Our History
1766: Chartered in 1766 as the all-male
Queen’s College in New Brunswick.
1825: Renamed Rutgers
College, honoring trustee
and Revolutionary War
veteran Colonel Henry
Rutgers.
1864: Prevailed over Princeton
to become New Jersey’s landgrant
institution. From an early
emphasis on agriculture and
the mechanical arts, today the
nation’s 74 land-grant institutions
have expanded their
mission to include a broad
range of teaching, research,
and service activities.
