Cutting Tools
Design Features of Versatile Solid-Carbide End
Mills Suit Them for Hard-Milling
Today’s metal-cutting demands have
spurred advances in the materials,
coatings and geometry of end mills
designed for such specialist applications
as hard-material milling. And
these high-end technology improvements
have brought benefits for the
general-purpose tool sector as well.
The versatile MStar series of solidcarbide
end mills, for example, which
Mitsubishi Carbide developed to be
suitable for many different applications,
incorporate advanced features
that the industry’s R&D efforts have
introduced in recent years.
The MStar end-mill series consists
of some 40 types of cutter in
a broad range of diameters. Their
carbide substrate used across the
entire series, provide outstanding
tool life, strongly resist chipping,
and support high-volume production.
The technology used in these
end mills enables them to remain in
the tool magazine and be used for
many consecutive jobs with different
requirements.
The latest additions to the MStar
programme are two antivibration cutters,
MSSHV and MSMHV, which have
short and medium cutting lengths.
These end mills have flutes with a
varied pitch; in addition, their spiral
angles also differ (42° and 45°), further
helping reduce vibration. Capable
of full-width slotting, the cutters
have a larger-than-standard pocket on
the end face to facilitate chip remov-
