ORIENTATION TO THE PSY.D. PROGRAM HANDBOOK The goal of the Graduate Psychology Department in preparing the Psy.D. Program Handbook is to provide its students with a comprehensive overview of the clinical psychology doctoral program beyond the description of the program that is provided in the College of Graduate Studies Catalog and Student Handbook. Students are referred to the catalog for information related to detailed course descriptions, tuitions, fees, the academic calendar, and policies and procedures regulating the relationship between the College and its student body. The Psy.D. Program Handbook has been divided into 5 parts, plus appendices. * Part I provides an overview of the Psy.D. program, including its history, philosophy, education and training goals, and the clinical competencies and expected outcomes to be attained by its students. * Part II describes the way in which the Psy.D. program offers professional development opportunities for its students outside of the classroom setting. * Part III provides an administrative overview of the Department. Included in this section is information about admission, transcript review and course waivers, course scheduling, advisement, and department meetings. * Part IV highlights Department policies. * Part V reviews the Psy.D. program of study. * The Appendices provide information and forms specific to the Psy.D. program. The Psy.D. Program Handbook supplements the College of Graduate Studies Catalog and Student Handbook and The Graduate Psychology Department’s Practicum, Predoctoral Internship and Dissertation Handbooks. iv
Part I OVERVIEW OF THE PSY.D. PROGRAM PROGRAM HISTORY Immaculata University received approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Higher Education in 1991 to offer the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in Clinical Psychology. Classes have entered annually since 1991. At the time of the original program design in 1989, changes in the Pennsylvania Psychology Licensing Law had already begun a phasing out of master's-level clinicians from psychology licensure opportunities. As such, there was a well-defined need for a doctoral program that addressed the interests of master's level clinicians who would be ineligible for a psychology license beginning in 1995 without a doctorate. Beyond that consideration, there was a calling for a doctoral program that was attentive to the educational objectives of students who aspired toward a doctorate, but whose lifestyles did not permit regular full-time study in a traditional day program. The Psy.D. program at Immaculata University was developed to provide a traditional and rigorous education and training curriculum for students who had a master's degree in either psychology or a related field, but who could not attend classes in the day, and who aspired to present themselves to the public as a Psychologist. The program was successful in fulfilling its initial training mission. As part of its ongoing internal self study process, the department developed a second admission track in 2001 that would allow bachelordegree graduates into the Psy.D. program. The addition of a bachelor’s-level admission track reflected the department’s desire to educate and socialize doctoral students at an earlier point in their professional development. The bachelor’s-level admissions track supplemented the department’s commitment to training master’s prepared clinicians for the Psy.D. degree. Recent program developments further articulate the department's education and training mission, and commitment to its students. In 2007, the department developed a predoctoral internship consortium model (IU-PIC), and is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). In 2010, the department developed a M.A. degree program in Clinical Psychology and was approved to offer the degree following a review by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The M.A. program, discussed later in this Handbook, is embedded in the Psy.D. program and further articulates the department's mission by providing eligible students with an opportunity to earn an M.A. degree prior to applying for predoctoral internship. The department periodically surveys its graduates to identify licensure status and post-graduate professional activities in relation to the education and training objectives of the Psy.D. program in Clinical Psychology. Psy.D. graduates are employed in a range of mental health settings, private business, and private practice as licensed psychologists, as well as full time and adjunct teaching positions at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Program graduates present papers and publish articles. Employment settings, roles, responsibilities and activities of graduates are therefore consistent with the program’s practitioner-scholar focus. PROGRAM ACCREDITATION The Psy.D. program in Clinical Psychology was awarded a seven-year accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA) as of November, 2004. The program was first accredited in 1999. 1
