Chen, Naxun lived <strong>to</strong> be 104 years old. His maxim w<strong>as</strong>: “Endure everything patiently with a <strong>to</strong>lerant mood and<br />

open mind/heart; enhanced m<strong>as</strong>sage helps blood circulation; value <strong>the</strong> environment, prevent accidents;<br />

use both brain and body so you can be old without fading!”( 凡 事 忍 耐 ; 心 情 宽 容 ; 加 强 按 摩 ; 血 脉 流<br />

通 ; 重 视 环 境 ; 预 防 意 外 ; 脑 体 并 用 ; 老 而 不 衰 ! )<br />

Yan, Jiyuan lived <strong>to</strong> be 105 years old. His maxim w<strong>as</strong>: “Have a plain and natural, healthy mind; use both your<br />

body and brain, and your mind/heart becomes bright.”( 质 朴 自 然 ; 心 理 健 康 ; 脑 体 并 用 ; 心 地 敞 亮 ).<br />

Lang, Jinshan lived <strong>to</strong> be 104 years old. His position w<strong>as</strong>: “Do not indulge in fant<strong>as</strong>y, do not have a bad temper,<br />

work slowly and orderly, let things take <strong>the</strong>ir course.”( 不 胡 思 乱 想 、 不 发 脾 气 、 做 事 不 急 不 徐 , 顺 其 自<br />

然 ).<br />

Chen Chun lived <strong>to</strong> be 110 years old. His maxim w<strong>as</strong> “Dress in clo<strong>the</strong>s so you still feel some cold; eat meals <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> point of a little hunger; eat a bowl of soup before meals, and half a pound of fruit after meals; keep<br />

your living space neat, suitable and with fresh air flowing throughout; frequently travel and walk f<strong>as</strong>t,<br />

smile and be happy everyday; spirit and soul will receive relief.” ( 穿 衣 三 分 冷 ; 吃 饭 留 点 饥 ; 食 前 汤 小<br />

碗 ; 食 前 汤 小 碗 ; 饭 后 果 半 斤 ; 住 房 宜 整 洁 ; 光 气 常 使 通 ; 常 行 宜 急 走 ; 一 日 三 哈 哈 , 神 灵 得 慰 籍 。)<br />

Tudi Shelayi lived <strong>to</strong> be 133 years old. He thought that “To nurture <strong>the</strong> body needs movement, while <strong>to</strong><br />

nurtured <strong>the</strong> mind needs stillness; combining movement and stillness is <strong>the</strong> foundation of nurturing life.”<br />

( 养 身 在 动 ; 养 心 在 静 ; 动 静 结 合 , 养 生 之 本 ).<br />

Ma Yinchu (scholar): lived <strong>to</strong> be 100 years old. His characteristics were: “Keep your diet light and plain, keep<br />

your mind open and broad, persistent in exercise, specially enjoy a cold bath and swimming.” ( 饮 食 素 淡 、<br />

心 境 开 阔 、 坚 持 锻 炼 、 喜 欢 冷 水 浴 和 游 泳 。)<br />

Lai Yaming lived <strong>to</strong> be 105 years old. His position for longevity w<strong>as</strong> “Abstain from laziness, abstain from bad<br />

habits, abstain from indulging desires, and abstain from worry and anxiety.” ( 戒 懒 惰 、 戒 不 良 嗜 好 、 戒<br />

纵 欲 、 戒 忧 愁 .) .<br />

Chen Lifu, (Kuomintang senior officer), lived <strong>to</strong> be 106 years old. His take on longevity w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> four “old”s for<br />

nurturing life and good health -- old friend, old spouse, old capital (body) and old health.” He advocated<br />

that <strong>the</strong> feet should not be <strong>to</strong>o cold, and <strong>the</strong> head should not be <strong>to</strong>o hot.” ( 四 老 养 生 -- 老 友 、 老 伴 、 老<br />

本 和 老 健 。 主 张 “ 足 不 宜 冷 ; 头 不 宜 热 ”。)<br />

Su Buqing, (a ma<strong>the</strong>matician), lived <strong>to</strong> be 101 years old. His daily habit w<strong>as</strong> “Have a cup of honey water in <strong>the</strong><br />

morning; drink a little liquor <strong>to</strong> sleep soundly; soak your feet in hot water (almost scalding), and invigorate<br />

your body with cold water.” ( 早 起 喝 一 杯 蜂 蜜 水 ; 睡 前 喝 一 点 酒 安 眠 ; 热 水 泡 脚 ; 冷 水 擦 身 ).<br />

Educated in both China and <strong>the</strong> United States, Dr. Kevin Chen h<strong>as</strong> years of experience and<br />

training in blending e<strong>as</strong>tern and western perspectives, and in <strong>the</strong> practice of life-nurturing<br />

methods. As a long-time practitioner of Qigong <strong>Yang</strong> <strong>Sheng</strong>, he is one of <strong>the</strong> few scientists<br />

<strong>to</strong> have both hands-on knowledge of mind-body practice, and an active research career in<br />

mind-body medicine, which is funded through grants by <strong>the</strong> National Institutes of Health<br />

(NIH) and various foundations. Dr. Chen devotes his life and career <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> practice of<br />

<strong>Yang</strong> <strong>Sheng</strong>, and promotion of self-healing and mind-body-spirit integration.<br />
