Eureka Wine House offers wine, craft brews and relaxed noshing

Ernest Hemingway wrote, “My only regret in life is that
I did not drink more wine.”
It’s a regret Lynn LaVelle, owner of the Eureka Wine
House, and her customers will never have.
“I love that quote. That’s why it was on our menu,”
said LaVelle, who feels there’s nothing better than relaxing
with a glass of wine and friends on the porch of her
Eureka Wine House, one of the oldest buildings in historic
downtown Eureka. “The house was built in 1870, which
we expanded since we’ve had the business. We built the
pavilion, expanded the patio and added the kitchen.”
The wraparound porch, patio and covered pavilion
combine to create an inviting, cozy space that overlooks
Eureka’s historic main drag, South Central Avenue, and
encourages customers to linger over their drinks and
enjoy the view. It’s a relaxed approach to entertaining that
defines the Wine House’s experience and complements its
eclectic menu and a wine list that features domestic and
international varieties.
“We have wines that other places don’t have, many that
are considered boutique wines. However, we have a lot

more than just wine,” LaVelle said. “For the
longest time people didn’t realize that we
serve craft beers and have a full bar. And our
menu is also different – it’s what we call nosh
cuisine, food that goes well with wine, craft
beers and cocktails. Things that are good for
a single-serve plate or for sharing.”
Charcuterie and Bruschetta Boards are
two of the creative, artfully plated shareable
noshes that appear on the Wine House’s new
warm weather menu. Both boards are specialties
of the restaurant’s “petite kitchen” – a
phrase LaVelle coined to describe the small
space that delivers an impressive assortment
of big flavors.
Counted among those flavorful plates is a
threesome of unconventional flatbreads: the
Cubano topped with the classic elements of
the Cuban sammie; the Loubano that layers
an eclectic mix of slow roasted pulled pork,
provolone, mozzarella, Maul’s BBQ sauce
and banana peppers; and the Hot Salami.
Other offerings on the petite kitchen’s
concise summer menu are two Panini picks – a Turkey
Artichoke and the Ham and Cheese – each served with
hummus and crudités. Those wanting to eat green can
choose a Greek Salad or a Nicoise Tuna Salad that is
served on a bread of greens or heaped on a hoagie roll.
“We strive to offer something different,” LaVelle said.
She encourages customers to look for the Wine House’s
tasting and pairing events.

On the porch, patio or in the pavilion, the Eureka Wine House offers the
right mix of food, wine and good times.
“It’s a great way to learn how food affects the taste of
your wine. We always try to share (wine) knowledge if
we can but we’re not stuffy” she said, adding, “drink what
you like.”
Along with the new seasonal menu is a summer lineup
for live music scheduled for Fridays and Sundays.
