For the production of stainless
steel industry requires
iron alloys, such as ferrosilicon,
ferrochromium, ferromanganese
and silicide, etc.
These additives are procured
from all over the world. „Primarily
Scandinavia, South
Africa and Kazhachstan pro-
duce the alloys in large
quantities. But also Brazil,
Venezuela, India and Indonesia
are among the suppliers,“

variety of ways of storing
and handling sensitive alloys
and minerals in 19 warehouses
on a basic area of
around 90,000 square metres.
„We have a total of
60,000 square metres of covered
area at our disposal,“
explains Mario Battistiol.
Altogether about 800,000
tonnes of ferroalloys are
handled for the stainless
steel industry, processed according
to customer demands
and delivered to the
plants just-in-time.
On the grounds at the
outer harbour alone dbt has
13 sheds. Some of them are
equipped with sliding roofs
so the bulk goods can be unloaded
from the vessels directly
into the shed without
going the roundabout way
via wheel loader. The entire
quay length at the outer harbour
is around 1.1 kilometres
long and provides space
for up to four motor coasters.
Extensive know-how
Three cranes with capacities
of between ten and 12.5
tonnes ensure rapid cargo
handling from inland waterway
or coastal vessels to the
sheds or directly onto trucks.
At the new dbt branch in
Krefeld cargo is transhipped
directly from ship to truck
and then taken as quickly as
possible to the plants.
The business of handling
weather-sensitive bulk goods
