Inventions Lead to Honors: The 2012
New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame honored
neuroscientist Paula Tallal as Inventor
of the Year. Her research has led
to a growing global business that develops
software to help children and
adults with learning disabilities. Biochemist
Sergei Kotenko won the N.J. Inventors
Hall of Fame Patent of the Year
Award for his discovery of powerful antivirals
called interferon lambdas.
Genetic Answers: For less than $200,
a new genetic carrier DNA sequencing
test at the Institute of Genomic Medicine
at New Jersey Medical School can
screen for cancer and hereditary disorders
such as cystic fibrosis.
Bugs vs. Bugs: Daniel Kadouri of the
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine is
using predatory bacteria in the battle
against drug-resistant infections. Two in
particular–Bdellovibbrio and Micavibrio
–are the fastest moving organisms in
all of nature. The U.S. Department of
Defense has invested more than $1.5
million in his work to help save soldiers
coming back from war zones with
deadly, antibiotic-resistant infections.

Research Grants and
Contracts
Research proposals, grants, and contracts
and the relevant support important
to faculty and staff is provided
“pre-award” by the Office of Research
and Sponsored Programs and “postaward”
by the Division of Grant and
Contract Accounting. These offices assist
faculty members in their efforts to
obtain and administer externally sponsored
programs in accordance with the
rules and regulations governing the
programs. Their procedural efforts are
intended to ensure that the university
remains in good programmatic and financial
standing with sponsors thereby
encouraging a steady source of funding
for the university and its faculty.
Office of Research and Sponsored
Programs
This office assists faculty in preparing
budgets, obtaining institutional approvals
(including human and animal
research approvals), and submitting
completed applications. It also provides
advice and assistance with sponsored
program management and compliance
issues.
