High school state golf
The Marquette Mustangs brought home
some hardware from the recent Class 4 state
boys golf tournament, finishing fourth.
“We played really well the first day and
with three out of the five players in their
first state experience, I was hoping we
wouldn’t let nerves get the best of us,”
Marquette coach Eric Schweain said. “We
played just well enough to take a state
trophy.”
Rock Bridge won with a 589 to easily best
Rockhurst’s 607. Springfield Glendale was
third at 611 followed by Marquette at 615.
are returning five quality players but we
have some really talented players that are
waiting for their chance to prove what they
can do next year as well,” Schweain said.
“They will have to work to improve their
it bodes well for our future in the
Priory junior Thomas Weaver finished in
a tie for eighth at 152 in the Class 3 state
boys golf tournament. Weaver shot rounds
of 74 and 78 in his second trip to the state
tournament and his best finish.
Rebels coach Rick Suarez believed
Weaver would have a good tournament.
“We thought Tom could compete for
the championship. He played very well,”
Suarez said. “In fact, he hit the ball better
than his score indicates. He had some problems
with the putter.”
Suarez said Weaver has the ability to be
an even better player in the future and to
play in college.
“I’m delighted to have Tom back,”
Weaver said. “I expect him to be a team
leader next year, on and off the course.”
Michael Murphy scored the other Lafayette
goal.
“This was a very good season for our
program,” MICDS coach Don Casey
said. “We have played in the Final Four
33 times in the 45 years that MICDS has
had a water polo program. Having said
that, this is still a great accomplishment
for this team.”
Lafayette coach James Waeckerle was
pleased with his team’s play.
“I am extremely proud of the team for
reaching the Final Four,” Waeckerle said.
“It is only the second time in school history
that we have reached that far. We finished
third in 2005, so this was our second-best
finish in the state tournament. However,
our 25 wins is the most we have ever had
in a season.”
Amateur golf
Kyle Weldon, a senior
at Kansas State and a
Parkway South graduate,
advanced from the Local
Qualifying tournament
for the U.S. Open.
Weldon, a Des Peres Weldon
native, fired an even par
round of 71 at Norwood
Hills Country Club.
Chris Naegel, a Marquette graduate, and
Mike Suhre also shared medalist honors,
each shooting a 1-under par 70 to advance
to the sectional round of the U.S. Open
Qualifying.
Falling just short of qualifying were
CBC graduate John Kelley and Skip Berkmeyer,
of Town & Country. They competed
in a 4-for-1 playoff after shooting a
72. The final qualifying spot was earned by
Matt Echelmeier.
Weldon red-shirted this spring at Kansas
State, thus this was his first competition of
the summer and he noted it was a tough
test.
“The rough was thick, the greens were
quick, and the pin placements were very
good,” Weldon said. “Plus the weather was
tough. It rained all morning and then the
wind blew all afternoon.”
That said, Weldon was happy to advance
and looks forward to playing Monday, June
8, at Memphis in the sectional qualifier.
