themselves because of

Look for a level of honesty, clarity and 

self-motivation in their responses. 

Present your company effectively 

To do this you will need to plan and 

describe your company’s strengths in 

compelling ways. 

• What is your company’s most

• What accomplishments have made 

the company shine recently 

• Has the company been featured in 

the news in a positive way 

• Who can you speak about as 

someone who built a successful 

career with you 

• What distinguishes your company 

from others in it niche/industry 

Offer competitive salary and benefits 

Another area where you can score 

immediate points is by offering a 

competitive salary and benefits. Many top candidates have 

been lost with a low-ball offer. Research the market. Know 

what other organisations are offering for a similar role and 

try to match them. The more willing your organisation is to 

reward employees for their time and loyalty, the bigger the 

pay-off. Outstanding employees want to work for outstanding 

companies. 

Follow up with good candidates who do not get the offer: 

When you have run a disciplined, efficient recruitment process 

you will have identified a number of talented people. Keep in 

touch with all of those whom you identify as competent, with 

the kinds of interpersonal skills that fit your company culture. 

Send them brief updates from time to time. Notify them of 

significant company successes. Keep them in the loop.
