Basic Assumptions Common To All Models: • Counseling/Psychotherapy is a systematic use of human relationships for healing and growth-promoting purposes. • It is necessary for the counselor/psychotherapist to respect the need for a foundation in the basic models of counseling/psychotherapy. • The counselor/psychotherapist maintains an awareness of the individual’s subjective presentation in the here and now in addition to the narrative content. • The maturity of skills, knowledge and attitudes as a counselor/psychotherapist evolves over the counselor’s own professional life and includes commitment to continuing education and personal development. 10
ORIENTATION Part II STUDENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS Orientation is scheduled in late August for students admitted for the preceding summer (May) and fall (late August). Students admitted in May are invited to meet with their advisor upon admission. At orientation, the Psy.D. Handbook is reviewed. Students are also introduced to other program handbooks and publications, on-campus services, as well as meet each and program faculty. There is a discussion of program and professional socialization at the orientation. PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATIONS The department offers students many opportunities to collaborate with each other and with faculty, and to present their works at different professional programs. • Paper Sessions: The department has two paper sessions during the year. Students submit paper proposals. Proposals are reviewed by faculty and selected for presentation at a paper session. • Poster Session: Students present at the department's poster session, and at professional conferences. • Diversity Forum: The department sponsors an annual Diversity Forum that students are invited to attend. • Professional Conferences: Students present their work at state, national, and international conferences. Examples of student presentations during the past year are listed below. National & International Conference Presentations Jesse Matthews received a Student Academic Professional Development Award and was one of four co-authors of a poster presented at the APA Convention in August. Dr. Maria Cuddy Casey was the faculty sponsor. Title: "Internet Frequency Use Among Young Adults: Frequency, Quality, and Impact on Interpersonal Relationships." Katie Peters, Katherine Vojtko, and Kelly Nardella, Psy.D. students, had their poster accepted at the Seventh International Conference on Higher Education and Disability in Innsbruck, Austria, July 20-23, 2010. The poster is titled, "Proactive Empowerment: The Effects of a Multidimensional Support Program for Undergraduate Students with Disabilities." Portions of the trip and presentation are from the College of Graduate Studies Professional Development and Award Fund. Department Paper Session Presentations Kristin Mickel, Kelly Nardella, and Lois Row presented papers at the department's Fifth Annual Paper Symposium on November 2, 2009. Kristin's paper was "Understanding Schizophrenia: An Integrative Perspective." Kelly's paper was: "Cognitive and Affective Features of Bipolar Disorder: 11
