Inventions Lead <strong>to</strong> Honors: The 2012<br />
New Jersey Inven<strong>to</strong>rs Hall of Fame honored<br />
neuroscientist Paula Tallal as Inven<strong>to</strong>r<br />
of the Year. Her research has led<br />
<strong>to</strong> a growing global business that develops<br />
software <strong>to</strong> help children <strong>and</strong><br />
adults with learning disabilities. Biochemist<br />
Sergei Kotenko won the N.J. Inven<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
Hall of Fame Patent of the Year<br />
Award for his discovery of powerful antivirals<br />
called interferon lambdas.<br />
Genetic Answers: For less than $200,<br />
a new genetic carrier DNA sequencing<br />
test at the Institute of Genomic Medicine<br />
at New Jersey Medical School can<br />
screen for cancer <strong>and</strong> hereditary disorders<br />
such as cystic fibrosis.<br />
Bugs vs. Bugs: Daniel Kadouri of the<br />
<strong>Rutgers</strong> School of Dental Medicine is<br />
using preda<strong>to</strong>ry bacteria in the battle<br />
against drug-resistant infections. Two in<br />
particular–Bdellovibbrio <strong>and</strong> Micavibrio<br />
–are the fastest moving organisms in<br />
all of nature. The U.S. Department of<br />
Defense has invested more than $1.5<br />
million in his work <strong>to</strong> help save soldiers<br />
coming back from war zones with<br />
deadly, antibiotic-resistant infections.<br />

The Office of the Vice President for<br />

Research Grants <strong>and</strong><br />
Contracts<br />
Research proposals, grants, <strong>and</strong> contracts<br />
<strong>and</strong> the relevant support important<br />
<strong>to</strong> faculty <strong>and</strong> staff is provided<br />
“pre-award” by the Office of Research<br />
<strong>and</strong> Sponsored Programs <strong>and</strong> “postaward”<br />
by the Division of Grant <strong>and</strong><br />
Contract Accounting. These offices assist<br />
faculty members in their efforts <strong>to</strong><br />
obtain <strong>and</strong> administer externally sponsored<br />
programs in accordance with the<br />
rules <strong>and</strong> regulations governing the<br />
programs. Their procedural efforts are<br />
intended <strong>to</strong> ensure that the university<br />
remains in good programmatic <strong>and</strong> financial<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ing with sponsors thereby<br />
encouraging a steady source of funding<br />
for the university <strong>and</strong> its faculty.<br />

Programs<br />
This office assists faculty in preparing<br />
budgets, obtaining institutional approvals<br />
(including human <strong>and</strong> animal<br />
research approvals), <strong>and</strong> submitting<br />
completed applications. It also provides<br />
advice <strong>and</strong> assistance with sponsored<br />
program management <strong>and</strong> compliance<br />
