Wathiq too was instigated by Ibn Abu Dawood <strong>and</strong> his evil<br />

companions to coerce <strong>the</strong> people into accepting <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan as a<br />

creation. Wathiq however did not find it in his interest to imprison<br />

Imam Ahmad. So he ordered Imam Ahmad to leave. Imam Ahmad<br />

thus sought refuge away from public view for five years. Towards <strong>the</strong><br />

end <strong>of</strong> his caliphate, Allah guided Wathiq to retreat from his deviation<br />

due <strong>of</strong> an interesting incident. People were being brought before<br />

Wathiq in shackles <strong>and</strong> were being forced to accept that <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan is<br />

a creation. Anyone who resisted was killed.<br />

A man amongst <strong>the</strong>m greeted Wathiq, "As-Salaam alaikum, O<br />

Ameerul-Mu'mineen,"<br />

to which Wathiq retorted, "Nei<strong>the</strong>r has Allah saved you, nor <strong>the</strong>re<br />

be any salaam (safety) on you."<br />

The man said, "Verily, he who has nurtured you did not do it well."<br />

He was referring to Wathiq's mentor Ibn Abu Dawood who was<br />

also present <strong>the</strong>re. The man recited <strong>the</strong> verse, "When you are<br />

greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it<br />

or (at least) return it equally."<br />

[Soorah an-Nisa (4): 86]<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n said,<br />

"You have not replied me with <strong>the</strong> same or <strong>the</strong> better."<br />

The caliph was astonished <strong>and</strong> ordered Ibn Abu Dawood to debate<br />

with him.<br />

Ibn Abu Dawood asked him, "What do you say about <strong>the</strong><br />

Qur'aan?"<br />

The man said, "You have not done justice to<br />

me, I should initiate."<br />

The caliph agreed <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> man asked,<br />

"What do you say about <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan? O<br />

Ibn Abu Dawood."<br />

He replied, "I say that <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan is<br />
