PEER REVIEWED ARTICLES
In 2000 the personnel of the Physics
Department published 189 articles in
esteemed scientific journals with international
peer reviewing systems. A
complete list of these publications is
given in the Appendix.
There were 56 invited talks, 78
other oral presentations and 65 poster
presentations in international conferences
and 11 invited talks, 40 other
oral presentations and 43 reports in
domestic meetings. Detailed information
about these can be found in the

BOOKS
The researchers of the Department have
contributions in several international
physics books published in 2000. The
International Union of Crystallography
published a book entitled “Defect and
Microstructure Analysis by Diffraction”
which contains a chapter “Effects of
instrument function, crystallite size,
and strain on reflection profiles” written
by two researchers from the X-Ray
Laboratory. A chapter, “Physical
Chemistry of Aerosol Formation”, in the
book “Aerosol Chemical Processes in
the Environment” has been written by a
group of researchers two of whom were
from the Department. In “Adsorption
on Silica Surfaces” the chapter entitled
“Fumed Silica as a Host for Study
of Large Surface-to-Volume Ratio
Problems in finely Divided Aqueous
Systems: Implication for the Atmosphere”
has been written by another
researcher from the Laboratory for
Aerosol and Environmental Physics.
Several textbooks for university
students have been written by the
personnel of the Department, “Statistinen
fysiikka” (Statistical physics,
3rd extended and revised edition, in
Finnish), “Johdatus sähködynamiikkaan
ja suhteellisuusteoriaan” (An
Introduction to Electrodynamics and
Relativity Theory, extended and revised
edition, in Finnish), “Elektroniikan
perusteet” (Basic Electronics, in
Finnish). Basic Electronics has been
so popular that a new edition was published
within a year of its first appearance.
Three books for the three highest
years of secondary school on Mechanics,
Electricity and Magnetism and
Physics as a Natural Science (in Finnish)
have been printed in new editions
and three guides for the teachers appeared,
too. A professor emeritus is
one of the authors of these books. Valo
ja varjo (Light and Shadow), a book
describing science, scientists and the
scientific method, was published in
Finnish. Full details of these books are
given in the Appendix.
Research Collaboration
The Department of Physics has wide
collaboration with many foreign universities
and research centres. During
the 3-year period 1998-00 peer reviewed
articles involved collaboration
with scientists from 189 European
institutes, 63 institutes in North and 4
in Central and South America, 10
