Corrosion-Resistant Mould Steel for PET Bottle
Production Is Engineered for Machinability
Deutsche Edelstahlwerke GmbH
supplies Corroplast FM specialty
mould steel to manufacturers of
PET bottles and other users of complex
moulds who are seeking greater
moulding efficiency. This steel is
engineered to be highly machinable
without suffering loss of corrosion
resistance. Analysis of the
material has documented a
well-balanced ratio of hardness,
corrosion resistance
and machinability.
These desirable properties
are attributable to the
proportion of the alloy components
chromium, nickel,
manganese and sulphur in
the steel, which took developers
two years to optimize.
A particular development challenge
was to homogenize the material
structure with the correct amount of
sulphur so as to maximize machinability
without impairing performance.
This necessitated careful adjustment
of the melting process and subsequent
secondary metallurgic treat-
ment. Additionally, thermodynamic
calculations were used to minimize
formation of embrittling delta ferrite.
The homogeneity of Corroplast FM
ensures its corrosion resistance even
when heat, condensation and coolant
are prevalent, and provides stability
for filigree components and for any
moulds with minimal cavity spacing.
Corroplast FM mould steel can be
purchased as rolled or forged plate
1,000 mm wide and from 50 to 400
mm thick. The supplier will machine
it in its processing plant if the customer
wishes, delivering it with cooling
bore holes or other features.
