<strong>The</strong> method of conduct<strong>in</strong>g an ultimate analysis is suffi.<br />
ciently detailed <strong>in</strong> Fresenitis* System, § 171-189, yet the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g summary may be of service <strong>in</strong> call<strong>in</strong>g attention<br />
to the chief po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />
A. Determ<strong>in</strong>ation of C, H, and O, <strong>in</strong> Sugar.<br />
Select a very pure well crystallized sample of sugar, rock-<br />
candy will do, but small crystals from a vacuum pan are<br />
better. Dry at loo*^ C, <strong>in</strong> powder.<br />
Provide thefollow<strong>in</strong>g articles :—<br />
(i) <strong>The</strong> dried substance <strong>in</strong> a tared watch glass.<br />
(2) Combustion tube of hard glass drawn out as shown<br />
<strong>in</strong> Fres. § 174, cleaned and carefully dried.<br />
(3) Liebig potash bulb filled with a KHO solution of<br />
Sp. gr. 1.27, or a U-tube filled with soda-lime.<br />
(4) Chloride of Calcium tube; that of the form described<br />
by Thorpe <strong>in</strong><br />
advantageous.<br />

(5) Small U-tube conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g potash-pumice <strong>in</strong> one limb<br />
and CaCl3 <strong>in</strong> the other.<br />

(8) Good corks, free from holes, rolled and pressed.<br />

(10) A plat<strong>in</strong>um boat to conta<strong>in</strong> the substance, or if<br />
another process be followed, a mix<strong>in</strong>g wire.<br />
(it) Combustion furnace,<br />
(12) If oxygen is to be employed, a cyl<strong>in</strong>der of this gas<br />
and a system of dry<strong>in</strong>g U-tubcs must be provided.
