Governance Changes
The statute has established the
formation of several new governing and
advisory bodies:
• Rutgers–Camden Board of
Directors
• Rowan University/Rutgers–Camden
Board of Governors
• Rutgers–New Brunswick Advisory
Board
• Rutgers–Newark Advisory Board
Furthermore, it added a chancellor for
Rutgers–New Brunswick and expanded
the Rutgers Board of Governors from
11 to 15 members, with eight appointed
by the New Jersey governor
and seven selected by the Rutgers
Board of Trustees.
Faculty’s Role
Faculty play a major role in guiding
university policy and procedures
through shared governance with the
boards and senior administration.
The Rutgers University Senate is a
universitywide representative body
with several additional faculty councils.

University schedules all board meetings
and is the liaison between the boards
and the university community.

Governing Boards
of the University
Board of Governors
The Rutgers University Board of Governors
is vested generally with the
government, control, conduct, management,
and administration of the
university. There are 15 voting members.
The president of the university
is a nonvoting ex officio member
who implements board policies with
the help and advice of senior administrators
and other members of the
university community.

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees acts in an advisory
capacity and has certain fiduciary
responsibilities over assets of
the university in existence before
1956. The board comprises 59 voting
members and four nonvoting
members, one of which is the president
of the university.

Additional Boards
Camden Board of Directors
The new Camden Board of Directors
provides general supervision of the
campus, subject to the authority
of the Rutgers University Board of
Governors.
Foundation Board of Overseers
A Board of Overseers governs the
Rutgers University Foundation, which
has raised more than $1 billion over
the last three decades to support the
university’s mission.
New Jersey Agricultural Experiment
Station Board of Managers
The Board of Managers serves as a
two-way communications link between
the Rutgers’ New Jersey Agricultural
Experiment Station and the
County Boards of Agriculture. The
board also advocates for the experiment
station and provides advice to
the executive dean and director of
the experiment station on affairs
concerning the experiment station’s
programs.
Rowan University/Rutgers–
Camden Board of Governors
The new Rowan University/Rutgers–
Camden Board of Governors provides
joint oversight for any new
health sciences programs to be created
by either institution or by the
two institutions collaboratively.

Advisory Board
The New Brunswick Advisory Board
works with the New Brunswick
chancellor in implementing the
teaching, research, and service
mission of the campus; engaging the
campus with its local community, its
region, and the state; and supporting
its commitment to academic
excellence, access, and diversity.
Rutgers–Newark Campus
Advisory Board
The new Rutgers–Newark Advisory
Board works with the Rutgers–
Newark chancellor in implementing
the teaching, research, and service
missions of the campus; engaging
the campus with its local community,
its region, and the state; and
supporting its commitment to
academic excellence, access,
and diversity.
